Back to Work

Poppy went back to work this morning after taking the week off to deer hunt.  Bow season came in and Poppy had a new crossbow to try out.  Fact is, he didn't kill a deer.  He didn't really see that many deer.   He waits patiently for that trophy buck to come sneaking in.   While down at his brother Joe's, better known as "Riverjoe", a large doe with a fawn walked up to their stand but neither of them wanted to shoot her.  My hat goes off to them!!!   We need more hunters with good hearts...especially up in this neck of the woods!!!

You have heard it from me before, but we do not, I repeat, do not,  need another deer head or turkey tail on the wall...If Poppy never kills another turkey or deer, he has plenty to show for his efforts over the past years!!  Running out of space in the living room, two of the deer mounts have been moved into the bedroom...one over each side of the bed!!!  We wake up every morning to a couple of bucks looking down at us.   Nothing feminine about this house!!!  Just kidding!  But now you see why I so enjoy my little dining area and the sewing room.  Every woman has to have a little lace and ruffles, bonnets and dolls!! :)

I was never too much involved in Poppy's bottle collecting, but together we have quite the collection of arrowheads.  Back when we were dating we loved to look for arrowheads and we had our special secret places to look...dirt roads, especially after a hard rain, and tobacco fields after they were plowed.   On Sunday afternoons, Poppy and I, both dressed in our Indian boots and suede coats with long fringe, would take his Jeep and go out looking for arrowheads.

Just a few of the arrowheads displayed in cases...

If you are ever lucky enough to find an arrowhead, you get the fever...it is so exciting thinking about how many years ago an Indian sat and chipped that arrowhead from rock and then used it for hunting, or for protection.  Arrowheads can be found almost anywhere.  It has been many years since Poppy and I actually went out arrowhead hunting, but Poppy found one in Joe's front yard just last week.

Thank you for looking at my blog.  Hope to be back soon, and hope you will be back to visit too. :)

Love,
Henny Penny

  1. Dear Henny,
The arrowheads in glass frames are just stunning. It's extra fun to know you and Poppy combed the earth for them together in yonder sunlit days, while wearing the fringed boots.

All the wildlife and gaming accessories look just perfect in your cozy cabin.

My friend's brother has a stuffed wild boar in their cabin. Fierce, I tell you, fierce! I think he could be strategically placed en route to the kitchen to block late-night consumption of snacks. Haha! Seriously, he'd stop me straight away in my tracks.
One time before my brother got married, we were dining at a famous eatery with all sorts of wild life on the walls. It was about dusk, and the air conditioner had just kicked on. Something was floating down in the air just over our table.....it was....wait for it......moose lips! Aaaarhrhrhghghg. I kid you not. We've been known to still laugh about that on occasion.

A little bird from the birdsong cottage let it be known you had a birthday. Happy, happy birthday dear Melba. I hope it was your best ever! Many returns of the day! (:^)

    Love,
    Jen

  2. Dear Jen,

So glad to hear from you. After the post about hunting I was afraid nobody would ever visit again!! Moose lips!!! That's unbelievable!! I'll bet your meal was free after that happening!!

  3. Dear Henny,
I'm so glad you were able to get away for a special time on your birthday. Those are the times we need to tuck into our hearts and pull out again to visit on days that need a bit of brightening.

There is something so very special about time spent with those we love who know us so well. It is restorative to the soul. Helps us remember our authentic selves.

Do you know that song, 'Sisters'? Sisters, sisters, there will never be two closer sisters....etc. I remember watching it on the Lawrence Welk show with Grammy when I was a kid.

    Love and goodnight,
    Jen

  4. Dear Henny Penn: Happy Birthday, belatedly! I know you enjoyed it!

Any how, wow, what a collection of all things country! You win the prize, I will have to come visit and we can draw straws to see who will dust the bottle collection ... no seriously, it is a beautiful collection of times spent a'courtin' and those arrowheads will always be so special, I can't even imagine the time our Indian ancestors spent carving those out.

I think this year in WNC we may have a bigger bear population than deer, they are everywhere here. They are so hungry and us humans have taken over their happy eating grounds so they are foraging everywhere. I don't know any hunters any more since I live in town now, but I think some have been shot in town.

Any way, once again, Happy Birthday! You should post a picture of you and your daughters so we can see all you beauties together. Once again, I think your home is awesome and I know it takes work to keep it looking so great... Love You... Terry

    1. Dear Terry,

Thank you for the birthday wish! It was fun spending the day with Lynn and Andee. I am very self-conscious and ruin every picture I am in by making weird faces, seriously...especially since I am old!! But let me look around...Maybe I could cut my head out of one :)!

Have you seen a bear up close?? Once in a while a deer will scare me but I would probably faint at the sight of a live bear!! I feel sorry for all the wildlife. You can't drive around here without getting behind a logging truck hauling a load of big beautiful trees!!

Funny you mentioned dusting those darn bottles...it drives me crazy. I keep telling Poppy it's his turn to bring in the ladder and dust, and he says "I don't see any dust"!

      Love,
      Henny

  5. Dear Henny Penn - I know you cannot take a bad picture and you are not old! My mother is 76 years old and I don't consider her old. Old is when you can't move, can't complain and don't enjoy life anymore!

Any way, the thing about dusting the bottle collection... I have a friend who is 88 years young and I went over to clean house for her and she has about 300 dog statues and they looked they had never been dusted so I went and washed and polished her shelves and dogs, so I have a new found respect for people who have collections that are dust-free -- in other words, ain't gonna happen at my house. Ha ha - Love & Hugs to you! Terry
