Ideas!

From the kitchen window...

My plan this morning was to take care of the animals, straighten the house, you know; make the bed, put the dishes away, clean the litter boxes, sweep the kitchen, then go straight up to the garden and set out two more "Rose of Sharon trees". So far, I've planted four!

Oh friends, the idea hit me a few nights ago, in the middle of the night, of course, when all the world around me was sleeping peacefully...

"Plant a hedge, a privacy hedge, using all those Rose of Sharon trees in pots up at the garden"!

Why, I thought daylight would never come, so I could get started on that hedge!

Couldn't find a good picture to show you, but see the dirt path there behind Poppy? Well, it doesn't show in the picture, but there is a good wide space between the garden fence and the road, and also a wide open view from the road to our house.

A hedge of "Rose of Sharon", planted two feet apart would not only block the view, but be pretty, and cost us nothing! I've been potting  little Rose of Sharon sprouts that come up and some of them actually bloomed last summer. Rose of Sharon is a fast grower.

Anyhow, my plan changed early this morning when I looked out and saw the rain. Where did this rain come from? It's cold, it's windy, and it's raining again!

So, maybe tomorrow I can add two more little trees to the hedge.

Sorry to always be showing you views from the kitchen, but it seem there is always activity out there. What ever would I do without my little kitchen window...

Looks like we need new rope for the swing, and definitely a new clothesline. Poppy recently asked me why the clothesline was sagging??

Better get the supper dishes washed.  Thank you, and I hope to be back soon.

Love,
Henny

Oh wow!! I have two new followers. Thank you so much!!

Henny, you have a regular convention of cardinals at your house.....you are blessed! We used to have many like that, but not since we moved to our new house. :( I think your idea for a Rose of Sharon Hedge is just awesome...I can't wait to see it take shape. Thanks for another great day on your blog!

    1. Hey Diane! We are shocked sometimes at the number of Cardinals! I can never get them all in a picture because a lot of them fly when I put the camera up to the window. Hope the Rose of Sharon grow fast and it won't be long before I can post a picture. Thank you Diane!

  2. A Rose of Sharon hedge will be perfect! Too bad it rained; hopefully tomorrow the sun will shine.
It rained here too, all day long, until the sun came out at 5 o'clock. Kind of late for going out and doing the things I wanted to do. I did get my little onion sets planted.

  3. I love that idea, Henny! Sounds like a perfect solution all the way around---now for it to quit raining. That is so disappointing when you are raring to go and the weather doesn't cooperate. xo Diana

  4. Hi there, I've been reading your blog for a few weeks and thought I'd finally come out and say hello. :) I have Rose of Sharon bushes in my backyard and I really like them. Mine are short, and wouldn't make much of a hedge, but I think a hedge with them sounds beautiful! Mine have fuchsia colored flowers. Is that first photo with the cardinals a view from your kitchen window? How amazing to have some many cardinals at once! Wow!

    1. Hey Jennifer! Thank you! I appreciate the comment. Oh, I love the fuchsia colored Rose of Sharon and wish these I'm planting were that color. These are more of a lavender, which is not my favorite. A neighbor pulled up two of her's and that is how I got a start.

  5. You are busy all the time. You could use 48 hours in a day.

  6. I've been thinking of making a row of crepe myrtles or some other prettty bush or trees....haven't thought of rose of sharons. I don't have much of a green thumb...but man I can grow pine trees! Now I wish I had never planted any.

  7. I think your idea of a privacy hedge of Rose of Sharon is great! A friend gave us one recently, and we haven't planted it yet. Seems like they grow quickly, are pretty, and bees love them. We also need a hefty privacy barrier between our house and the road. Good luck! Here's hoping tomorrow will be warmer. We're so tired of this COLD, WET, WINDY weather!

  8. I love rose of Sharon. I have one - just one. My husband isn't crazy about it because of where it is and the fact that it does want to spread. It will make a beautiful fence along your property. I'm jealous of your cardinals. I love birds and have lots of them here, but the number of cardinals has dwindled. I hardly see one any more. Do you ever use your swing? I remember when you had Poppy fix it so you could use it. You're always so busy I don't see how you'd have time to swing.

    1. Hey Peg! I love Rose of Sharon too and tried for years to get one to grow. Now, it seems like every little sprout takes root. My mother did not like Rose of Sharon. I wish now that I had ask her why. She loved flowers though. I really do enjoy sitting down in that swing even if for just a few minutes. I love a swing! We bought the wrong kind of rope and it has rotted. That is on my to do list for this summer. Yes, I posted at least three times about that swing and got lots of laughs. The swing broke with Poppy, and I fell out of it once...we had a time with that swing!

  9. That is a great idea. I have a lot of rose of sharons also I think they are pretty. I am thinking this year I might buy me a new whiskey barrel and put some geraniums in it. I am so ready for spring and gardening time. Love you bunches!

  10. There nothing better than the view from the kitchen window... and I do love the Rose of Sharon Trees..They have such beautiful blossoms.
I just wish the six feet of snow we have would melt( ha Ha) .. The sun is shining so it should be Springtime soon...I too would love to be out in the garden. Love that little face on the tree( ha Ha) ....Have a Happy Easter !!!!

  11. What a brilliant idea to plant a Rose of Sharon hedge! I can't wait to see it. Love the pictures you have posted today. I can never get over the number of cardinals you have there. We are excited when we see a couple here. How nice to see your guineas - are those the babies grown up? I remember when they were little things!

    1. Thank you Bonnie! Yes those are the baby guineas. They grew up fast. In spring, guineas can drive you crazy. It is mating time and they fight, and run, and fly into things. It is crazy! Hope the Rose of Sharon grow fast!

  12. Hi Henny,
A squirrel chewed our clothesline off this winter. We also have to replace our clothesline.
    Have a blessed Easter,

  13. The view from the kitchen window is always the most important in any home. I do love your red birds.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I loved Red's comment, "You could use 48 hours a day." :~) And, couldn't we all at this time of year. It's good to see the guineas doing well. Take care...

  15. That swing looks a bit dangerous! A big window over the kitchen sink is an essential in my house, so I can keep an eye on just about everything! Your hedge is a great idea, especially since you have free bushes. My clothesline sags because the post rotted off and we have the post tied up to a tree. One of those jobs that we just don't want to deal with.

  16. I loved your header picture with all of the cardinals. I've been hearing the chirp of a baby cardinal lately, spring is definitely here in s.e. FL.

Getting ideas or worries in our heads in the middle of the night, making us excited or anxious, when there is nothing we can do at the moment about them. :-) I know all to well about both.

Your idea for using rose of sharon babies that you already having growing in pots as a privacy hedge is fantastic, plus you got them for free. You and your passers-by will love the new look. Your property will also be greener, cleaner and cooler with that hedge, keeping the fuel exhaust from vehicles at bay. What color are your rose of sharon flowers? I can hardly wait to see the result of your planting.

Hope you get some nice spring weather soon. Happy Spring and Happy Easter ~ FlowerLady

  17. When we first moved to our current homestead, I dug up many rose of sharons I had at the last home, and planted a hedge here. It blocks off the traffic from my back porch (more like my side porch), but it gives a nice color in the summer and privacy too.

  18. That sounds like a good plan and fun to do. And I agree that the view from your kitchen window is the best. Love to all.

  19. What a lovely idea and plan, my friend. And like you, ideas often come to mind when I'm laying bed and it's 2:00 in the morning {{smiles}}

Have a most beautiful day, dear one. Hugs!

  20. Having a view from the kitchen window is a must for me. After all we spend a great deal of time standing at the sink and having a view makes it so sweet. I cannot believe all the Cardinals in that first photo. We do not have them here and I miss seeing them. Back in Indiana it seemed like Cardinals, Bluejays and Robins were everywhere, we don't have Bluejays here either. We do have Doves and in the morning your yard is filled with them and sometime even Quail. So Rose of Sharon are fast growers; I'm looking for something like that. I will have to see if they grow here and if I can find them. We really don't have a good nurses around here and mostly depend on Walmart, Home Depot and Lowes.
    Happy Easter!
    Connie :)

  21. I have had things like that come to me in the middle of the night too so I completely understand your comment about thinking daylight would never come so you could get to that project. :-) Such a hard worker you are, my friend. Our Rose of Sharon that was here when we moved here 19 years ago is getting cut down this year. I saved it from hubby's chainsaw for two years but I finally told him the other day to have at it because it really has died. I still have one left and it is so pretty when it blooms.

  22. Mel, I won't live in a house without a kitchen window. More specifically, a window over the sink! I am blessed to have not only the sink window but also a two large side by side windows looking out over the back field. Everything I love (grandbabies, animals, birds) plays in the yard so I must be able to see out! One of my favorite bushes is the Rose of Sharon. I planted one at our old house that was a triple colored bush. It had the fushia, lavender, and white blooms. I was so sad when we moved and I had to leave it!

    Grace & Peace,
    Pam

  23. A rose of Sharon hedge will be perfect there! Good idea. We have so many cardinals, too, and I love watching their bright colors as I am working in my kitchen, too. Today I noticed two males were amorously pursuing one female. Her scraggly little crest feathers were all sticking up like she was at her wits end over these two madmen!

  24. We are having a rainy day but it is warm in the 50's.
Love all the cardinals, they really stand out in any season.
I like rose of sharon and it sounds like a great idea for your planting them there. I had quite a few of those in one of the places we've lived.

  25. Oh my gosh all those beautiful cardinals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Rose of Sharon, I must add that to my list of shrubs to add to my landscape. Thanks for the reminder!!

  26. Daisy wanted plant some things this year, one of her choices takes like 200 days....nope

  27. We've been seeing a lot of Cardinals lately too. But not as many at once as your picture shows. We have one really bright red little male that my daughter-in-law saw one day and thought he was fake... as he was such a brighter red than the others. And I too agree that the views from my kitchen window (over the sink) keep us entertained.

  28. Beautiful photograph of the cardinals. I brought the tablet to my mom to see it and she went wild counting them! I think she decided there were 13 of them but I'm sure she got confused and repeated some. The guineas are very pretty, too. I hope your Rose of Sharon hedge is a success, even if they don't provide a great amount of height, it's still a good idea.

  29. I love all your Cardinal birds and your garden. You sound like you have a very busy day...everyday. Thanks for saying goodbye on my blog. It has been a joy following along with your blog. I will miss your post.

  30. We have cardinals like that here. They area always doing something. :)
You will get your Rose of Sharon hedge yet. :)

  32. I love Rose of Sharon but do not have any at our current home. This has been the wildest week weather-wise. Earlier in the week, it was so raw/cold. Yesterday, I was sitting on the porch in short sleeves! lol
    God bless your day.

  33. A Rose of Sharon hedge sounds beautiful. Love the view from your kitchen window.

  34. Your hedge sounds like a wonderful and beautiful idea. What color are they?

Aren't those middle of the night good ideas great-----so much better than laying there worrying about something. It's so much fun when you have perennial divisions or seedlings from your own bushes to add to the scenery around the yard. There's nothing like homegrown freebies!

  35. Happy Easter Henny! I love the view of the cardinals and guineas from your kitchen window. Hard to think about work looking at that view. I would love to plant some bleeding heart and lily of the valley this year, since mine has all died, generally from neglect. Rose of Sharon grows really well everywhere and I think it would be pretty too! Can't wait to see what idea you come up with next. I also want a sweet bubby bush which is hard to find apparently. Any way, XO Terry

  36. The Rose of Sharon idea sounds just perfect. Your photo of all of those cardinals is amazing. That is a view quite familiar to me as well but I can never seem to get my camera in time to capture so many all together at one time. Happy Easter!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well, of course I love Rose of Sharon, my mother named me after the bush. It's a pretty flower. I think a whole hedge would be wonderful to look out upon and looking forward to seeing yours when it gets done. I know what you mean about an idea coming to you at night and hardly being able to wait for daylight to come!

  38. What a nice hedge the Rose of Sharon would make! Nancy

  39. Okay, that's not a REAL PICTURE, IS IT!!?-- with all those cardinals? ha ha LOl wow, so many, I've never seen so many like that. So so beautiful, I'm glad you got a picture of it. And they are so bright and show up so good. My Grandma had alot of rose of sharon bushes in their yard, I remember them blooming. Did you get any more planted? Hope you've had a good week and do ya'll have plans for Easter?

  40. What an incredible picture of all the cardinals in your yard! We don't have them here, and what a treat it is to always see their cheerful colors! I love your Rose of Sharon idea! I haven't tried to replant the shoots of one, because I just planted mine a couple of years ago. However, I will keep that in mind for future reference! Signs of spring are around us here, but no planting going on yet, other than seeds being started in my little greenhouse. Blessings and hugs :)

  41. I am so jealous of all your Cardinals. They are my favorite bird, but we don't have any here in our part of CA. You can't post too many pictures of them.

  42. Oh, the cardinals! So many! So red! I love them!
I like your hedge idea and I hope you can begin soon.
    Our clothesline is sagging, too.
    Happy Easter, good Henny!

  43. Apparently you know something I don't!
I need some detail on how to pot ROS sprouts -- we have two along our fence line.

  44. So many Cardinals! I love them.

There's something so peaceful about gardens, though they are a lot of work.

It's good to see you back, Penny!
