A little Titmouse

Titmouse. Is that a pot of sunflower seeds?
This morning I finished picking up all the tree limbs from off the dam, then added them to the natural fence. It was a job.

yep, and a few shelled peanuts too!
It's cold and cloudy again this morning. I don't remember ever in my life having this much rain and this many cloudy days for months on end.

Got one!
Why the hens have gone on strike and totally stopped laying, and I don't blame them. Like me, they need a little sunshine in their lives.

The hen house is damp and cold, even with eight to ten inches of wheat straw and soft hay covering the dirt floor, and it's dark and gloomy inside. Wet and muddy outside.

Is all this mine?
Funny how you don't notice the cold when you're working outside, but when you come in, you can't get warm. Chilled to the bone.

It is now 3:35 and still no sun. The weatherman was wrong! Oh from the window here at the desk, I can see two small holes in the clouds with a little blue showing through.

My Grandma Thomas used to say, "it won't rain as long as there is enough blue in the sky to make a cat a pair of breeches".

Picket line - no more eggs until we get some sun!

and the sun finally broke through the clouds late today.

  1. A sweet little bird enjoying your garden, and OH, the hens came out to catch a bit of sun.

  2. A long rainy steak can be very depressing. We need moisture but not that much.

  3. I love the picture of the hens on brush pile. I'm glad the sun finally came out and I hope it shines again tomorrow. Days and days of rain can be such a downer.

  4. Yes too many gloomy days can be a bit depressing Henny. Love your Grannys saying ... made me smile to think of cats in breeches. Hope you get some sun & some blue skies soon dear Henny.

  6. I love the little Tufted Titmouse slowly moving over to see what was in the pot! Your picture of the hens' picket line is so funny. Those little ladies just don't want to get their feet wet! You will have to show us a picture of your natural fence sometime. I bet it is really coming along. I never heard your Grandma's saying about rain - that is a new one to me. Well, we still have a lot of snow here and some people still don't have power. And they are forecasting more snow this weekend! I hope Poppy's daughter and her family have done ok with all the snow. I know where she lives - in fact we have driven through that town. We live in a little town just east of Kansas City. Take care Henny and don't you work too hard!

  7. Oh, I do hope the sun came out to warm you up. Such sweet photos of your little titmouse.

  8. Well..I'm ashamed to admit it..what with my
top qualifications in Zoology, Botany and
Psychology..HeHe! I was actually looking for
    a ...'mouse'...Think l must be loosing it...
So..Good old Google...A Tufted Titmouse has
just about everything you could ask for in a
backyard bird. Petite and strikingly elegant,
it's as perky as a chickadee. In fact, it's a
cousin to the chickadee. ... And “mouse,” from
a word applied to any small bird, as well as that
little rodent....So there we have it..I've learnt
    summat to~day, or rather re~learnt summat to~day...
    Amen! 😉 😃

Oh! There is summat l do know about Hens not laying..
At 15-18 months of age, and every year thereafter,
chickens will replace their feathers. Feathers will
fall out to make room for new feather growth. During
this time, hens will stop laying eggs....
Hens may lay fewer eggs due to light, stress, poor nutrition,
molt or age. Some of these reasons are natural responses, while
others can be fixed with simple changes and egg laying can return
    to normal...
So Henny..Can l suggest you install Cable TV in there hen house,
and cheer them up a bit...Can l suggest the film/DVD of the film
'Chicken Run' they will love that..Probably give them 'shell' shock,
and get them laying again..Cluck! Cluck! :0).

  9. Your little titmouse is adorable and definitely knows where his free meal is. I felt so sorry for you and your chickens having some much wet, cold and dark skies, then felt the joy when the sun came out in the last photo. Hope your chicks will soon be laying you some wonderful eggs.

May you have some more sunny days to warm your body and your heart. At 6:03 this morning it was 51 and real feel was 45.

Have a very good day today ~ FlowerLady

  10. I've been wanting to buy a new feeder so the birds can be fed this winter. I just haven't had a vehicle to go buy one yet. Love the last photo with the hens. Cute.

  11. It's gloomy and damp here too, Henny, and we are in for some brutal winter weather this weekend. I have a cord of wood coming on Friday, and my daughter and I will spend Saturday morning stacking it, hopefully getting it all done before the storm hits!

  12. We have sunshine but it's too cold for me.
The chickens are so cute and the titmouse is very handsome!

  13. Amazingly we have 6 hens and all 6 are now laying. We have had rain for the past 3 days I will take some photos to share how it is laying in the garden, even the soak away is flooding.

  14. We have had the same stuff. No sun for days and days. Dark sky during the middle of the day, very strange! And rain!! Still no snow here in Wisconsin!
I love Titmouse, we have them here too and this year they are staying during the winter months. We have four that come to the feeder.

  15. Still no sun here. I'm like that about the cold when I work too and also when I walk.
I'm looking forward to being able to continue work on my natural fence too.

  16. the picket line! xx

  17. I love titmouse birds they are so interesting. I am so ready for sun. I do believe it is fixing to stay cold for a while now and rain to. I guess it is better than snow. Poor little chickens wanting some sun. Hope you are doing well. Love you bunches.

  18. That damp cold certainly does get right inside of you! Poor chickens - I like their picket line.
    I think titmouse's are cute.

  19. My grandma used to say the sky would clear up if there was enough blue to sew a Dutchman’s britches. I have no idea where she got that! It’s been so gloomy for months here, too, but yesterday the sun was out and we dropped everything and went to the beach for hours just to soak up some light. I hope you get some this week, too. I love the photo of the hens on strike in the gloom! Don’t blame them a bit.

  20. LOL at your grandma's saying. I always heard it as a sailor's pants. Poor chickens. I don't like these dreary, dreary days either...and on top of that it is bone-chilling cold here. xo Diana

  21. January and February are our coldest months . . . It's cloudy here and freezing rain. A good day to stay inside. I realize that you don't have that option with animals to feed and care for each day. Here's wishing you a warm and sunshiny day tomorrow and a warm crackling fire in the fireplace.
Don't work too hard, sweet friend.
    God bless you,
    Connie :)

  22. I usually prefer dreary cloudy but enough of this. I can't seem to stay out of the rain and completely get over the creeping crud.sniff cough

  23. So many friends have told me that their hens stopped laying this winter. Not many farm eggs out there! I have 4 spring hens who are still laying because they're so young. Yes, too too much rain! Goodness, we could use a good drying-out! Good for you, getting out and doing some work. I need to do the same today. Sunday will bring cold again.

  24. Gloomy no sun days were our weather before Christmas. It is below zero here now and today no sun here either but no mud either. Hope you have a sunny day soon!

  25. I used to keep a light burning in my hen house, which seemed to help the egg production. But not always.

  26. Chickens! They are so entertaining. It's been a tough year for them all with so much rain. Hopefully better weather is on it's way soon!

  27. I would march with the chickens! It has been over a week since we have seen a bit of sun...I need just a few minutes of sun and have no idea when that will come.

  28. Just went and looked at the weather forecast and they are saying sun tomorrow!!! Hooray!

  29. It was a cold here too ..but the sun certainly does lift ones spirit ... Hopefully tomorrow....Hugs
