Back here in the woods

Friends, the older I get the faster time passes, and there's more to be done lately than one can possibly do! It's like fighting fire with gasoline. :)

Take the last few days. There's not been one minute to get on the computer since my last post.

Well, I could have skipped watching "The Virginian" last night. But, seriously...

about the time I get started on the housework, and I do start on something the minute my feet hit the floor every morning, Poppy says, you want to work on the path today...well yes!!

So we work outside, then come dragging in the house, thinking it's probably lunch time and see that it's actually 1:00 pm...we eat a little lunch and Poppy settles down in his chair to rest and watch a little "Gunsmoke", as he puts it...

While I, with two cats weaving in and out my feet, stand and stare at the dishes in the sink, the two piles of dirty laundry, carpet that needs vacuuming, litter box to clean, kitchen floor to sweep and mop, oh, and I had planned to clean the bathrooms, and dust these filthy ceiling fans that are beginning to look like the swings at the state fair!

and speaking of my last post...I truly meant to reply to your nice comments, then go on and read your latest posts...what the heck goes with my time anyhow??

so this post is thanking you and replying to a couple of things...

especially thanking you all for telling me to keep mama's little Kenmore sewing machine. How could I have even thought of putting it on Craigslist! Just got to find a little spot to squeeze it back into the teeny tiny sewing room.

AND! the sweet names suggested for my baby. I love them all, but just had to pick the name "Hattie" suggested by Jo.

"Hattie"

Pilar, my middle name is Loraine. It seems more a Southern thing to call daughters by their first and middle names, like Shelby Jean. I have cousins called Betty Lee, Annie Ruth, and Joyce Ann. My middle name is Loraine. Mama and daddy never called me Melba Loraine, just Melba. Too much I guess.

Aw, how bout "Hattie Mae" nah, just "Hattie"

and Connie, couldn't you simply spend the day looking at fabric? I've never bought fabric from Hancock's, but have ordered fabric on line from Marshall's Dry Goods. I'll check out Hancock's.

Rian, your comment made me think about driving mama's plain little 1998 Toyota Corolla for years. That little car didn't have so much as a clock. Mama used to say, "oh, that little car didn't come with anything but a set of seats".  Then we sold the car and bought a new Nissan Rogue. Felt like sitting in the cockpit of an aircraft.  But I've adjusted and love it, and feel sure I will love the new Singer too. In fact, I finished an apron just last night using the new machine.

It was interesting to read what brand of sewing machine you all use. The little Kenmore was mentioned several times. Thank you for your comments, and your friendship.

Have I talked your ears off. Wondering if I should actually publish this?? You will come back, won't you?

Love,
Henny

  1. Aww Henny, I'm tickled pink that you liked my suggestion and named your dolly Hattie, I think that is such a sweet down-to-earth. old-fashioned name, if you see fit to add a middle name then even more special :)
You and Poppy have been working hard, but that isn't anything new is it...lol
I've been "mucking out" myself this past two weeks, making my grandchildren's bedroom, that I'd been storing the homes' excess in these last ten years or so since they have long since grown, a cozy place for my new great-granddaughter on the days she visits with us.
It's like putting the toothpaste back in the tube, where the heck does all the stuff come from ?
I'm happy to read you are keeping your mama's sewing machine...it doesn't take up much space, and ooh, those memories of her hands touching those parts, and now you doing the same.....priceless.
    Be well dear ones !
    Hugs,
    ~Jo

  2. Coming here is like sitting down and chatting with an old friend, Henny. Hattie is the perfect name for that Southern baby doll!
I always called both my girls and my youngest son by their first and middle name -til they were grown and gone. People used to ask me if were from the south! lol
I am glad you decided to keep your Mama's machine. You would regret selling it later, I know.
Your hubby sounds like mine. Why help inside when "the wife' can take care of it. The family joke...why are mom's feet shorter than dads? So she can get closer to the sink...and Why doesn't mom need a watch? Because there is a clock on the back of the stove...and there you have it!
Have a wonderful night- we are fighting a deep freeze here. xo Diana

  4. I know what you mean about the time going by so fast. I feel the same way.
Hatty is a great name for the baby doll.
    Beautiful picture.
Looking forward to be able to get back outside to work on my fence and trails.

  5. I know what you mean when you talk about so much to do! It always gets me when the men come in and sit down to rest and we still have a full days work to do! When you retire it just means you get to let go of one job - you still have all the others! Ha! I'm so happy to hear you are keeping your Kenmore. Seriously, it is good to have a back up machine especially as much as you sew. Hattie is a perfect name for your baby!

  6. Hi Henny. Sounds very busy there with lots of chores to do. I half expected to see your Farm covered in snow as to-nights TV Bulletin mentioned the 'White-Out' there in the USA. Our friends are going to Chicago tomorrow into minus 25Deg C..Brrrrr! We're getting temps here of 40Deg C (100Deg F)...this evening there has been a Southerly Change and the temperature has dropped to around 22Deg C at 9:30pm. If it is cool tomorrow I may begin my miniature Sculpting Project in my Workshop- here is hoping. Best Wishes. KEV. (AUSTRALIA).

  7. Nana Diana up there is stealing ALL my material..
HeHe! I'll have to think of a few housewives jokes..! :).

Firstly! I love the photo up top there..that is a bit special,
AND! AND! I'm still looking for a torso in the water...HeHe!
Swamp Murders..! Though..l'm glued to the TV every afternoon,
at 2:00 o'clock for a couple of hours, watching repeats of
Bizarre Foods America with Andrew Zimmern..I love that program..
The unusual foods are unusual..amazing..my kind of thing, as my
friends will tell you.."That Willie, if it stands still long
enough, he'll eat it". HeHe! True! True! 😊

Hattie..Not to keen, reminds me of Hattie Jaques..God! She was
fat...Don't matter where you were in the room, you were sat
next to her...! HeHe! Bless! 😉

    So..Housewife Stories...
A woman was telling her friend , "It was I who made my husband
a millionaire." "And what was he before you married him?" asked
the friend. The woman replied, "A multi-millionaire"...

A wife got so mad at her husband she packed his bags
and told him to get out.
As he walked to the door she yelled, "I hope you die
a long, slow, painful death." He turned around and said,
"So, you want me to stay?"...

The man approached the very beautiful woman in the large
supermarket and asked, “You know, I’ve lost my wife here
in the supermarket. Can you talk to me for a couple of minutes?”
“Why?” “Because every time I talk to a beautiful woman my wife
    appears out of nowhere.”...
    (sorry best l can do)..

Well.."There it is"..all behind to~day, switched PC on first thing,
the cursor was on strike..text my friend Richard..he suggested unlugging
at the mains for 10mins, when l got home plugged it back in..Whey~Hey!
    Up and running..and l did'nt even curse..!!! :o).

  8. My husbands grandmother's name was Hattie. I always thought that was so cute. My mom was a seamstress. She used to sew most of our clothes growing up. She had a few sewing machines but it was the Singer that was her favorite.

  9. This was delightful and comforting to read! I'm exactly the SAME WAY about my housework. Sigh!! I do have plans to do various things, cleaning things, but they get put off and put off. And if the day is nice outside, how much happier it is to be hauling branches around or moving dirt! And if it's too cold, I'd much rather be painting or weaving, if I'm inside. And we both nap while saying we're watching this show or listening to that podcast, too :) It's good to know we're in good company! Yes, glad you're keeping the little sewing machine. It may come in handy someday, even if just to give to a granddaughter.

  10. Wonderful post, Miss Melba Lorraine! I think I'd call you by both names, even if it is a long one, because it's a nice southern tradition. Baby Hattie-- it's perfect. The list of chores you need doing is so so long! My guess is that the outdoor chores on your property and with the animals is what takes up all your time, otherwise you'd have enough time in the day to get the mundane tasks done and have a little over for more creative pursuits. But Henny, don't stress over responding to blog comments! I'm pretty sure we'd wait for you no matter what. Bless you!

  11. You sound like me, Melba, not knowing how time flies by so quickly. I am so glad that Poppy is helping you clear the path. Take good care of yourself, my friend. xx

  12. Ah Henny I get it about time...it just flies and when hubby has a project everything I want to do gets put on hold. Take care friend...love Hattie. Hugs!

  13. I know just how you feel, that list gets longer by the minute. I do the essential and then go as far down the list as possible. We didn't see lunch today, too busy sorting out water and food for the birds. I have earmarked some sewing time for tomorrow and if something has to slip. well it will come round again.

  14. Time is flying by at the moment. I thought I would be looking for something to do with not wanting to go out but my how quickly time has gone and I don't seem to have achieved very much at all. What a beautiful name you chose.

  15. You know we always come back!! I love hearing what's going on in the teeny tiny farm - no snow there, Henny?

  16. I dont' think I've ever met a Hattie.

  17. I think Hattie is perfect! And she is cute as can be!

  18. Hatti is the perfect name...and Mae goes real well with that. My time slips away from me, too. It seems I always have dishes to do and clothes to wash. I tell Roger when I die, I will leave a pile of clothes to do.

  19. Seems as though at your house a woman's work is never done. You are a busy one.

  20. I think if one has a house and a yard there is always SOMETHING that needs doing. And shortly after you've done it it will need to be done again. I guess that's the way it is and we might as well accept it.

I love Hattie for your new baby's name. Delightfully old-fashioned.

  21. Hattie is the perfect name, and that is so true about southern names. Good thing we don't live in Russia, where they frequently address one another by full names!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Since she is a southern baby, I think Hattie Mae has a nice ring! Always something to do, never enough time, or maybe enough enthusiasm ;-) Reading your blog always makes me chuckle. My sewing machines are Janomes. I have a few, lol. I have a few backups for the backups, which I should really sell, but as usual I can't pass up a good deal, (garage sales or thrift stores) so a few sewing machines have accumulated. I gave a Kenmore to Meredith, and will give one to David and Melissa.

  23. Melba, I grew up in Calif, but guess I have a southern name because I heard Sharon Kaye every time I did something bad! As for Poppy being finished when you come in and you just getting started...reminded me of this saying:
A man may work from sun to sun, but a woman's work is never done!
