Complaining again!

Poppy mowing around the green pond...

Maybe we could hire somebody to bring in a bulldozer and push the whole darn yard down hill and into the pond.

The bamboo grass has taken over the yard and garden. Looks like a horror movie. I fully expect to wake up one morning and find the entire cabin woven into a web of bamboo grass with no way out.

The squash bugs have killed the cucumber, zucchini, and yellow squash vines, and we still have not had the first red tomato from our garden, not even one! The tomatoes rot on the vine before ripening. Just been one of those summers.

But wait! There is still sweetness...

Our neighbors, Kristine and Robert, gave us six baby guineas.

All baby animals are adorable, aren't they?

Simply adorable!

and while we're out around the chicken lot...

The hens like watermelon just about as much as I love watermelon.

I love the little black hen in the middle with her feathered legs. She was hatched just this spring. Why, she just may be the real "Chicken Little".

Guess I had better get up from here and start thinking about something to cook for supper. If it were up to me, Pizza Hut would deliver a large pepperoni  pizza, with bread sticks on the side. :)

Love,
Henny

  1. I wish you had not mentioned pizza and bread sticks - that sounds so good to me! lol
Those little guineas are so sweet. What a cute shot of the chickens enjoying watermelon. Love the little black one and her legs! I hope you have a good evening and week ahead.

    1. Thank you Mildred! We didn't eat pizza. I cooked. Poppy doesn't care much about pizza, darn it!

  2. Isn't it awful when something starts to take over. Ahhhhhhh...Makes you crazy. I have been fighting the wild morning glory in the grass that makes it' way to my gardens and tries to choke everything. I detest it. I love your pond, though. :) And those guineas are adorable. I wish I could make up my mind whether to have chickens next year. Still unsure. Sorry to hear about the loss of veggies. I'd be upset about that, too. Oh well, there's always next year. Where's Smokey? I looked everywhere on this post but can't see him. He must be in a hidey-hole. :)

    1. Hey Deb! I should have put Smokey in here somewhere! :) You would probably love having chickens and gathering a few eggs every day. Our biggest problem has been keeping them safe. Once our hens die of old age, I never want more than three or four, ever again. We've lost four hens this summer, and it always makes me sad. I get attached to everything. I know that wild morning glory vine you're talking about. Those things grow like crazy!

  3. The weeds have taken over our garden, just too hot to weed. The guineas are cute. All of our tomatoes have died, we had a few from them, but no many. Like you said, one of those summers.

    1. Hey Janet! Yep, me too...I'm giving up on the garden. It's too hot and humid to worry over it.

  4. The pond looks rather pretty even with the bamboo grass. Of course, I'm not there to see it first hand but in the photo - not bad. I'm sorry that your garden is not producing. That must be disappointing. The guineas are adorable though. Are the hens having a watermelon seed spitting contest? Have a good evening.

    1. Hey Melanie! I believe that was a seedless watermelon. :) We've had a little of everything this summer...algae on the pond, bamboo grass, squash bugs, Japanese beetles, worms in the tomatoes...The sweet little guineas make it all better though. Hope you have a good week.

  5. Sorry about the invasive bamboo and also the rotting veggies. At this time in summer I always hit a spot where I wonder why in the world I bother with tomatoes or cucumbers or any other vegetable. They demand too much effort for the bit of produce we get. I vow next year I will remember this!!!
The guinea chicks are cute. Are they in the new enclosure that you built?

    1. Thank you! I know what you mean. I wonder too why I even try to grow vegetables. Maybe you can remind me of that next year! :) No, the guineas are in a pen we built for bantams, but I haven't had any luck raising bantams. Sometimes I think we should move into town!

  6. I had always heard about Kudzu (spelling?) taking over the south and was astonished when we actually saw it. I imagine it is like that with your bamboo grass. And, I really am taken with your little hen and friends.

    1. Oh Kudzu!! I think bamboo grass grows about as fast as Kudzu but not as tall! They say Kudzu grows a foot a day and I believe it! Thank you Sharon!

  7. That's terrible about the bugs ruining ypur squash and cucumbers. We do have our first almost red tomato fairlyy early for us.
What does the bamboo grass look like? Photo please.

    1. Hey Linda. I know. I hate it. This has not been a good gardening season. I will post about bamboo grass. It is the easiest grass to pull, but it will actually weave together and cover plants, if left alone, and I haven't been able to weed much this summer because of my back.

  8. That bamboo grass sounds like it could become a real problem. Hope Poppy can mow it down and keep it under control.

Those feathered legs of the little black chicken are really something. You could bring her in the house and she could just walk around and do all your dusting for you. She could be useful as well as ornamental.

    1. Hey Vic! I love that little hen too! It does look like two feather dusters on her little feet!

  10. Bamboo is terrible when it gets a foothold! But if you need a security screen, that will do it!
I'm glad I got the tomatoes I did before the heat and horn worms found them.
You all be safe and enjoy your baby guineas!

    1. Linda, do you know what kind of worm makes small holes in tomatoes? It is a black worm. So far, I haven't seen a horn worm this summer, but I'm sure there some in the garden. We've had everything else! Have a good week!

  11. those little babies are adorable! Are they real active? So did you get the pizza or end up cooking? Its hard for me to get in the "cooking mood" during these hot hot days of summer. Its not like we don't have air conditioning....but it still just does not appeal to me some days, and I am one who generally likes to cook. The heat just makes me lazy...after I come in from it I am still tired and drained even in a nice cool house. Oh---I didn't know that they would like/eat watermelon! The neat things we learn from our blog friends!

    1. Little Guineas are very active! They run and try to fly and chase each other. Really fun to watch. I hate cooking on these hot humid days too and even though the air conditioner is running, the house heats up. I've got to visit your blog and catch up!

  13. Adorable babies and loved the chickens with the watermelon. Such a shame about the squash bus affecting your crops, something has invaded my cabbage patch which a disappointment.

  16. What a kind neighbor you have, giving you those sweet little guineas, and that black feathered-leg hen is darling !
I've always heard that bamboo is very invasive, is it the same as bamboo grass ?
Shame about your garden, lets hope the bugs take a vacation and you are able to harvest and enjoy some of your vegetables.
It's a hot and humid August already :)

  17. It has been a crazy summer all around for gardeners. I am taking care of a neighbours gardens while they are away. The rabbits have chewed every bean plant down to nothing, the tomatoes are pitiful, and the bugs are attacking the rest of the veggies.
    Love all the hens!
    Have a great week!

  18. Nice reflection of Poppy in the pond. : )
Too bad about your garden. Some of my things are doing good, others not so good.
    Cute little guineas.
I'm really thinking about getting some chickens so can have fresh eggs. Any advice?

  19. I love that black hen also - she's adorable! Pepperoni pizza sounds really good right about now! But, there are a billion zucchinis to eat up, so I guess it's zucchini something or other tonight for me!

  20. The little Guineas are so sweet and they look like they fit right in with the rest of your flock. Garden disasters are so discouraging and frustrating after all the work you put in. I feel the same way, but then the next season rolls around and I'm right back in there, trying to grow things. We left all things growing behind when we moved up the coast to Georgetown except the lemon and lime trees and I miss walking outside to pick things to add to the pot when I'm cooking.

  21. Hi, I have not kept up commenting on my bloggers very well lately with the move and the Lyme. Hope to do better! Sorry this has not been a very good gardening year for you. Always next year to look forward to! Yes, baby animals are so sweet. I enjoy our Coco but she is no longer a baby! Nancy
