Our living room sure gets lived in!!

Did you know that Eli is trying to take my place on the couch? Well, he is. The big fat chair belongs to Eli. To sit for a minute and put my feet up on the coffee table, I now have to beg and plead. This sweetie pie can be stubborn as a mule. I just don't like sitting in the middle of the couch!

This big dog is an angel, but still, the wear and tear on this small house and especially on the living room furniture is unbelievable! Looks like we've kept a horse in the house.

Speaking of the couch...

Several, and I do mean several, years ago, Lynn gave me two beautiful pillows for our big leather couch. These pillows are now ragged, worn out, and dirty, filthy dirty! I have taken them apart, washed, and re-stuffed them. I have patched holes and stitched up rips. Seriously, the time has come to let them go.

Plundering through my stash of fabrics, I found a piece similar to the old pillows. Friends, I went to work trying to sew two pillow to look like the old ones.

Actually, the new pillow turned out much better than I expected. Making the ruffle from the heavy fabric was the hardest part. Still have to finish the second one.

What an improvement! I'm not that crazy about the purple in the new fabric but I can live with it. I'm just tickled that we will have two nice clean sturdy fabric pillows!

Cousin Pat has sent me another surprise package. She is good at that, you know.

Lots of vintage, doilies or scarves. Are these called doilies? What were all these tiny doilies used for? Does anyone know?
Pat sent these things for me to cut up and use for doll making. It would be hard to cut these pretty things.

and a teeny tiny pocket that measures 2"x 2", embroidered with a rooster.
I do so appreciate these things. Thank you, Patty!

Our weather this morning!! It is windy, pouring rain, temperature 59 degrees. This is supposed to continue on through the weekend. We should all be down right depressed by then! I'm fixing to bundle up and run to the grocery store for a few things.

Hope to be back soon. I appreciate your visit.

Love,
Henny

    1. Yes, we should have covered our furniture. There is no hope of replacing anything right now!

  3. Miss Henny!!! I read this post (and your pillows are gorgeous, by the way) and then scrolled back just in case I missed an earlier one.
Apparently, I had, since, oh my goodness! There was my book and all the nice things you had to say.
Thank you, friend. I'm so glad that I joined this blogging world. It is so full of kind and generous people.

  4. Lovely linen, it will make your dolls extra special. I have the same problem with Ben, he is tint compared to Eli but likes the best spot on the sofa and as many pillows as he can heap up. Your new pillow looks good, I did not notice the purple till you mentioned it.

  5. Your new pillows are beautiful. I love the combination of pink and purple, and they're both subdued, not shocking bright colors. My mom crocheted lots of doilies and dresser scarves. There was a doily under every table lamp and a big one on every table that didn't have a lamp so things wouldn't scratch the wood, I guess. She always had a big clear glass ashtray by her chair sitting on a doily. No one in the house smoked, but she used it for 'stuff'. She'd put a pencil in it for her crossword puzzles, her thimble, small scissors, or whatever she might want to keep at hand. I have piles of those doilies. She had some that she used on the headrest part of a chair and on the arms of upholstered chairs and the sofa so the furniture didn't get so dirty. Sometimes she used colored thread with the white and made flowers as part of the pattern. I have one with beautiful red and yellow flowers crocheted into it. I have a couple that are probably 18" across that I use on my end tables with table lamps centered on them. I love them; can you tell? As for Eli, you've just got to be firm with him like you were with your girls growing up. He'll get over it. : )

    1. Peg, I like the idea of a big clear ashtray and every now and then see a pretty one in a thrift store. That would be a good place for reading glasses too. And I have plenty of doilies to sit one on. :) I can remember my grandma and older aunts putting special scarfs on the living room furniture, a set of three matching scarves. I still use the old embroidered dresser scarves too. I might find a place to use these things and not cut any. Thank you!

  8. Yes the GP's put the wear and tear on a house. Yep stubborn to the hilt they are... But they give so much love that you just over look all that ;O). Don't we :O)... We are having a nice cool down here but we are not getting any rain. I so wish we were. We need it bad. Pretty new pillows! I keep threatening to get some stuff made for here. I have fabric for several house projects but I can't find the time to do it. LOL to busy making window treatments for other people LOL... I will get to mine eventually! :O)

    1. Poppy and I say the same thing about Eli. You can't get mad at him. Even when he is stubborn he is sweet and lovable. I can't help but laugh and kiss him on the nose. It was dry here but now we are in week two of rain. Hope you get some rain soon.

  9. Love the "new" pillows. I try to use everything to the point of no return and then I will use it some more! Especially, if someone dear, gave it to me! I can sympathize with you about having to beg for a place on the couch. I don't have a lot of trouble with my chair because it really isn't that comfy but my LuLuBelle will actually come and "tell" me when she wants the couch or chair someone is sitting in. I'm not kidding. She will bug me until I go see what she wants and then she will stare at the person who is sitting where she wants to be. LoL

    Grace & Peace

    1. Me too. I have really enjoyed those pillows. I'm not sure I've see LuLuBelle. That is a cute name. I'll have to look for her. She sounds sweet and special.

  10. Oooh - the rooster pocket - I think I know what that is! It's to put on the foot of your wine glass or goblet to catch any of the drips from condensation! Never heard tell of such a thing until recently, had dinner with a lovely lady who is really into all things Victorian. We all had little "doilies" on our goblets.

  11. Hi Henny Penny, Just love that big ole white dog! Who cares if the furniture gets used! Our dog gets on ours too. At least she is small enough we can sit and have her get on our laps. Lots of nice doilies. How do you get so much done! Like the new pillows too. Nancy

    1. Thank you. I agree about the furniture. We absolutely use and enjoy what little we have. Life is too short to worry about a piece of furniture getting messed us. I do miss my little Pooh sitting in my lap. You should see Eli when I say, sit in my lap. He tries, and I get so tickled. I'll get Poppy to take a picture.

    2. Hello Henny,
It has been a long while since I stopped in. I have read several of your posts and laughed out loud and mused over all of them.
Your Eli is a beautiful creature.
About the doilies, yes to the rooster pocket and also protecting the furniture from people's head and arms directly touching the furniture. These were also considered to be a sign to a potential suitor that some one in the household possessed virtue of domestic skills. It is understood that all sorts of things could be projected into this display of skill, patience, persistence, etc.
You can use starch to stiffen doilies and fashion them into angels and lace bowls and all manner of things. As per Lynn, you can cut a piece of the doily and applique it onto something else. I also like the idea of stitching several of them together end to end, in a purposefully spontaneous manner to form a runner for the center of the table.
      Take extra good care,
      Jen

  12. Your new pillow is so pretty as are your linens. In the sixth picture are those napkins, do you think? Or hankies? I remember my mother making sure I had a clean hankie to take to school every morning. Just for fun I've started collecting them now whenever I find one and I plan on using them too!

    1. Thank you. I think these are ladies hankies. I have few that I've collected too. I should pull out all the old linens from mama's cedar chest and write a post about them. I like using the old things.
