Reading

I forget to read!

Seems like every time Shelby and I go in a thrift store, she finds another Jan Karon book. She has read and collected them all, so now she picks them up for me.

I am not a big reader, and I'm sure it shows in my blogging...my third grade vocabulary. :) When we were growing up, Mama used to say, "Shelby keeps her head stuck in a book all the time", and she did. I didn't have time to read...too many dolls to think about, and playhouses to build. Why, it was more fun to sit outside in the leaves, on the sunny side of the house daydreaming, than to sit somewhere reading. All through school I read only what was absolutely necessary to get a passing grade and lots of the time, didn't even do that much. Sure wish I had done better back then.

It was Shelby who talked me into reading the book, "At Home In Mitford". I loved it and could hardly put the book down. A while back, she gave me Jan Karon's second book, "A Light in the Window". Reading the first sentence or two of this book put me right back there in Mitford with Father Tim...it felt like being home. I read several pages before turning the book over on the coffee table and going to the kitchen to start supper. Not once, since then, have I thought about the book. I simply forget to read!

Hope it warms up a little soon. We are on day four of cold weather. It was 27 degrees again this morning.

It will be just Poppy and me here tomorrow with no big plans for Thanksgiving. We will be going down home on Sunday for a big dinner with some of Poppy's family.

Hope you all have a very happy Thanksgiving!

Love,
Henny

  1. A peaceful Thanksgiving sounds pretty good, too.
And thank you for reminding me about Jan Karon - opening one of those books is like putting on a pair of comfy slippers.

  2. I enjoy Jan Karon's books too. I recently gave the set of Mitford books to my Mum and she is enjoying them too.
Hope you and Poppy have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  3. I also love her books! I'm always hoping for a new one. I sort of feel like the lives of the characters are going on without me! I got them from the library on CDs and listened to them while sewing or doing dishes or whatever. I don't remember who reads the audiobooks but I love the voice.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, Henny.

  4. Maybe life just takes over and gives you no free time. I like to stock up books and read them in the Winter when staying home just makes more sense than venturing out.

  5. Happy Thanksgiving! I keep trying to read- my favorite time has always been at night I love to fall asleep reading a good book. Now I read three sentences on my kindle and I am out like a light. I swear I have been on the same page now for about a month.

  7. Have a safe trip Sunday. We're going to have dinner with relatives, too, but I just had to have turkey here at home. They're at the lowest price all year so I bought one to fix for us next week. We love leftovers and when we go somewhere else, we don't have them! I bought a second turkey so we can have one at Christmas when my sister and brother-in-law come here. Holidays are a lot of work, but there's nothing like being with family. I've never read any of those books. I'll have to put them on my list. Right now I'm in the middle of a 500 page book, so it'll be a while, and a friend gave me 2 books a couple of days ago. Stay warm.

    1. Thank you Peg. We usually but two turkeys too. Really Ham is my favorite, always! But I bake a turkey. Holidays really are a lot of work. I miss having everybody here. Sounds like you've got plenty of reading to do. Hope you all have a good Thanksgiving.

  9. I was the complete opposite of you and always had a book in my hands. My mom used to yell at me for reading so much!!
Haven't read any of Jan Karon's books but know so many people who like them. They are on my list.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

  10. I have read all Jan Karon's books, and loved them. I love to read, my goal is to read 75 books a
year, last year I read 78, including my Bible. (I read through it every year, different version
each year). Don't think I will reach 75 this year, am at number 62 right now. I have started the
adult coloring & love that too, it is taking some of my reading time! Happy Thanksgiving!

    1. Oh my goodness! That is a lot of reading. I sure admire you for that. I've read the New Testament through and part of the Old Testament...I just cannot get completely through the Old Testament. That is some hard reading, but I'm trying. I really think that I would enjoy those adult coloring books but then I think about all the other things like sewing and making little dolls that I need to finish...so I put off buying one. Mama and I used to laugh about how we both enjoyed coloring...even in a child's coloring book.

  11. I think you're a person who's always busy doing something and that's why you don't get much reading done. I used to read more than I do now but I think partly it's because I spend time at my computer. Time that I might have spent reading before I had one. Actually, you inspire me to do more things outside. You're the main reason I wanted a bunny too. And just by some strange coincidence someone abandons theirs. Isn't that strange?
    Have a lovely quiet Thanksgiving

    1. Thank you! I am so happy about your bunny. I can just imagine how happy it will be and how pretty, in a cage among all the flowers in your yard. I do love bunnies. The computer really dose take up time and like you, I love being outside.

  12. We are on Whidbey Island with some of Tom's family, at the cabin. It's very wet and windy here, not nice at all. I'm going to get cabin fever. How can I walk off Thanksgiving dinner? I did bring rain gear. I may just have to brave it.

    1. Hey Linda. Being in a cabin on Whidbey Island in the wind and rain sounds might cozy to me. You have more willpower than anybody I know, well kinda know, so I can picture you out walking there. Happy Thanksgiving!

  13. I read a lot as a child, but these days I don't have a lot of time for reading. Now that Winter is f fast approaching I do tend to read more. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

  14. My mother used to say the same about me. I was reading any moment I could get. I used to read while drying the dishes, and I used to read in the bathtub....Still love to read. Happy Thanksgiving!

  15. I cannot tell you how many books I start and then just never finish them, even though I like them! Glad it is not just me! lol
It was just the 2 of us for T-day also but our sweet neighbors brought us 2 plates from their big holiday dinner - so sweet and delicious!
    God bless your weekend. xoxo
