If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

This most beautiful Stargazer Lily came up through ivy and weeds in the back yard two years ago and bloomed like crazy on a tall healthy stem. I fell in love with it!

So, last year I moved this lovely Stargazer Lily to a flower bed along side the path that leads to the shed, then went out and bought more lily bulbs and added them. I then decided to move the little peach tree...

this one, that had outgrown it's pot, and plant it in the same flower bed. The little peach tree, happy to be free from the pot, grew like crazy, shading out the lily bulbs. So there were absolutely no pretty Stargazer Lily blooms last year. None!!

Early this spring, I hurriedly dug out the lily bulbs from under the spreading branches of the pretty peach tree and put the poor stressed bulbs, plus another handful in a new bed in the front yard around the bird bath, all the while picturing the beauty to be...

and here's what we've got. Have you ever seen such a tall spindly flower. I thought it never would stop growing, and bloom.

Looks like there will be only one lily bloom this summer, but if the good Lord lets me live another year, and if I don't go digging and moving things again, maybe there will be a bed of Stargazer Lily blooms. There are fifteen bulbs here. The little group in front, to the right of Weetie's head will be a surprise as I bought them for $1.50 at Lowes on Mother's Day, after the blooms had fallen off.

Maybe it's time for a Dumperoo picture...

Dumper likes nothing better than to curl up in somebody's lap...he watches for the first opportunity.

These days lately have been hot and humid, too miserable to work outside after lunch time, so there is no excuse for not getting more sewing done.

Hope to be back soon.

Love,
Henny

  1. Funny,.... and frustrating..... how things work out! Hopefully those lilies are just getting established and are storing up energy to shock you next year ;-)

  2. If it's too hot/humid outside, isn't it the same, inside?

    unless you have A/C.

    1. Oh Luna, I don't think that we could survive without air conditioning. Seriously! We are spoiled. :)

I love the look of Stargazer lilies, but can't stand the smell.
Sweet Smokey, he's a friendly boy. Our cats are not happy when the temps rise to the nineties.

  4. Hi Friend,
Yep, Wisconsin has the heat and humidity now too. Staying in for a few days as well. ;-) All our plants are smiling, this is our first heat wave of the year.

  5. Your little stargazer looks like he's growing to the stars. I am always moving things around in the yard. Sometimes it takes a while to find the place where they will grow best.
    Happy gardening . . . Oh.it's 103 here today.

  7. Well, we will all be waiting for next year and more blooms. That is, unless you get into your moving phase again!

  9. I love the blooms of a stargazer lily, but they do have a strong scent. I have a white one, well actually three plants because it put out two new stems this spring, and they have grown taller than me. Each plant has from three to five buds. They're heavy, and with the rain and wind we've had, I tied them to the branches of the tree they're under. You do what you have to do...:)
I'm anxious to see the apron with the ruffle.

  10. I believe those surprise lilies are Asiatic Lilies. I have some in my yard and they are always so pretty! I think I posted about them, awhile back, on Red Brick On The Right. I also have the Stargazer Lilies and I think they are my favorite flowers. Mine are a bit spindly, this year, as well.

  11. I love Stargazer lilies! Yours is spectacular. This fall I want to plant some more lilies in one of the perennial beds.

Glad your peach tree enjoyed its freedom from the pot! You have such a beautiful place, Henny...and it is because you work so hard at it...and Poppy too.

  13. I think Stargazer Lilies are some of the most beautiful. I don't know if mine are gone but I still have hope. Some of my lilies haven't bloomed as yet but each year I seem to have less coming up. Wish I knew why!!I was not careful when I planted them originally and I have tall ones in front of shorter ones. Silly me.

  14. Sorry about your lilies but when they all bloom next year it will be beautiful! It is so hot and humid here too that I don't like to take care of my garden! I move things around too much also and need to stop doing that as it is too much work! Nancy

  15. Probably those lilies will bloom next year. Often if you don't get what they call "top size bulbs" they just aren't big enough to produce a flower. A year or maybe two of the leaves feeding the bulb may be needed to get some flowers going for you. Some bone meal will give them a big boost too.

Gardening is a great teacher of patience. There's always next year when everything is going to be gorgeous!

  17. stargazers are such tropical and pretty flowers!! So glad you got one......and maybe just maybe next year you will have many more! Mercy it's HOT HERE TOO......too hot to go outside during the day

  18. Well, it's nap season then. It's hot and I'm sure Dumperoo would love to join you for an afternoon nap. Your lily is lovely. We dug ours up because they were too huge and we'd had them for ages. One survived anyway so I moved her near the Shasta daisy. They are doing well together, friends and all that.

  19. I loved Vic's comment above..." There's always next year when everything is going to be gorgeous." I, too, am already planning for next year when.... The tall lily is a beauty, isn't she...

  20. I have sure made some mistakes in my planting...so know what you are feeling. Not to mention having neighbor kids that came and tore off all the blooms on a couple lilies that were blooming so beautiful for the first time.

  21. Henny, at least you keep your plants alive. I think I have a black thumb when it comes to plants! Dumperoo is quite the kitty. Tabbie likes to lie in bed with me during the night and put her tail in my face. She gets a little miffed when I let her know that end of hers is not the end I want in my face! Have a great day.

  22. I predict your lilies will be glorious next year! The lone lily this year reminds me of a tall, skinny teenage boy.

  23. I have some of them also. I don't move them though... no room :-) but yours are just lovely.

  24. Such lovely photos and thoughts indeed. Warm greetings!

  25. I love stargazer lillies. I think I have one but i am not sure. I took a chance an transplanted some foxglove plants. I had set them out in the ground and some wild yellow flowers took them over and shaded them out. So I move 2 plants into pots I hope I can get one of them to bloom before summer is over so I can get some. I also planted holly hocks plants but no flowers on them either. I am not having much luck. So much rain and a lot of heat.

    Love you bunches.
