Sewing on the old couch, again!

Dearest friends,

Thank you so much for the nice comments, get well wishes, and prayers for my shoulder pain/pinched nerve. It hurts! It's that nagging agravating nerve pain that won't quit! :)

Here's the latest doctor's orders...get an MRI, (scheduled for March 2), physical therapy (begins next Tuesday), and prescribed Gabapentin for pain, (it helps with the pain but not the numbness and tingling in my left arm and hand).

Isn't it amazing how long it takes to see a doctor now days, then wait, wait, wait to get the MRI, and then another wait to get scheduled for physical therapy.

Anyhow, looks like getting that new living room suite has been put on hold again too. Poppy says, Mel, we can't get rid of Eli's chair, it has been his since he was a baby.

He grew up in this big old chair...2015 before I made covers for the cushioned chair arms.

and still today...Eli's favorite spot in the house. So, what to do. I have searched everywhere for a piece of the vintage gold upholstery fabric like in the picture. I love the old gold with large cabbage roses...but none to be found.

A few weeks ago Shelby and I, after a visit to my doctor, stopped by the Goodwill store. On the household goods table I picked up a piece, 2 1/2 half yards, of gold upholstery fabric. Who would have thought!!

and so friends, for the amount of $1.69 and with my numb and tingling left hand, I have made, such as they are, covers for the comfortable old 30 year old leather couch.

You see, this once wonderful, rather expensive, old leather (real cowhides) couch and fat chair was one of the first purchases for our newly built, little log cabin in the woods. I suppose both our heart strings are attached to this old set. :) So what the heck. What's another year or two, or three.

Not my best sewing for sure. Due to my guess work, none of the seams in front came out in the same place.
Of course, our living room is dimly lit. Flaws really don't stand out that much. Reminds me of what Tasha Tudor said about her house, "everyone says my house is dark, but people don't realize how dark old houses were. I love it dark. It's like a nice chipmunk's nest."

However! I did say to Poppy, "once these cushion covers begin to wear, we are getting a new living room suite, right?"

I'll leave you with the warmth and comfort of a nice crackling fire. Got a cold front coming through today.
Thank you for visiting. Thank you to a new follower too.

Love,
Henny

  1. You could always replace everything "but" Eli's chair when it becomes necessary. :-)

Praying for you, Henny. God bless you all.

  2. Sorry to learn you are still having pain Henny, hopefully the docs will be able to help once they have all the reports.
I'm smiling at your couch and chair, because I think it is just perfect. I tend to hold on to things for ever, my furniture is 35 years old, and still not thinking of changing. The new couches are so deep in the cushions, every one I have sat on, you have to scoot all the way back to get support, and then your legs won't touch the ground :)
Sweet Eli will agree with me, just hold on to it :)
    Hugs,
    ~Jo

  3. Yes, don't be in a hurry to get rid of Eli's chair. He always looks so sweet and comfortable in it, like the lord of the manor.

  4. Good news for you to get these appointments lined up finally. Just hope it all pays off with pain relief.
Your sewing looks just fine. And Eli will be content for many more years. It is still bitter cold up here
so I could use a real fireplace at the moment, lol.

  5. That does seem like a long time to wait for appointments.
Eli looks so comfortable there in his chair. :)

  6. Oh, bless sweet Eli. He loves his little nest too! You did a good job, and you're right that that is a fine sofa, and it's hard to get rid of one like that! Cozy. I hope you are on the mend soon, friend. I hate that you are having to mess with this medical stuff as spring is starting to come out.

  7. It sounds as if the new Dr. is coming up with some good approaches to find out what your pain is all about and also has offered some meds that help mitigate it somewhat. Steps in the right direction but I do wish they were a little bit bigger steps. March 2nd is a long way off when you feel so bad.

I had to laugh at the pics of Eli, he seems to be saying "Don't you guys even THINK about getting rid of MY chair"

I know what you mean about not being able to get rid of a couch. We have one in the living room that has to be almost 40 years old (recovered once). I have never liked it much but it is sooo comfortable. Bill or I end up on it for at least awhile almost even night. Wake up and can't get back to sleep but a change of location often helps with that. So it's still with us. It's part of the family now I guess.

    You take care now!

  8. I'm so sorry you are still dealing with that pain, and that you have to wait so long for the MRI.
Eli does look very comfy in that chair. :)

  10. Oh, I'm so sorry that you're still having so much pain but I am glad that you're finally getting some help with therapy and the MRI.
I know what it's like to want new furniture but you sure did a wonderful job with the cushions. I think you're too hard on yourself. Eli is so beautiful sitting in his chair. I love the ones you show us of him with his teddy bear. He is the sweetest thing ever. I would love to wrap my arms around him and give him a big hug. Ellie too.
I'm praying for you dear Henny to have a relief from the pain very soon.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  11. Henny, I am impressed with your new couch covers. You do have talent. Eli is such a lucky dog. It sounds as though you are finally going to get help with the pinched nerve. Hopefully, by the time gardening gets in full swing you will be doing much better.

  12. When something's as important to you as Eli's chair and the couch, there's always a way to hang onto them a bit longer. Your home looks so cozy and comfortable. New furniture won't change the fact that "home is the sacred refuge of our lives." (John Dryden, English poet, 1631-1700 - had to look that up!) You did a fine job with the cushion covers in spite of your pain. Hoping you'll be able to get through the time until the MRI. May you be healed by the time spring comes!! God be with you. ♥♥♥

  13. Gosh, sure hope your doctor can figure out what's going on after you have that MRI. I just hate tests li8ke that but sometimes they're necessary. All your pain sounds awful....sure hope PT helps too! I'd say you're doing a fine job with making that old chair and couch work out for awhile longer. It all looks good and Eli looks happy! Your house has a nice cozy feel to it!

  14. I'm sorry you're still dealing with the pain and tingling in your left arm and hand. Hopefully the MRI will be helpful in figuring out what the problem is.
Finding that upholstery fabric at the Goodwill store was a find!! When you go thrift shopping you just never know what you'll find.

  15. I'm sorry you are still in so much pain. I don't know how you did all that sewing with shoulder pain. The couch sure does look good. You have always been a talented seamstress! I'm keeping you in my prayers that you get some relief from pain soon!

  16. Goodness! ALL behind again..HeHe! :).
We had a bad day over here yesterday,
winds and gales up to 100+mph..in the
    south here..and..much the same all
over, three people killed by falling
trees, worst winds on record, but,
to~day it's all quiet and peaceful,
    and the suns out..! :).

    AND..No! Poppy's right..you can't
take Eli's chair away, it would be
like taking his teddy away from him..
One thing with cats and dogs, they
    don't like change..especially cats..! :(.

Pleased to read, that things are moving
forward as regards your arm/hand problem,
it won't cure it, but, certainly ease the
tension, and, yes, we have a problem seeing
a doctor over here, not that l've seen mine
in two years, she's phoned me twice, saying
she'd not seen me..l said jokingly....
    "No! I've been ill"..! :). Oh! Well...C'est
    La Vie..! :).

Well..Best get on..bit of catching up with to~day,
Have'nt been to the supermarket as yet..Play it
by ear..not moving to far over the weekend...! :).

  17. I so wish you could have had therapy a long time ago...and hope that the MRI does not show anything that cannot be fixed. Shoulder pain is so limiting.

I would hold on to the couch as long as I could. I have been lookig for recliners and nothing seems to be made ver well. You would not believe how awful my recliners are...but I just keep waiting. Hoping to find something that is a bit better made than what I have been seeing. We did see an electric recliner that was comfortable. But one cost about $1500! But even if I was willing to pay that, all I can think of is how in the world would I ever move it if it needed to be moved? They were so heavy.

  18. I love your comfy couch! I'm praying for your shoulder pain and the numbness. This stuff is not fun at all.

  19. Ah friend I so understand about a dog's favorite chair. Our Shelby has a spot and if I change it right now I think she would be hurt - so we too make do. In all honesty it is just hubby and I and two Shepherds and an old cat that live here. Besides these days we have so few visitors that it doesn't matter like it once did. If the truth were told our old is much better than anything new we'd buy today. Good quality is a rare find in the current market so I am quite content to relax in something worn and comfy. Hugs!!

  20. So sorry about your pain, and its such a hard thing to endure..especially, as you are experiencing on a daily basis. So sorry and have said a prayer to help you through it. That Eli is soooooooooooo adorable..I have to agree ..he looks very attached to his chair. :0) .. I love the look and comfort of your leather..and what I have found about 3 or so years ago..the furniture that is on the market now is just not comparable to the quality choices we once had..they are making puretee crap(oops, sorry). I finally purchased one in High Point but had to pay through the nose to get one I could live with..and I do still love it..but the quality is just not there. Purchased at Furniture Market South where nothing is cheap. A sofa is something that in our Family..stays a longgggggggg time.. So enjoy the life of your great one longer..and I hope one day you will find another great one. You are so blessed with your excellent sewing skills..love it always seeing your work. Take care and hope reflief comes soon for your pain. Thank you for sharing..always enjoy your blog and style of living. Sincerely.

  22. You have a lovely, warm, comfortable (for people and pets!) chipmunk nest, Henny! You are very brave to undertake reupholster with your painful, tingly shoulder and arm. It looks great and I can see that Eli is very happy you decided to keep his chair a while longer. What we won’t do for our fur babies, right?

  23. Considering how hard it was for you, I think you have made a fantastic job of the covers :)

  24. Sending my love and prayers for your healing! You are amazing going ahead and sewing those covers just like it was nothing. Take care Henny!

  25. What a great compromise, I think you did a fabulous job with the gold fabric and new couch covers! It is so hard to change things with our animals, and I can imagine all the wonderful memories that couch holds for your family. So nice that you have the talents and skills to make cushion coverings for the couch and continue to be able to use it for now. Praying you get relief soon for your poor shoulder!!!

  26. Did you make it to therapy? I hope they are able to help you. Every therapist I have ever seen with Roger/with me has been amazing. So, so good at what they do. So, I am hoping and praying they are helping you.

  28. Oh dear, sorry to hear about that pain, hoping it will soon be over. You did a lovely job on the cushions. I would not dare tread on doing that, they would be quite dreadful, if I even finished them. I love that little greenhouse, do you happen to know what the measurements are? I'm having a bit of trouble responding to comments over at my blog, so when I figure it out, I will respond.
