Going to a festival

Sure wanted to finish the mowing, especially up around the garden, but it simply got too hot...95 degrees and no breeze. We decided to come inside. Maybe tomorrow??

Lots to be done inside too. Shelby and I have a big craft event coming up this Saturday the 4th., thanks to Shelby and her efforts. So, I've been back in the the little sewing room...

Got several new colorful aprons made, plus that little group of dollies there on the dresser...

Don't think I have ever had so many bonnets made at one time. The white bonnet with lavender flowers reminds me of my Aunt Berlie, and I really don't know why.  Maybe even more so, the apron in the first picture.

What do you think of the grey calico fabric? Kind of unusual, isn't it? Will it sell?

Have several gathering aprons with large pockets made too. Good for gathering eggs. Do I wear one?

Well no! I emptied food scraps to the chickens and brought the eggs back in the empty pan. Maybe I should try one of my aprons!

I like this one with the cherries, trimmed in cherry red. My dear friend Diane in Kentucky...if you happen to look in, thank you again for all the fabrics. I am still using!

Anyhow, this big event Saturday is the Butner Chicken Pickin' Festival". Butner is a small town about a 40 minute drive from here. Had never heard of it before but this will be its 28th year and was advertised in "Our State" Magazine.  We're excited!

You know what? I am still tinkering around with the raggedy old 30 year couch in the living room...

After covering the seat cushions with the $1.69 piece of gold upholstery fabric, from the thrift store, I ordered these yellow quilted pillow shams. It helped the looks so much. Now I want to order two more king size shams for the pillows in back. Hey, it's comfortable. :)

Guess that's about it for now. Thank you looking in. I did want to mention...

We have not seen the mother Wood Duck and her babies since that first day. Don't understand it. Just hope they survived and are safe somewhere. There is water, a creek on the other side of the dam at the pond. Guess we will never know.

Love, Henny

  1. Ohhh I like all your aprons and bonnets.

I was happy to see how you are dealing with an old sofa. Mine is about 15 years old but...I have an adorable kitty that has scratched it all up. I refuse to purchase another at this time because she will just use it as a scratching post. So I have been looking around trying to get some ideas...I've thought about the bed shams as well. My main problem are the sides of the sofa.

Anyway, I enjoy your blog and I believe this is the first time I have commented. Have a good day.

  2. Henny, I bet that gray calico will sell. There will be that one person who would enjoy the muted color. Your sewing is spectacular. I hope you and your sister sell out of every thing you take! And Chicken Pickin', hope that does not mean the way to pay in is to have to pluck anything! The wood duck family that I know of this Spring has not shown herself one time since I saw them a few weeks ago. If there is any kind of hidey hole vegetation, that is where she'll stash those tiny babes for a couple months. Have a great weekend. Hope the weather is fit, too.

  9. I love, love the white bonnet with lavender flowers and the apron too. Lavender is my favorite color and I had picked both out before I even read what you wrote! How do your aprons fasten in the back? You have so many beautiful things made. I think you will do very well at the festival. Gray is a very popular color so I'm sure it will sell.
How wonderful to have your very own farm fresh eggs. There is nothing like them is there?
I think your couch looks very comfy Henny. The shams were a great idea!
Wishing you a wonderful and prosperous day on Saturday.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  10. I agree that 'grey' is popular these days. My daughter uses it a lot in her Interior Design. Hope it sells well for you. You seem well prepared for the show. Enjoy!

  11. Henny, you accomplish so much, no matter what the weather! Pretty aprons and the cherry one is my favorite, too. It’s supposed to be a bit “cooler” (more like, less hot!) for us tomorrow so hopefully for you, too.

  12. You have so many lovely pieces to take along on Saturday. I wonder if your aunt Berlie wore a white and lilac print dress that you subconsciously remember. There must be a reason, right?

  13. That is so strange about the wood duck. But that is similar to my squirrel. She will be totally gone for two or three days and I will think to myself that I won't see her again only to have her come the next day as if she has not been missing.

That being said, I so love seeing what you make. I agree the gray is strange, but I like it. I think the cherry is my favorite. I wear an apron when I am frying something and don't want the hot greasing popping and getting on my clothes. Other than that, I never wear one. My mom always had an apron on.

  16. This post brought up a ton of memories of my grandmother and my aunt wearing aprons and bonnets. Mom worked in town so she didn't have much need for those items. As Bob Hope's theme song goes, 'Thanks For The Memories'.

  21. What lovely aprons! I like the idea of the gathering apron. How much is that one? I wished I lived closer I sure would go to your sale. I love crafty sales where people make things for sale. Do you mail your aprons? I don't have chickens but I sure am gathering enough from the yard in flowers or other things.

    1. No, I'm sorry, I do not. At one time I had a separate page on my blog showing my aprons and bonnets that are for sale. Maybe I should do that again...as soon as I get more made. The craft festival was the best Shelby and I have been to in a long time. Thank you!
