How can I walk away...

when the teeny tiny garden is saying, wait, we're not done yet...

Poppy said just the other day, why don't you just let the garden go now, it's so hot and humid!

Well, I just can't.  The beans are a little bug eaten and the grass is trying to take over, but there are still vegetables to pick

why, we haven't had squash from the garden in two or three years because of those stinking squash bugs...but look now!

I gathered all the peppers one day last week and strung them up...just got to show you...

most all the peppers were green when picked but are now such pretty colors. Guess you can tell by the pantry shelf, I haven't done much canning this summer but have filled the freezer with bell peppers, stewed tomatoes, corn, and okra.

Want to show you too, a little hummingbird; an unusual hummingbird...

This little bird looks mostly black.  He seems to have a problem getting his beak down into the hole to drink. We put up another feeder; a saucer type which seems to work better for him.

At times I wonder if he can see...he lights on top of the feeder and tries to drink nectar from where there are no holes. Poor little fluffy fellow. Sure hope he will be strong enough to leave with the others when they start their long journey to southern Mexico.

Oh, while we're outside...remember the cutover? All that hundred acres of bare land across the path?? Well there are now some fantastic, big, beautiful, weeds growing along the path...

Crazy, I know! Most folks showing their beautiful flowers and here I am posting our giant weeds. There's just something pretty here. These weeds grow higher than my head!

and standing tall way over yonder is the lone pine tree the loggers left for Poppy to use when deer season comes in.  Oh gosh, and deer season is not far off. Bow hunting comes in next month, I think. Sure dread it, for the deer.

I will leave you, once again, with old sweet Smokey...waiting to come back in for another bowl of something to eat...

We hear it from Poppy all the time..."Mel, you're feeding Smokey too much"...

one of these days, something is going to get after him and he won't be able to climb a tree".

Sure appreciate your visit. Hope to be back real soon.

Love,
Henny

  1. I love seeing your garden bounty, it always impressed me.
Sweet Smokey, they do enjoy their treats😁
I'd rather look at your field full of weeds, than bare ground, lots of little critters hiding amongst those weeds.
    Summer is fleeting dear friend.
    Hugs,
    Jo

  2. That's an impressive haul of veggies. It'll be good eatin' in your house. Nice of you to try to accommodate the little
hummer, and let's hope he is a survivor. Don't let's talk about seasons changing no matter how much Poppy likes to
hunt. I'm not at all ready. Precious sends a purr to Smokey.

  3. Hasn't your garden just done wonderfully this year!!! I wouldn't be able to let things just go to waste either. Your pepper crop is amazing!
I hope someone will be able to identify that little Hummingbird. He looks so bedraggled.
Smokey, on the other hand, looks sleek and well fed.

  4. I am envious of your productive garden. Most of it is a failure, but we are getting tomatoes and peppers that are planted in a hot part of the yard.
So apparently the clear cut was not reforested? Those are some healthy weeds!

  5. I wouldn’t give up on that garden yet either. All the rain and heat have ended our tomatoes a couple weeks ago and we miss them but we did get some good ones at the farmers market Saturday. I think maybe the light is confusing us on the hummingbird that’s visiting you. It would be really rare to see anything other than a ruby throated in the Carolinas and the light band under its chin and the other one under its tail are characteristic of the ruby throat.

  6. That poor hummingbird looks pitiful. We lived in San Antonio for several years and had black chinned hummingbirds there. That one looks like one of those, but they're not supposed to be in N. Carolina. He looks like a storm could have blown him there, poor thing. Their Throats are actually bright purple when the sun hits them just right. Your garden sure has thrived this year. Congratulations! I know it takes a lot of time and work to get it all done as well as Mother Nature cooperating. And then there's work to preserve the food. Smokey looks so soft that he reminds me of a plush stuffed animal! He's a handsome fellow.

    1. Thank you Peg. Good to see you again. I did look up and read about the black chinned hummingbirds. This little one has a touch of red on its chin like the ruby throated. Maybe there is just a little something wrong with him, from birth?? Gardening is fun but when the vegetables start coming in is during the hottest months. :)

  8. Hi Henny...wow, your garden is very giving this year. I understand not being able to leave food on the vines. I'm like that, too. If I can't use it someone can. I just picked beans again today and the tomatoes are taking over the world.
I love your string of peppers. How cute is that.
And I too would rather look at weeds because most of them have some pretty blossoms. Hi Smokey, sweetie. I hope you didn't hear the fuss about your appetite. You are like me. My motto being...Eat whenever the opportunity presents itself. lol But...we foodies need a stationary bike for the winter so you'd better start shopping. Hugs to all xo.

  9. Before I forget, there has been some kind of sickness in song birds...here in Indiana they have requested that we take down all feeders. I haven't heard much about it lately...but I know it has been in other states. Part of the problem was with the eyes. So maybe it has that. You can look up songbird sickness and find out more details.

I tried potting two tomato plants this year...for the longest time all the tomatoes rotted but then they finally stopped. I had to buy pots, so that made these the most expensive tomatoes I have ever eaten. Yet it was worth it...and I can reuse them next year. Plus had the fun of watching them grown.

Love the peppers you strung up. We used to string green beans on strings and let them dry...we called the shuck beans and they had a totally different flavor. Sounds delicious right now.

  10. That is the prettiest string of peppers I've ever seen! I had trouble with squash / cucumber beetles as well for the past couple of years. They came this year, too but I diligently went out and squished as many as I could every day. It made a difference, but they were still there. I managed to get a few zucchini and some cucumbers, unlike last year. -Jenn

  16. Your garden is sure producing some amazing crops Henny Penny ... & I absolutely ADORE your peppers all strung up like that - just perfect ❤

  17. You have such treasures from your garden, I could not leave them either. Those peppers are beautiful and will sure make some nice seasoning for you. I've never seen a hummingbird like that one. I hope he is okay. Maybe you could put some of the sugar water in that top section of the feeder for him since he likes to land there. Smokey is so handsome and that fern is gorgeous! You and Poppy take care!

  18. Wow Henny those vegetables of yours are gorgeous! I'd say your teeny tiny garden is doing some amazing things! How wonderful! Aww...that little fluffy hummer is so cute...sure hope he figures out how to drink the nectar! I think that bare land area looks better with all the big weeds growing on it....looks like a jungle now! :) Watch out in case some lions or tigers come out of it! Well....maybe a tiger like Smokey! Always love your blog Henny...so many great pictures. Take good care!

    1. Thank you Diane. That's funny about the tall weeds, Smokey has scared me coming out from them. A few days ago the dogs barked like crazy looking out at the cutover. They could hear something that we couldn't. Then here comes Smokey out of the weeds carrying a baby rabbit in his mouth. Poppy went running out, Smokey dropped the bunny, Poppy picked it up; it was fine so we sent it back home.

    2. Ha Henny! Glad you guys saved the little rabbit that Smokey had. Bet Smokey loves that "jungle" now for hunting!

  19. Hello my friend! It's wonderful to visit with you again and see the bounty of your garden. It's still doing great isn't it? The squash looks wonderful to me. I can just imagine it with some butter and cinnamon and roasted for awhile. Yum!
That poor little bird looks a bit bedraggled doesn't he? I sure hope he survives the winter migration. I hope you and your sweet little Smokey have a great evening my friend.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

Goodness! Henny, the food up top there
is amazing looking, the colour is amazing
to..why does'nt the fruit and veg in the
    supermarket look like that..Lovely!

Humming birds are amazing, are'nt they...
And the highest recorded wingbeats for wild
    hummingbirds during hovering is 88/sec...
Typical lifespan is probably 3 to 5 year...
I was thinking..after a great life in North
America..why would you want to go to Mexico?

    Smokey! Your a diamond..AND..what a poser!
HeHe! And l should know..! :). You look great!x

    1. Thank you Willie. Always glad to see your comment. That's true! Why would they want to go to Mexico? :) I love the little row of vegetables at the end of your comment. Wish I knew how to do things like that with the computer. Sure could use a few lessons, but my daughters stay so busy.

  23. Oh my-Smokey is so beautiful! I bet he feels like velvet-his coat is so healthy looking. I'm envious of your eggplant-I had a beautiful plant-but it never had one blossom! So I yanked it the other day. I always love seeing the produce from people's gardens. I hope you are feeling well.

  24. Those peppers looks beautiful all strung up and drying. As my Mama used to say about people, "One should be useful as well as ornamental". That goes for peppers as well.

  25. Those colorful peppers make your pantry look so pretty. Walk away… there’s no way when there’s something fresh to eat. I also love the wild beauty of the overgrown field.

  26. Your vegetables are just beautiful. The eggplant is magnificent. I don't see how you can possibly walk away. Nature abhors a vacuum and if there is bare land, something will grow. Those giant wees will probably provide a lot of seeds for the birds. Discovered there is quite a difference in a jalapeno pepper picked second before it is cooked and one in the produce case the market.

  31. Your posts show your sweet heart! I am amazed by that hummingbird. I do not recognize it. Maybe it is a rare mutation? Reminds me of Ravoli's Hummingbird but so much darker. Thank you so much for feeding her or him with the saucer that is easier for it to use.

  32. Wonderful harvest from your garden ... you have filled a fine storage shelf. I am now harvesting red and yellow tomatoes and many herbs.
The little hummingbird is cute. Have a good day.
Many greetings from Viola ... dance with D. O'Donnell - The Rock 'n' Roll Show :-))) ... and (yes Ireland is beautiful too - I was there in Kerry for some time two years ago :-)) Hug

  35. What a lovely harvest you have! The green peppers that I bought at a nursery turned out to be jalapeno peppers! We are not fans of hot spicy food so I will gift them to a friend who loves to eat them raw. He have a dark, fluffly hummer that visits our feeder occasionally, he's very handsome. When we were growing up we had a grey cat that looked just like yours, her name was Muffin. Have a good weekend.
