Another word or two

Sure appreciate your ideas on heating a small greenhouse. There were some good ones. Someone mentioned an oil lamp. I'm wondering if one would put out more heat than a candle??

Early yesterday I did light one of the big emergency candles, put it on a little table...
and left it burning all day. At the edge of dark, I started to worry so I ran up to the greenhouse and blew the candle out.

The greenhouse door opens easily...I had visions of something pushing the little door open and knocking the candle over.

Oh, about that strange plant...
A couple of you thought millet, and I think you're right...white millet. Looked it up and it looks just like white millet.

The seed stalk did remind me of bird seed and made me think it might be red milo, that heavy seed that seems to make up about 50% of the seed found in bags of economy bird seed.

I buy the economy mix at Walmart. Our side yard stays covered in the red milo. We buy it to throw out for the guineas, ducks, and the few birds that will eat it.

It's about time to fill the feeders with sunflower seeds and something the songbirds will eat. Shelby was just telling me that she had scrubbed her bird feeders using an old toothbrush, and had put them in the sun to dry. I need to do that.

Oh good grief, talking about seeds reminds me, early yesterday morning, getting the feed together for the animals...
I just stood there in unbelief. How did I manage to drop the bucket! Reckon my crocs will ever wear the same?

Better get busy. The days seem even shorter now, darn it! Anyhow, I leave you with this creepy spider...

Poppy took these a few weeks ago and I had forgotten about them.

Oh, I had a funny little  story to tell you of Poppy's hunting time. I'll save it for the next post.

Thank you. Hope to be back real soon.

Love,
henny

A day in the yard

Dear friends,

I fully expected to pull up my blog and find that all of you had left me. Sure hope you're still there.

I've been in the playhouse today...why, I've been all over the place today!

We've had a couple of cooler days and of course, I went crazy...cleaning the garden, moving plants around, raking leaves, cleaning out the teeny tiny greenhouse, stacking pots...
Why stacking pots took a while and I'm still not happy with the look. Sometimes I think being a Virgo will drive me crazy! :)

and leaf raking! It's way too early for that! But did you see all the leaves inside the playhouse? Our entire yard looks that way. It's this dry weather! We need rain!

Mama used to say, "oh it will rain again. It always does". Well I sure hope mama was right. It is dry as a bone here.

The guineas kept me company inside the garden today. In fact, they got a dust bath just inside the garden gate.

Oh, that one strange looking plant left in the garden is "Horseradish". It has been growing all summer so now I need to read how to harvest the root, and then grow another. Whew!

Here's another thing! There's always something needing to be rescued...
I went to get a bucket of compost from the bin, which is dry as a bone too, and pulled up this tall skinny pitiful looking weed. But wait, that outer shell looks like an English walnut! and look at the long root, reaching from under my thumb all the way to the fig leaf...

This was the top of the plant. Did I mention pitiful? Oh, this little nut tree just has to live. I will keep you posted.

Look what I found while cleaning up the garden....
Remember the beautiful Leek that grew and grew then burst into a ball of tiny flowers? Her remains. :( Hopefully one of these tiny seeds will product another beautiful lady.

One more thing to show you...
Poppy was deer hunting and found this unusual mushroom in the woods.

and this is how it looked the next day...
sorry for the poor quality. The picture was taken with Poppy's little flip phone.

Okay, this is it. Thank you for stopping by. My plan is to do better at posting and visiting, and I mean it!

Thank you, new followers. I do love my blogging friends.

Love,
Henny

Update

Yep, we've spent a lot of time watching spring through the living room and kitchen windows lately...

Just a little update from Henny Penny Lane. My blood work tested negative for Lyme's disease...that's a good thing, and tomorrow, finally I see the orthopedic specialist. Still, my biggest concern is not being able to stand straight and walk at the same time.

My one constant companion through all this has been Dumperoo. This kitty cat refuses to leave my side, and has slept on the couch with me every single night.

I sat on the back steps this morning, worrying about all the grass and weeds that have come up in the little brick path. Good gosh! Work is piling up!

Then from the front porch this morning I took this picture of the chocolate vine. It is covered in tiny blooms and smells absolutely delicious. Look close to see the tiny white blooms.

The chocolate vine in the front yard has tiny purple blooms.

Not being able to work outside lately is driving me crazy...so yesterday I pulled a chair up to the table on the back porch, in the sun, and sowed a few seeds in these little starter pots.

Remember when that sweet lady at texan.blogspot.com was giving away the big bag of vegetable seeds...and I was the winner? Well there were all kinds of tomato seeds...the old varieties like Mortgage Lifter, and and I can't recall all the names...but I sure enjoyed sitting there in the sun with everything I needed close by. Poppy said he will move these trays to the teeny tiny greenhouse for me.

Sure hope these tiny seeds sprout. Maybe by the time these are large enough to plant in the garden, my back will be well. Oh, I hope so!

I hope it's warm and sunny and springtime where you are. Thank you for visiting and I hope to be back here soon.

Love,
Henny

"I've got mail"!

Actually my package arrived late Tuesday from Texan over at texan.blogspot.com.

This lady is a fantastic gardener. I think she must grow some of everything!! Her gardens are amazing!! So, having way too many seeds, she had a give-away and my name was in the pot.

She and her husband have a Great White Pyrenees named Keeper. It was Keeper who drew my name. How special is that? Thank you Keeper!

Would you just look at the seeds! Here...

and here! Why, I've never owned such an assortment of seeds in my entire life!

I am so excited. It's going to be a long wait until next spring! The seeds are in such pretty packs. I love them! Thank you so much Texan!

And speaking of plants, the Camellias are in full bloom. I love the colors.

Could that be a yellow jacket?

Simply must get busy now. Hopefully, I can finish painting the back side of the shop. This job is beginning to get old!

Hope to be back soon!

Love,
Henny
