The Little Brown Dress

Remember around the middle of August when my cousin Pat came for a visit? We had fun as we checked out all the thrift stores in town. We were busy looking in one particular thrift store when a lady whispered...don't buy any clothes today. Tomorrow the store is having a bag sale, all the clothes you can pack into a plastic grocery bag for five dollars! Well, while rummaging through the ladies dresses I found an adorable little brown linen dress. Granted, the dress looks a little young for me but I pictured wearing it over a thin tee shirt and with my ruffled pantaloons. A sweet old fashioned outfit. Pat said, hang the dress where you will remember. Tomorrow we will be here when the doors open for business and you can get the dress then. Well I worried and worried about that little brown dress knowing that with my luck it would be gone.

The next morning we were late getting out the door for our day of shopping. Darn it, I said. I'll bet that little brown dress is gone. Pat said, believe me, nobody wants that little brown dress. We both laughed. Sorry, but I felt like everybody would want it! Anyway I found the dress and stuffed it in my bag.

A few days after Pat had gone home and Poppy was at work, I decided to spend some time trying on outfits. I slipped on my pantaloons and tee shirt and reached in the closet for the little brown dress. Suddenly, looking at the tag, the side zipper, the feel of the fabric, the color, the tightness through the bust as I tried pulling the dress over my head...something felt really familiar. Then it hit me. This is the same little brown dress that I found in a Goodwill store in Wake Forest months and months ago! I just had to have it then too. I paid $4.39 for it. It was too tight across the bust so I folded it and put it away in a box of stuff to be donated, which I did. What an idiot! I've bought the same dress twice! Maybe I should burn it this time.

Better get busy. Bun Bun is waiting for some grass and a ride down to the dog lot...

I raked a couple of wheelbarrow loads of pine straw today to cover the path to the chicken lot. All the rain lately has left things looking a bit messy. Won't be long until time to rake leaves again! Yay!

Thank you if you have managed to read this far. :) Hope to be back soon.

Love,
Henny

  1. What a shame about the dress, could you perhaps make it into a skirt?

  2. Lol...I'm smiling at your dress story :)
I donated a beautiful basket to Goodwill some years ago, my daughter ended up buying it unbeknowns that I had donated it.
I love that little brown dress..

    1. And you probably would have given it to her had you known. That is so funny. I once bought a skirt my daughter had donated because it didn't fit right. It didn't fit me right either. :)

  3. I can understand your enchantment with the little brown dress. I love the color brown (maybe because it's the same color as dirt???) and strangely enough you don't see much brown clothing in stores----too much black and grey but very little brown. So I really look when I see a brown something and often succumb to actually buying it.

  10. Funny! I make purses out of wool sweaters. I had one sweater that I thought was too nice to cut up, so I gave it to a friend of mine as it was her size. This was a few years ago. Several months ago, she asked me if I wanted it back to make a purse out of. I replied I didn't think so because it was too nice to cut into pieces. A few weeks ago, I was at our Goodwill and noticed the same sweater and it had the right color tag to be 1/2 price, so guess what? I bought it! I am assuming my friend donated the sweater as it was the very same size too! Oh well......at least it was half price! It is cut up into pieces to make 2 handbags now.

    1. That is so funny! That sweater sure got around, didn't it? Seems like it would be hard to make a handbag from a sweater. I'll bet yours are beautiful.

  11. Too funny about buying the dress twice! I've often wondered if I would buy anything back that I have donated. Sometimes I see things in thrift stores that I have made and sold at the farmers markets. Makes me feel a bit sad:( Karen

    1. That is a bad feeling. Someone told me once that they bought a doll at a yard sale that looked like the ones I make. It probably was one of mine.

  12. That is so funny that you bought that dress TWICE! Too bad you couldn't alter it enough to make it fit. Maybe you could cut it up and make doll clothes. That way you won't buy it THREE times.

I've not seen Bun Bun before. I had a rabbit as a kid in the city, but he had a real knack for running around the yard and as he would turn in a circle, pee on you. Not funny!
