A little gardening

Haven't had much to post about lately, and hate to keep talking about the weather.

These surprise lilies have been simply beautiful...

Surprise, because I had no idea what the color would be. I bought them last year after Mother's Day. The blooms had fallen off and Lowes had reduced them to $3.00.

Like most folks, I've been busy in the teeny tiny garden. It's looking kinda pretty, but doesn't show that way in a picture. Not yet anyhow.

See, it's a little skimpy looking. I've built four tee pees; one each for crookneck squash, cucumbers, zucchini, and pole beans, and did get around to building the little wattle fence for the green beans.

There are also two eggplants, four tomato plants, two pepper plants, short row of okra, onions, and leeks. When all is big and healthy, I will take another picture.

just a little view of the garden from the outside.

Have you ever seen so much yarrow! Last summer I bought a pot of yarrow and put it in the herb garden...it bloomed a little and never came back. This, however, is wild yarrow and has taken over part of the front yard. After mowing down lots of it, I decided to leave this patch and watch it bloom. What is yarrow good for anyway?

Guess I'll get up from here. Poppy had to work a few hours today, but will be home shortly.

I'm simply beat, friends. I've mowed the back forty, :) (wish we had a back forty), I've potted up several plants, hauled several wheelbarrow loads of leaf mulch to put between the garden rows, cleaned out four bunny boxes and added fresh hay,  and let's see...there's more, but I'll stop here and go find something to cook for supper. Thank you, if you are still here.

Love,
Henny

  3. Oh Henny, you always work so hard! You deserve a rest once in a while. Those lilies are amazing - I have never seen any that color. I don't know anything about yarrow and did a google search on it. It does flower and supposedly there are some health uses for it but I would check with someone with experience with it. I bet you will hear from someone here.

  4. Henny your lily blooms are stunning!

If you google yarrow, you will see it has lots of health benefits. I think the flowers are oh so pretty.

Your veggie garden looks off to a great start and before too long you'll be enjoying the harvest.

Have a great weekend ~ FlowerLady

  5. You have a wonderful garden; and well done on all the work you put in. We have limited ourselves to fruit trees; apples, pears, cherries which are easier to manage.

    God bless.

  7. I always enjoy seeing your garden. Mine is growing very well, but in photos I don't think it would look very lush. We need a little more warm weather and sunshine and then it will be worthy of photos. Your lilies are beautiful, what a fun surprise :) It's a busy time of the year, but isn't it fun being outside and digging in the warm earth? I love it!
Have a happy Memorial Day weekend.
    Connie :)

  10. Until I read Connie's comment I had forgotten that you have a long weekend. We had ours last week
( Victoria Day) Mind you, being retired it doesn't make much difference to us if it's a 3 day weekend or not.
Your Lilies are gorgeous. I think I once had some that colour and enjoyed them for years. Then one Spring they didn't come up.
Everything in your garden is coming along nicely.
Enjoy your weekend and dodn't work TOO hard.

  11. My goodness, you do a lot. The yarrow is pretty, I wouldn't want to mow it down at all. Those lilies are ravishing! How are the Rose of Sharon doing?

  12. Maybe you could use yarrow to dye fabric or wool.
I think everything is looking VERY inviting in your garden, Henny!

  13. Don't laugh---my grandmother used to use yarrow to make you sweat out a cold or fever. Not sure if that is a real use or not-but that is what she used it for. I also like it for filler in a flower arrangement! Love your garden area, Henny. It looks great.
Have a blessed Memorial Day weekend. xo Diana

  15. What a lucky pick when you found those lilies. The color is beautiful. It makes me think of fireworks some how. That yarrow is really going to town. I have a bed with probably 6 or 7 yarrows in it and they have done almost nothing over the past couple of years. Wish they would fill out like yours. I'm giving them some of the manure that I got last fall in hopes of giving them some umph! I think the wild yarrow is white and is much stronger and more vigorous than hybrids and so will take over when they are planted together. They make nice fillers for bouquets and dry nicely for winter arrangements.

    1. I thought so too Vic. I figured the lilies would turn out to be yellow. I don't understand why the tall yellow yarrow I bought and planted, didn't do good.

  18. You can dry the blossoms upside down and they make a nice lacy addition to a dried flower bouquet. For that matter, they are nice in a fresh bouquet of summer flowers, too. It has some medical qualities but I don't like the taste of yarrow tea. It taste just like it smells. Love those surprise lilies.

  20. Hi Henny...wow, what a pretty Lily. Mine are just opening now and are the deep purple. I am so behind in gardening but get a little done each day. I don't know anything about yarrow but it is a nice looking plant. I have a real issue with clover here. It tries to take over. I will be posting soon as I have someone I would like you to meet. ;-)
Enjoy your evening and love to all the furries.

  21. I love your little garden! I buy up plants like that all the time too, the clearance ones, and pretty much w/out fail....they turn into some of the prettiest and best growing of all!---they just need a little love, right?! Your lilies are pretty. Ours are in bloom too.

  22. It is amazing how a few dabs of farm work will wear you out! I find that to be true most mornings. Your garden looks GREAT! Look at that beautiful leaf mulch. It will keep things happy. Sounds like you have a great assortment of veg.

Yarrow -- it is wonderful for your skin. Pick a big handful of leaves, and make sure they're free of dirt and bugs :) Break them up and put them in an old mason jar with about half olive oil and half coconut oil. If you have dandelion leaves, add them as well. And if you can identify plantain leaves (the weed) they are fabulous. Just set that jar with a lid on it on your warm porch for a few days, shaking it a bit as you remember. You'll have a wonderful oil for your skin. If you have some beeswax, melt and add it to thicken it. Even an end of a beeswax candle will do. IF you scratch yourself in the garden or burn yourself cooking or get some bug bites, put this ointment on generously. Keep it in that mason jar, and when it's nearly gone, make some more :) Your skin will thank you!

    1. Oh - should have added: strain out the leaves before you add beeswax or before you use it :)
