Thinking of the Farm

Okay, there were going to be no more vegetable pictures from the teeny tiny garden. Not this year anyway. But then I went to the garden to pull a handful of grass for Bun Bun, (what better place to find grass than in the garden), and there it was...this pretty bright orange bell pepper. How could I not take a take a picture for my blog? I need to stop admiring this pepper and eat it!

I remember back one summer between the years of 1957 and 1960, we had moved from town to the country...I've posted before about "Daddy's farm". Anyway we had a garden near the house. Later on the garden was moved to a field down the road. Mama and daddy were going to the beach for a week and daddy told mama that she needed to fertilize the garden before they left. Mama got the bag of fertilizer from the garage and lugged it to the garden and put it around the plants. Some time later during a conversation daddy asked mama where she had put that opened bag of fertilizer. Mama said, there was none left in the bag. What! None left! You put that whole bag on the garden! Oh Hell, you might as well forget about having a garden! Everything will be burnt up by the time we get home! Well when they got home from the beach, mama was very thankful. The garden was not burnt up. The garden plants were huge, lush and green, and hanging full of vegetables that needed to be picked.

Moving to the country could have been the best of times, but not so. It  was 1957 and the best years of our lives were coming to an end...too many changes, too many bad times.

Wish I had pictures of our farm, the house, the pastures, the ponds, the fields...but I don't. This is all I could find...

Yep, that's me with Randall, my youngest brother in front of our house...

and here's Mama, Jackie, and Randall on the front steps. If mama could see this old picture she would say something like, "oh good Lord, don't put that old picture of me in those sunglasses on the computer"!

and not long thereafter I joined the Air Force and left home for San Antonio, Texas. That's where I met my future husband, Lynn and Andee's Dad...

Well I've strayed far from my post about the orange bell pepper. Sorry about that.

Thank you for visiting.

Gloomy Sunday, Rainy Monday

All day long it has looked like rain, but none yet. This has been a quiet gloomy sort of Sunday. Cloudy with a little breeze blowing. Anyhow, I have piddled around wasting time, doing nothing much of anything.

I picked up an old picture album and turned through the pages, pulling out two special pictures that made me smile. Both are pictures of Poppy and our Granddaughter Madison. Madison is sixteen now and driving. But back then whatever Poppy was talking about sure had her attention...

A few years later down at the pond trying to catch a fish. Those little legs! Now she swims and works as a lifeguard during the summer months...

Good Monday morning! We woke up at 4:30 this morning to the sound rain...a much needed rain. What a good morning this would have been to roll over and go back to sleep, but not so. Poppy had to be at work at 6:00.

On my way up the path yesterday, heading toward town, I noticed the Goldenrods beginning to open. Lots of Goldenrods. I was worried they had been trampled down or mowed over.

Even on a gloomy day these bright yellow flowers bring a little sunshine...

and Black-eyed Susans...

A vase of these flowers on the front porch makes me happy. Looks like the rain is here for a couple of day so picking flowers will have to wait.

Okay, time to get busy. With it wet and raining, I have no excuse for not getting the dust wiped off everything inside this house. Yuk! I'd rather plow a field!

Thank you for visiting.

Last of the Beans

I got smart this morning and went to the garden early. Although ugly with bug bites, here is the last of the beans. If I pick through these carefully, I might get one more potful to cook. Lots of these will need to be shelled...

I made darn sure there will be no more beans to worry about picking by pulling up the vines as  I picked...

Eli went with me to the garden and played inside the fence whilst I picked and pulled. I didn't think about how bean leaves cling to clothing...you can imagine how Eli looked underneath...

I called in Henny Penny and Cocky Locky to to get some of the bugs that have been eating the beans. (Actually this is Big Boy and Pest)

Bickett and Dumperoo were ready and waiting to come in from the porch...

Finishing up here. I left for a while and got those beans ready to cook, in fact they are on the stove now. Just as I thought there were lots of shelly beans...

Here it is 3:20 in the afternoon and I still need to vacuum and sweep the kitchen. Better get busy. Again, thank you for visiting. Oh, and I promise, this is my last picture of beans cooking on the stove. :)

A little complaining

It is so terribly hot and humid today.  Now, in September, we are having that North Carolina August weather! There's work I want to do outside but good grief! The heat and humidity simply wears me out!

This Chocolate vine needs trimming. It is actually causing the arbor to lean toward the goat lot. I need to root some cuttings. I've set out a small cutting on the left side to even things out. If it grows like the vine on the right side we may need a new arbor...

The little greenhouse needs washing. I want to fill in the open space under the shed with bricks to keep the ducks out. The grass in the garden needs to be pulled so that I can make a row or two for collards and turnips. Not that I can grow collards and turnips but I want to try again.

The weeds and that crazy bamboo grass seem to be taking over everything. That old chair that Cousin Pat gave me...I never did get anything to grow there. Where did spring go anyway? There were so many thing I wanted to do in the yard. Oh well, maybe I'll be around to enjoy another spring.

My list of things to do outside goes on and on. But the heat! Beginning Sunday, according to the weather report, we are supposed to have a few cooler days. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Bun Bun is still hitching a ride to the dog lot these hot days. It is much cooler there than in his bunny cage. He's a funny bunny!

Eli was proud of this stick he picked up in the yard. What a mess he had...bark peeled off on the floor and see his dirty legs...

Need to get busy. Poppy is home from work and will probably want to get on the computer. He has started selling his big collection of racing memorabilia on Ebay. Thank you for stopping by.

Critters

We really need rain now. Again last night we had lots of lightening and thunder but no rain. Now at 2:45 in the afternoon the sky is getting dark and I can hear thunder...maybe rain will come with this storm.

It won't be long before the humming birds will be moving on. It's a job keeping fresh sugar water in their feeder but worth the trouble. These little birds are fun to watch...

How boring life would be without animals. Look who's sleeping side by side now, and getting this white bedspread really dirty. Looks like Eli had just come in from playing with the goats. This bedspread got washed again yesterday...

And who's sharing a bowl of Puppy Chow...

As Poppy always says, "don't start anything and there won't be anything"...

Maybe I'll just play in the water...

Some days there is just not a lot to post. Thank you for visiting. Hope to be back soon.

The Guineas ruined lunch

Know why my apron pockets are bulging? It's another sign of fall. Acorns. I love acorns.

I never could resist picking up acorns. These are mostly green but sometimes the acorns are fall colored with orange, brown, and yellow. One fall I filled a small basket with big colorful acorns and put the basket in the living room. After a few days I was shocked to find tiny white worms all in the basket and on the floor. I tossed everything out the door.

These are the first acorns I've noticed on the ground. Late yesterday the wind got up, blowing like there was a storm coming. The clouds got dark and there was a sprinkle of rain across the pond, but never a storm. The winds must have caused these acorns to fall.

Did you know that a guinea will kill a frog? Neither did I. Well my day is ruined! I had just put Bun Bun in the dog lot and was on my way to the teeny tiny garden to pick a handful of grape tomatoes for my salad when I spotted it. One of the guineas holding onto a big frog. My first instinct was to tackle the guinea and save the frog. I stood still for a second peeping through a crack in my fingers that were covering my eyes. The frog was limp. Suppose I did get the frog away from the guinea and the frog was not quite dead but was badly injured. If only I had gone out there sooner. I love frogs. I realize that this is simply nature's way. I can't save everything. Poor frog. I went on to the garden and got that handful of grape tomatoes but somehow the salad doesn't sound too good now.

Here they are acting all innocent. Probably searching out another frog...

I went out to look for the dead frog but it was not there.

Better get busy. The living room floor needs to be vacuumed again, thanks to Eli, and I am the vacuum cleaner person around here.

Thank you for visiting.

Dumperoo and the Red Peppers

Last Saturday when I gathered everything in the teeny tiny garden, I also picked all the red peppers. Only two pepper plants but both were hanging full of peppers. Anyhow, yesterday I borrowed some fishing line from Poppy's shop and began stringing up the red peppers. These dried peppers should be good this winter. Todd, I plan to send a string of peppers to you...just in case you enter another chili making contest. This just might do the trick! :)

Dumperoo was most interested in helping.

Sorry about the gun in this picture. Poppy was in the woods earlier working on his deer stand. He carries a gun in case he sees a Copperhead...

After all the peppers were strung Poppy helped me hang them...

Oh, the peppers are hung over the refrigerator so when I took the picture I also got this picture. One day I will have a baby donkey. This picture hangs here to remind me...

Once again, thank you for visiting.
