Don't know about you, but we could sure use a day of sunshine around here. In fact, we could use an entire month with no rain.
The weatherman said sun today, with a few clouds...I wonder what state he was talking about? It's been dark and cloudy here and misting rain.
Eli and Weetie have have worked full time keeping up with the yapping and barking of hunting dogs running in the area. I must have opened the front and back doors a thousand times...letting them out and in, as they tore from front porch to back porch; gnarling and barking and carrying on.
I'm tired of hearing about it all too. Every year, it's a battle between the still hunters and the dog hunters. Poppy and a couple others out here still hunt...sitting in a tree for hours, hoping a monster buck will walk past.
While down below on the paved road the dog hunters abound; the sides of the roads lined with mud splattered pick-up trucks, each sporting a dog box on the back. The dogs are released, then the hunters gather around each other's trucks to admire the red mud and wait for the dogs to roust up a deer.
and like Poppy says, once a pack of deer dogs run under your tree stand, you might as well come down and go home. WHY am I even talking about this! Well, I do have one more "hunting" story...
deeply embedded in the fabric was a straight pin, with a pearl head! I laughed! Of course, it had to be my fault, but I have no idea how that pin got there.
Oh, I've been meaning to show you what a good job our new, little red hens are doing...
Had no idea these hens would start laying in December. Big pretty eggs, and these are the sweetest hens.
Well - Poppy needs to come around here to hunt. No dog hunting in this area. My hubby would not be happy!

Sure glad you found that fancy pin that was sticking Poppy when he was hunting! I bet you are sick of hunting with your dogs getting all riled up by the hunter's dogs. Our state doesn't allow deer hunting with Dogs. In my younger years I remember seeing a picture in the local paper of a pile of dogs that had been shot by the Sheriff, because they were chasing deer together. They said ...."If you see your dog in this picture, you know what happened to him." Dogs were NOT allowed to chase deer. I think there are about 8 states that allow it....that's too bad. Wow those hens are doing great work! Hope to see you again soon! Happy New Year.
ReplyDeleteI always sat at the base of a tree when I hunted, but I haven't hunted for years. I couldn't now if I wanted to - too crippled up. At least your dogs will be settled. It's surprising how a pin can hide. I've had that problem too. Nice eggs!

ReplyDeleteI don't know anything about deer hunting but somehow using dogs to flush the deer out seems unfair ( to the deer and to hunters who still hunt).
Look at those gorgeous brown eggs lined up and looking so perfect. Your hens are rewarding you for all the care you give them.
That's funny about the pin but I'm sure it didn't feel too good to Poppy! I've had sewing pins show up in the strangest places at times. Those sure are good looking eggs. I'm glad you are happy with your hens - have you named any of them yet?
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the mystery of the bites/sting was found. A straight pin! Would would have thought of that? Oh I know about all of those hunting stories from our friends who live on the mountain. They have their own property and people overrun it without asking permission all of the time. It really is ridiculous. They live there. Children play all over their acres. But they don't dare let them play outside during hunting season because of the strangers hunting on their land.
ReplyDeleteThose eggs are wonderful. I've heard several people say their chickens are laying unexpectedly in Dec. & Jan. There is nothing better than fresh eggs. I wish we lived closer to you and I would happily buy some from you if you and Poppy couldn't eat them all.
I love the pictures of Eli and Weetie. They are guarding their Mom very well.

Think l've said this before...But! l've been
ReplyDeleteagainst hunting ALL my life, especially with
dogs, so it was good news that hunting with
dogs was banned over here a couple years ago.
They are allowed to follow an animal sent,
and no more..but, they do stray and break to
law, and get fined..! :).
So, l do class myself a bit of a hypocrite,
though l'd never dream of killing, let alone
hunting, an animal, l will never let it go
to waste food wise..! And..l was raised mostly
on wildlife..!
The top two photos are lovely..don't know why,
but they remind me of Batman and Robin..! :)
I can't get over how Eli is always so white...

Glad your hunting season is over. We dont live around any hunters. We have lots of deer but there is no hunting here since we live around farm land and private owned forest. My chickens have stopped laying right now. Im only getting one a day. Your eggs look wonderful. Happy new year to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteHunting with dogs is not my cup of tea...well maybe squirrel hunting! I think deer hunting with dogs is illegal here. :)
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like your area is fairly densely populated. I'm not a hunter but don't have a problem with it. It should be safe and not in a populated area.
ReplyDeleteI watched eleven does pass through the yard this morning, the buck is usually not too far behind, but always by himself, they remind me of a wild bunch of horses, and just roam at will...

Good thing Poppy's bite was a pin and not tick or spider. We have deer hunting in Ohio, and it is fine with me.
ReplyDeleteHubby used to do it and I love venison. But NO dogs allowed for deer, just smaller game. I last saw sun on Sunday
Dec. 27. Dark, damp and a bit snowy every day, yuck. So glad to hear your new hens are laying eggs so well.
It's been dreary and rainy here too... although this week may be a bit better. I don't like the idea of hunting with dogs either. DH used to hunt - from deer stands I believe, but doesn't anymore. And I know that the sound of guns going off disturbs the horses at my daughter's place. Your eggs are beautiful. Would love to see more pics of the chickens!

ReplyDeleteThe pin in the thermal story is a good one, but a ouch at the same time. We can not hunt deer in Wisconsin using dogs. You can for bear, coyote, bobcat and rabbits.. and birds.
I'm glad deer season is over here too. There are no dogs allowed though, for deer. Your girl's eggs are just beautiful!

Eli always looks so nice and white and well groomed.
Those eggs sure are great looking and I bet the yolks are a golden color too.
WE have lots of hunters here, esp. duck hunters, and tons of fishermen too. They stop on the side of the highway by a little bridge, and sit and fish over the edge.

Glad hunting season is over too! We have had no sunshine for a few days and no hope of any for a few more days! It's always a struggle to get through these next two months until we finally get a hope of Spring again!

We need lots and lots of sunshine to counteract the horrors in our country right now. More sunshine and more vaccine, i say!!
