Poppy and the Leaves

Today after lunch, Poppy sat down to watch the noon news, before going hunting.  I went outside and picked up the rake!!  Where to begin!!  The spot I raked clean last week was covered in leaves again!!!

Poppy must have fallen asleep watching the news.  It was getting on near 2:00.  Thinking, I would drag off one more sheet load of leaves and stop for the day, I glanced up and saw Poppy coming toward me.  He was walking fast, looking rather intently at my work...is something wrong, I ask.  He didn't answer.  He walked on past me and my rake, and threw himself into that pile of leaves!  He surely did...

He said, "actually, this is pretty comfortable".  It just looked so funny!!  I should have raked him onto that king size sheet with the leaves and pulled him to my leaf dump.

The chickens following me around finding morsels of food and bits of grass that have been covered by the leaves...

I am making a progress...I need to think of this as two hours of exercising every day.  According to the info found on line, a person weighing 150 pounds burns 242 calories an hour raking leaves!  Wow!  I should be slim and trim...

We need to keep encouraged!  Thank you for looking at my blog.

Love,
Henny Penny

  2. Ha Ha! Henny, Poppy gotcha this time, huh - probably too heavy to tote off in the sheet, though! Your chickens are so beautiful and so is the homestead, lookis great.. just think, maybe all those leaves will be good compost by spring. Much love being sent to you Henny Pennny, if my heart and brain waves can reach that far...Terry

PS Keep us posted on the "Deer Hunter" and how his luck is running.

    1. Hey sweet Terry,

He did fool me. I thought something was wrong with him. Those leaves do make good compost and I have a couple of spots where I keep adding to the pile. I don't think Poppy is going to kill a deer this year. He didn't get a turkey back in the spring. Since his brother died, his heart has just not been into hunting We are both looking forward to a new year. Love you Terry. Henny

  3. Just found your blog. I know what you mean about the leaves and having no one to congratulate you on your endeavor of raking them. I rake all the leaves here at home and also down at the farm so am well acquainted with my rake.

I read a several of your earlier posts and your reminiscence about your home town struck a chord with me. I grew up in a small town in East Texas and it sounds much like yours. I don't have a good memory for details like you do so only have a hazy idea of the layout and what was where. But the feeling of things being right and and myself being well taken care of persist.

  5. Oh no, I don't have a blog. The book Leaves for the Raking was written by Henry Swain who coincidentally lives just about 20 miles east of here. Several years ago he wrote a column in our newspaper every couple of weeks ---- he sounds like a really interesting guy.
