Making aprons

Four days since my last post! Where do the days go!!

I've simply got to get busy and finish up some aprons, and stop trying to make the perfect cross-back apron. Here's one...

and another...
this is my try at sewing an apron with a ruffle all the way around.

not exactly what I had in mind, and a far cry from the pretty blue checked below. Need to use a different pattern to get the look of this apron I saw on Pinterest. I love this one!

borrowed from Pinterest

The two muslin aprons I made a week or so ago wear pretty good. I've been trying them out, along with a new pair of pantaloons...

Pantaloons used to sell pretty good at the farmer's market, along with the bonnets and aprons. I have to tell you, I felt like "Little Bo Peep" out walking Eli on Saturday, and he made a good looking sheep. :)

He's tired and sleeping good here.

It's bedtime, so I won't get any sewing done tonight. If it wasn't so late, I would delete this boring post and start over. :(

Love,
Henny

  1. All of your aprons are so pretty.
I like the one you show on Pinterest too, lots of room :)
Your cross-over one is lovely as is the ruffled one.
    Eli....you are such a good boy :)

  4. There you go, making me want a new apron. Now, a ruffle all around would be nice... :~)

  5. At least you are getting some sewing done, which is more than I can say for myself. Looks like the pinterest apron had quite a bit more fabric in the ruffle. Ruffles can use up a LOT of fabric! Jake has a chair too, and sleeps like that.

  6. I fell down the yarn painting rabbit hole. I may stay there for some time. I do like your apron experiments, it is fun trying new things but very time consuming.

  7. I have had aprons on the brain lately. Love that cross over style. They are so comfy. I may be sewing some for myself soon.

  8. I always miss seeing my dog all sleepy. She was really alert even in sleep mode, if she heard a person her eyes would always open.

  9. I smiled at the thought of you looking like Little Bo Peep. : )
Like the style apron. I love looking at aprons but I never wear one.

  10. I love to see what you are doing with the aprons, the frill all the way around is stunning. Eli is always a joy to see.

  11. Your aprons are just darling, my friend! And the frill is the perfect touch :)

It was a sweet blessing to pop in for a visit. I hope you are well and enjoying your summer. Hugs!

  12. I know you WANT the total-fold-over-back look of that Pinterest one. Hope you get the look you want. But not every one needs that.

The ones you have made, are precious.

Oh no, don't delete a post! There are too few summertime posts, as is. Glad you didn't delete this one. :-)

  13. i am so glad that you didn't delete this post, it was lovely. I would like to see more photos of your muslin aprons and am looking forward to seeing the pantaloons. I love that simple clean look. Eli as always . . . steals the show, he is just gorgeous!

  14. I agree, that checked apron is really pretty. It looks very early 20th century. I like yours though----it looks quite perky and the material with the checks and hearts is so cute. One difference could be that the material in the blue apron looks much softer than yours. Because of that the ruffle hangs down in soft folds. Maybe if you washed the sizing out of the ruffle material before sewing it might soften it up a bit.

    1. I had an email from a reader and she said a ruffle like the one on the blue checked apron is cut on the bias. That's makes the ruffle lay flat. I appreciate all the advice and ideas. When I finally get too old to sew, I will know how. :) Thank you Vic. I always appreciate your thoughts.

    2. Oh yes, that sounds exactly right. Cutting on the bias would give it that nice drapey shape. I haven't done much sewing other than curtains and pillows since my son got too old for home sewn clothing and for myself I outgrew the patterns that I had and I couldn't figure out which size to change to. I admire your taking patterns and adapting them. I personally hate experimenting with almost anything since if it doesn't work out I sit there looking at all that time and effort going for naught. I just want some directions to go by and hope for the best.

  15. Your posts are NEVER boring! Do you wear long skirts so you can wear pantaloons, or what? I love that Eli. He is so soft and fluffy. And so BIG!

    1. Thank you Shirley. I do like wearing long skirts and I like to wear the wide leg pantaloons with a long top and an apron. Working around here though I am mostly in ragged jeans and boots. I don't know how women back in the 1800's worked outside in the heat wearing a long dress and bonnet and an apron.

  17. I like seeing what you're sewing, maybe because I cannot sew! I wish I could but I never could learn.
I've always had aprons and worn them but now I'm making an effort to use one whenever I'm baking. I have some pretty ones I've picked up at thrift stores so I want to actually use them not keep them in a drawer tucked away.

  18. I'm not much into skirts and aprons and all, but they sure do suit you. I always enjoy seeing your creations.

  19. I love all of my aprons from you. I have been wearing the two crossovers or coveralls that you shared with me just about every day. I have one that I keep for canning the other for housework and cooking. :) You are a beautiful seamstress, Henny!

  20. I love your aprons, Henny! The blue checked is my favorite. Adorable. I sent you an email.

  21. Henny, you need to develop this philosophy when writing your blog posts and feeling like they're boring "Never Complain, Never Explain!" Honestly, I was really enjoying the post and found it very interesting and chuckled at Eli sleeping, then read that you felt it was boring and you would start over if you had more time.... well, it seems you are the only one who thought that so if you hadn't brought it up we would have given it an A! Next time you're tempted to put your post down, remember these words: Never Complain, Never Explain.

  22. I have missed you! Eli looks so comfy! I adore your aprons. I have such fond memories of grandmother teaching me to sew when I was young. God bless your day.
