A new ducky

As far as day to day life goes, here is what touches my heart and makes me happy.  A very hungry young duck showed up on the pond this morning.  I noticed it swimming as hard as it's little webbed feet could paddle, right behind our old female duck.  It's like it was saying, "mama, wait, is that you?" The duck looks about half grown...

Thinking I'll probably never see this little duck again, I took pictures to show Poppy.  Sure enough, it left the pond.  Later, on my way to the chicken lot, I  met this baby duck waddling toward me.  I poured a pile of scratch feed on the ground and backed up a bit.   I probably could have stood there.  The duck was so hungry.  She ate all she could hold along with some old Roy dry dog food.  Do you think she will be ours??

I don't think this is a muscovy duck.  The coloring and the bill look different, and it has no sign of red on it's face...it almost has the look of a goose.  I'm thinking of names...if anyone has any suggestions!

I was back for another visit with my sister yesterday.  We had late afternoon plans that, guess what, got rained out!!  We were almost to our destination when we began getting flash flood warnings.  Immediately, the streets became flooded and I mean like 2 inches of rain fell in about 30 minutes.  We drove in the center lane and through the flooded streets and made our way out and back onto the interstate...toward home!!!  I've been worried this morning about a tree falling on the house.  The ground is so wet.  I should have named my blog "worry wart lane"!!  That sounds more like me!!!

Before the storm, we took a quick walk to the garden...in the big boots again...:)

That is one huge citron melon vine growing behind where Shelby is standing.  It goes on and on, and this is just 1 plant.   I'm sure there will soon be a pot of citron and sugar on the stove for making preserves.

Small citron melon...

Cows cooling in the shade...

Thank you for stopping by.  Hope to return soon!

  1. Awwwww, mama, that little duckling! How sweet! I am sure it will be yours, just like other little "wilds" that have felt comfortable with you and poppy!! I love seeing Aunt Shelby's farm. You and Shelby are so specialy. You have each other. That is so sweet! You are like two peas in a pod in one way, and like apples and oranges in another way!!!

  2. Good morning Henny.. What a bountiful garden, I am so in awe.. you and Lynn have the greenest thumbs in the state, I do believe. I love the pond and I believe your darling duckling does too..and loves you too... I think it will stay, I know I would.

Such a peaceful scene of the pond in the early morning..does a heart good. By the way, I am afraid of storms but I live in such a crowded neighborbood I just hide my head under the blankets. What's so funny is my dog crawls under there too! Lightning scares me because once when I lived at Dad's small farm lightning struck the gravel driveway and "chattered" across the concrete wall he had there, throwing concrete bricks everywhere, so I have that "healthy fear". But, I have walked home from school (probably you have too) in lightning and thunder and rain and never bothered me a bit.. Hmm. Seems like there are way too many storms lately, but it does make a wonderfully green garden. Have a wonderful day, Henny.. I love the blog - xo Terry

    1. Dear Terry,

Thank you. The little duck is still here!!! That's so sweet that your dog hides with you. We had another storm earlier today with lots of lightening and heavy rain. I was on my way to the grocery store. I'm not afraid if I am in the car. I can't imaging even being near something hit by lightening, like at your dad's. Take care!

  3. Hi Lynn's mom! You have a wonderful blog! I love your cabin (a dream of my husband's, to retire to a cabin in the woods). I can see where Lynn gets her creativity from!

I must say that miss Lynn has taught me everything I know about starting and writing this blog. She is a sweet sweet daughter. I can do some pretty dumb things on the computer!!

    1. Dear Jen,

I love the names. I think "Fiona" would be my favorite of your suggestions. I loved the movie "shrek"!! I also like "Ling Ling" suggested by Terry. Oh, all the names are so cute. Thank you for the help. I may have to let Poppy choose from these two. How about "Fiona Ling Ling"?? Seriously!

      Love,
      Henny

  6. Henny, I am so forgetful - always!
Thinking of names for your new baby duck - I think:
    Sweet Pea
    Gracie
Ling or Ling Ling - sort of like foundling, but a "pond-ling"
Betty - I have always loved this name

I know you will pick the right name, she already knows the word "home".

Thanks for putting this blog together, and Happy 4th of July - Terry

    1. Dear Terry,

I love the names. This is funny. From the names Jen suggested, I like "Fiona". I also love "Ling Ling". What do you think about "Fiona Ling Ling"? Thank you, and Happy 4th of July to you!!

    2. Henny - I think a nice name like Fiona Ling Ling is very sweet! Fiona is so very Scottish to me... but truthfully, I am sure she will be happy with any name as long as she has her home with you. Yours may be the home of the wayfaring strangers (animals) and you just don't know it yet.

I wish a Happy 4th for you and yours! I am working today and it has rained more than 2 inches overnight and my basement is full of water...but we keep going any way! Love ya - Terry

    3. Oh Terry, If I find anything to complain about today, I am going to think about you first! Working, 2 inches of rain, and a basement full of water!! I'm sorry! I don't remember ever having this much rain, this time of the year before. Wish we could give some of this rain to Arizona...

      Love,
      Henny
