Couple of things here...well maybe three, or four!
Sure enjoyed your comments and thoughts about going barefooted! Got me to thinking about the dangers, and the injuries I've had because of running around without shoes...
like here in my bare feet...we were living here when, riding on the back of Shelby's bicycle, my heel caught in the bicycle chain. I remember my cut heel and the screaming and crying and scaring mama half to death.
And do you remember how easy is used to be to find broken glass on the ground? Seriously! We played Hopscotch, a lot! and the first step in playing was to find a piece of glass to throw. It was easy finding a piece...probably because back then, late 1940's, folks had trash piles where they dumped their garbage. There was no plastic, so it would have been just broken dishes, wood, paper, metal cans. It was fun looking for a pretty piece of a broken dish to play with.
Then in the 1950's after we moved from South Carolina back up to North Carolina...I was playing barefoot in the back yard and stepped on a jagged piece of a broken drinking glass. A jagged edge went between my toes, making a pretty bad cut.
Oh, and wading in mud puddles after a big rain. Now that was fun, except for mama telling us over and over how we would get worms.
And stepping on honey bees in the clover! The many stings I've had on the bottom of my feet!
And next friends, somehow, I deleted the main picture I wanted to show you of the strawberries Shelby and I picked. Duh! So, it will be at the bottom of this post.
And, thank you to my new follower. :) Whew! am I about caught up?
Now, I am not trying to sell anything here, but simply wanted to show you...
how my daughter Lynn...
is making junk journals. This must be the thing, now!
I was just watching and listening to her YouTube video about her latest journal, "The Lusty Month of May", springtime junk journal. When she finished the journal and listed it in her Etsy shop, it sold in two minutes! and all her journals sell like that.
Anyhow, if you would like to see that springtime journal, or how she makes these journals; it amazes me, go to youtube and enter abitofbirdsong then click on the one titled Lusty Month of May. I think it's pretty neat! She sure got her confidence and nerve from her dad and not from me. Goodness no!
Shy and backwards growing up; that was me...and haven't changed much over the years. Why, I used to ask mama if it was alright if I ate one of the biscuit she had cooked for breakfast. Once, when I was a teenager, I walked all the way to the garden where mama was busy chopping to ask if it was alright if I took a bath and was it alright to use the bar of soap laying on the bathtub. Scared to death of doing something wrong!
Don't you bet mama got tired of my questions? If she did, it never showed.
Now, here's those strawberries...
Bet you could hardly wait. :)
Okay, now I'm off to finish vacuuming, then it's outside to pick up sticks and limbs. We were under a severe storm warning late yesterday afternoon. Got high winds and lots of rain!
Thank you all!!
Love,
Henny

I'm glad glass is a thing of the past for the most part unless it's a wine bottle or a pickle jar
ReplyDeleteI still love going barefoot outside and would if we didn't have goat-heads here. Their roots go so deep and they are impossible to get rid of, at least with this big of a piece of property. Sometimes I get them stuck to the bottom of my shoes . . . better that than stepping on them. Now, I'm off to see your daughter's journals.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day.
Connie :)
Strawberries..you are so lucky! It will be another month before they are ready at my area. Lynn looks younger every year! I used to go barefoot in the summer, outside, until I got stung by a bee. I have always gone barefoot inside. I suppose I don't look too dignified! In the olden days, people like my parents used to go barefoot all summer because they had to "save" their shoes for school and church! (So that they lasted longer!) Andrea
ReplyDeleteDear Henny I just found your lovely blog. What a lovely post. There is something about going barefoot when those first warm days finally arrive. Going over to check out your daughter's you tube on journaling. Thank you for making my visit special. Take care and enjoy your first days of May.
ReplyDeleteI read this with one eye closed! Pretty sure you scared me as much as you scared your mom!
ReplyDeleteJunk journals? I have never heard of them. I will look it up!
I love the old photos of you! I went barefoot all summer as a child, too. And once I stepped on a nail and had to get a tetnus shot and was sure I was going to get lockjaw and die! And I don't know how many bee stings. We had lots of clover we were always running through where the bees hung out and it seems like once a summer ... surprise, another bee sting. We had Keds, too, but those were only put on to go someplace. And they came off the minute we got home. Oh my, those strawberries look local and soooo delicious!
ReplyDeleteI have many memories of barefooted days as a child. We didn't think about the dangers way back then. Your daughter sounds like a clever and creative soul. How wonderful her journals are snapped up so quickly. Love the photo of her. I too was a child whom seemed to ask permission for a lot of things....I never liked being in trouble. I am off to discover your beautiful daughter's world of junk journals. Have a lovely day.
ReplyDeleteI used to always stepped on nails. I also stepped in hot grill coals and got second degree burns on my foot. But I still like to go barefooted. My feet just are not as tough as they used to be.
ReplyDeleteLove you bunches
I never enjoyed going barefoot. Still don't. I guess I just didn't like dirty feet.
ReplyDeleteFirst of the season local strawberries are so special.
So tell me now. Are you in bare feet when you're vacuuming?
ReplyDeleteYes, I am, Red. :)
DeleteHenny, you got me to thinking about injuries from going barefoot. I spent most of my childhood summers barefoot and I guess I did have a few injuries. I once stepped on a bee and got stung - not so bad but it turned out I was allergic to bee stings and had to go to the hospital. Another time I was carrying in firewood and a scorpion came out of the woodpile and stung me on my foot. I remember my older brother was with me and called the doctor and they told him how to cut my foot with a razor to bleed out the poison. But you know what - he had to catch me first! You can have foot injuries with those flip-flops on too - I once stepped on a nail and it went through the flip-flop into my foot! Sorry, you just got me to remembering the old days. And if I went back in time I would still go barefoot!
ReplyDeleteI never heard of junk journals either. I'll go see what Lynn is doing!
PS
What did you make with those beautiful strawberries?
Bonnie, I hope you check back. Oh gosh! I'm surprised you ever went barefoot again after getting stung by a scorpion...and then to have your brother cut it. and I had forgotten about stepping on a nail. My sister did that. I had many bee stings, but I'm not allergic. Mama was terrified of going barefooted. About the strawberries, I sliced them, added sugar, and put them in the freezer, after eating a bunch! :)
DeleteYum! Strawberries now and later!
DeleteI too love to me in barefoot. I feel comfort while playing, running, jumping etc...
ReplyDeleteLove to eat straw berries:)
I love your stories of when you were a child. You must have been such a sweet child ( who grew up to be a sweet woman). At first when I saw the picture of Lynn I thought it was you! Since I have no idea what to do with a junk journal I'll go see what I'm missing.
ReplyDeleteI love going barefoot but so many hidden dangers puts me off these days I generally wear flip flops. There are no strawberry fields here locally I do miss picking them along with my Grandaughter.
ReplyDeleteDid you say late 1940s?? That would place in your 70s, no way! You're so young and in shape. I need to emulate you: work, work, work!
ReplyDeleteI love these stories(and photos) but they don't do much to convert me! You'll need to share the good times with your barefeet, too.
Like everyone else I had never heard of junk journals, I must find out...
Oh Pilar, I am 75! Thank you so much for the compliment. At this age, every day shows.
DeleteGood morning Henny, I am loving the story behind the cuts and scrapes of our youth, but we survived them and did well without plastic in spite of it all. That's a lovely photo of Lynn, she has your good genes! Love ya, Terry
ReplyDeleteThank you Terry. It is a wonder that we survived, looking back at some of the things we did.
DeleteThose were some great stories about going barefoot, I can relate. On a side note yesterday it was up to 80+ degrees and the pavement was hot as **ll and some idiot was walking a dog...the dog kept trying to get in the grass. Some people are stupid. Your strawberries look wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThe pictures are fantastic, and finished with the strawberries, I love them.
ReplyDeleteWe used to find a flat stone to play hopscotch with and we called it a 'potsy.'
ReplyDeleteNice to see the old pictures of you as a child. You look so cute!!
Oh those strawberries look wonderful.
Oh my, I surely am enjoying watching Lynn's YouTube videos! She's a natural for the camera, for sure! And, I love her journals. Talent surely runs in your family! Now about the barefoot thing, did anyone mention the problem of walking through the barnyard where the hens roamed freely. All I can say about that is, "Hurray for the old bitterweed." :~)
ReplyDeleteOh Chip, I sure do remember walking in the barnyard. That's another feeling you never forget. It's awful, all between the toes! :) Thank you for looking at Lynn's video.
DeleteYou have me chuckling here, Melba. It is a wonder how we made it out of childhood growing up in the 50's. Maybe it was because beer and sodas came in bottles back then that there was glass everywhere? My best friend was running with a RC Cola and fell and broke the bottle and landed on it! She almost cut her throat clear across. She had to be stitched up at the doctors and still has a big scar, but thankfully she didn't hit the vein and kill herself. Like I said, it's a wonder we lived through it.
ReplyDeleteI love being barefoot too, and growing up in the country had my share of cuts and bee stings too!
ReplyDeleteI checked out your daughter on youtube. She is very talented and creative!
Ok you've just reminded me to keep my shoes on!! Perhaps I can go barefoot on the deck but other than that I'll skip it! Your daughter is gorgeous, Henny!!!
ReplyDeleteWow, that seems so early for strawberries, the outside ones here will be ready in a month. I did see some at the market on Sunday, but they were greenhouse grown, they were so perfect looking! The junk journal, is interesting, I could see making one for myself, but I can't imagine buying one that someone else had made. That said, glad that gorgeous Lynn is able to sell them so quickly!
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of the kind of fabric prints you often use for your bonnets and aprons, I can see where Lynn gets her design sense. Her journals are fascinating.
ReplyDeleteJust a test. I can't post on another blogspot blog and wonder if it is that end or mine. Just trying yours to see what happens.
ReplyDeleteThose are such adorable photos of you!! Your daughter's journal is very cool. I enjoyed the video. How wonderful that they sell so fast! That's great. Happy yard cleaning :) We are also in the midst of May yard beautification, and isn't it fun?
ReplyDeleteI used to go barefoot quite a bit, but haven't in years. I alway remember my brother jumping down from something and running a rusty nail up through his foot! But, oh, how loved the squishy mud after a rain//1
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing your daughter's videos...while I am laid up, I have sure watched a lot of videos..
ReplyDeleteLynn is so inspiring! I loved her videos. I'm going to make a junk journal!
ReplyDeleteHello Dear Friend,
ReplyDeleteI am catching up. May is a busy month here. Our oldest son is graduating from H.S. We have the garden, farmer market planning and two birthdays! Golly. ;-)
Happy Mother's Day my friend. I love my aprons. The cherry one is my favorite, fits me perfect.
xx oo

My wife is of Mennonite background. When she was young going barefoot was standard as soon as summer came, and to this day you still see practicing Mennonites walking in the country without shoes.
