A thing or two...or maybe twelve or thirteen?

Ah, have you wondered about the baby Dove I rescued? Well, he has really grown. In fact, my plan was to release him this morning.
you see, yesterday he refused to eat anything but bird seed. (Looks like enough seed to feed a flock). Twice, I mixed the usual wheat germ, cornmeal, and baby cereal with warm water and carried it to him. He has been eating from a large syringe, covered on one end with a finger cut from a rubber glove...
but he wanted nothing to do with me or the food. His home has been the screened-in back porch, where he has learned to fly from one end to the other. I brought in a dead tree limb...
that reaches from the cage he sleeps in to the porch railing. Anyhow, when I walked out on the porch this morning, he greeted me by lighting on top of my head. Glad I had his cereal mixed and warm...he ate like he was starving. So I'm thinking maybe he should stay with us another day or two. (the porch is needing a good scrubbing)!

I've surely neglected the teeny tiny garden lately. It's the heat and humidity! Gosh! It's so hot! This was yesterday's picking...
mostly Okra in the bottom. When it cools off a little I'm going in with a machete. :)

and there's rabbit news too...
Four hours I worked, cleaning two of the bunny condos. Oh, these digging rabbits! I pulled out everything and covered the ground with rabbit wire, then hauled dirt in from across the road.
Got these two pet carriers from a lady on Craigslist. She was asking $25.00 for each, but said "yes" to $40.00 for both. So Poppy went with me to Wake Forest to pick them up.

Two more sections of the lot to clean and put down rabbit wire. Remember the two snow white rabbits...

Well, this is Lily, and you can barely see Ivy on the right. Can you believe how big they are now! When I finish their lots I will post an 'after' picture.

and...

my two oldest bunbuns...Bun Bun and Fiona. These two never dig but I plan to re-do their lot too. Rabbit wire on the ground keeps little mice from visiting during the night.

You know, working on the "mushroom post" I thought, "now who would want to look at a bunch of mushrooms"? But goodness! Thank you for not only looking, but for leaving the nice comments.

So thinking I'm done with the mushrooms, Poppy hollers , "Mel, where's your camera"? There's a mushroom down near the stepping stones the size of pie pan". So, here we go again, but I promise, just a few....

this is the one Poppy was yelling about. It was huge!

mention stepping stones and you see who is first out the door...

anyhow, you've got to see this really gross mushroom growing down by the bunny lot...

I mean, this thing looks like something that came up from the ocean floor.

and how about this nice suede one...
would make a nice table in our living room.

and Poppy thinks this one is cute...

and a scattering of teeny tiny baby orange ones...
and speaking of orange, this one toppled over but isn't it pretty...

okay, enough mushrooms!

Don't know if I should publish this or not :(  Well, here goes. Hope to be back soon.

Love,
Henny

  3. Henny, I would love to send you photos of a couple mushrooms growing here in upstate NY! Also the rabbit hole I finally let my little bunny Mocha keep! She has, over the years started several holes that I fill in because they would lead to escape. This summer she's worked her tail off, digging a lovely rabbit hole in the center of their penned area. So far I've let her keep it; she's worked so hard and enjoyed every minute of it. Her sister, Cocoa, does not seem to work but will on occasion venture down to look around. They are Dutch bunny sisters, bought for my daughter several years ago. She's since lost interest so they are mine. (Tho I recently told my 6 year old grandson they can be his, whenever he visits!) Thank you, I love your blog.

    1. Donna, I would love to see a picture of the mushrooms, and your sweet bunnies. You can send them to my email address hennypennylane@gmail.com I know mushrooms don't last too long. Hope you did get a picture. That is so cute that your Mocha "worked her tail off". :) For a while I left the holes the bunnies dug, but it was to the point that I could not walk, or find a level place to sit a bucket down inside their lots. Bet your grandson loves the bunnies. Rabbits are sweet, aren't they. Thank you Donna.

  4. I bet that sweet little baby Dove thinks you are his Mom now! Actually you are in a way. He may not want to leave when he gets older. You have such a good way with all animals of all types. It is so nice to see the bunnies including Bun Bun and Fiona. You've had those two for a long time I think. There sure are a lot of mushrooms around your place. Most of them are cute but that big black one looks almost evil! I hope you get some cooler weather soon. We may get some next week and I'm sure hoping we do. You and Poppy have a good weekend!

    1. Thank you Bonnie. It's going to be hard to let the little Dove go. I want to make sure he won't starve, on his own. He sits and watches the doves that come to the yard to eat so hopefully he is learning from them. Tomorrow is supposed to be cooler with less humidity and I can't wait! So was Monday, but that has already changed and now they are calling for rain on Monday. Who knows? You have a good weekend too Bonnie, and thank you.

  6. I wonder if this year there is an explosion of mushrooms around your area. It's amazing how many kinds you have.
Your dove seems to be thriving and I wonder if it will hang around after you give it freedom. Why leave and fend for yourself if a kind person will take care of you?
Your bunnies are all looking healthy and happy.
Are you ready for September? I suppose it will be here in just a few days whether we're ready or not!!

    1. Hey Granny Marigold. Must be an explosion of mushrooms in our area and I figured it goes along with all the other weird and strange happenings of 2020! Oh yes, I am so ready for September and maybe some cooler weather. Thank you!

  7. I have a feeling that dove may never want to leave you. He thinks you're his Mommy.
I can't believe how many different mushrooms you have around your home. I agree with all of your descriptions and I think Poppy is right. That little one is cute.
So much work on the bunny yards. How wonderful of you to care for each of these sweet animals.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

    1. Thank you Betsy. The little dove probably does think I am his mommy. It is so cute how he squats down and flutters his wings when he sees me. Hope you and your husband are settled in now from the move.

  8. Ah! Bless! What a lovely 'happy' story to
wake up to..just gone seven over here, the
dove looks amazing Henny, so now not only
have you got a Guardian Angel, but a dove
to watch over you..! But! A dove as well..
Even though it may sit on yer head..Bless! :).

And the bunnies look as though they have a
life of luxury..the bunny condos..look more
like Penthouses..HeHe! Happy as bunnies as
    they say..! :).

Yes! And as for all the mushrooms, l sent the
link to a dew friends, as we've never seen so
    many in one place..
Interesting things to, well worth reading about
there lifestyle..amazing how quick they grow to.
Oh! And they taste nice, especially with garlic
    and butter..!

Well best get on..popping into town to~day, nice
and bright and dry, after two days of storms/gales,
the wind even blew half my Virginia Creeper down,
    so that needs seeing to..!
    Where's my lemon tea..Oh! just thinking..any name
for the dove Henny..you must call it something,
    perhaps Daisy..Daisy dove..what ever you do, don't
    call it 'Donald'..HeHe! :o).
And be careful what you do with that machete...! Bless!

    1. Thank you Willie! Isn't it strange that we have all these weird mushrooms this year? This has been a strange year, in many ways. I had not thought about a name for the dove. No, I won't use 'Donald'. :) Sorry about your Virginia Creeper. Does it have the trumpet-like orange blooms? Glad your windy weather has past. We may get storms this afternoon, coming from the remants of that last hurricane that hit Louisiana.

    2. Virginia creeper, Victoria creeper, five-leaved ivy,
is a species of flowering plant in the grape family..
The flowers are small and greenish, produced in clusters
in late spring, and mature in late summer or early fall
into small hard purplish-black berries..The berries are
      toxic...
The berries are not toxic to birds and provide an important
winter food source for many bird species...

  12. That's so sweet about the dove. I hope it recovers fully and can go out and live a good little dove life. They always make me laugh, how they cannot fly without calling at the same time. Those bunnies are adorable, but take a bit of work. -Jenn

  13. Ah, thank you. I'm sure going to worry, when I release him. We have several doves that come in the yard to eat the seed we put out. Hopefully, he will learn from them. Actually, his parents may be around. Yes, I love the bunnies, but they are a lot of work. I need to have my head examined for ever taking in six rabbits. :)

  14. Hi friend - what a sweet dove - I think you may have be caring for this one for a little longer. Your bunnies are so cute. Glad to see that your garden is still bearing veggies in spite of the heat. Take care and have a wonderful weekend. Hugs!

  16. Nice to hear how well the baby dove is doing. You have such a way with animals!!
So much work you've been doing on the bunny pens!!
Such interesting mushrooms. The one you though looked like it came from under the sea looks like a stingray.
My post later today will have a picture of a mushroom too. It looks kind of like a brain.

  17. You are quite the animal whisperer. You take such good care of your furry and feathered friends.
I find mushrooms very interesting. You do have some weird ones.

  18. Henny, I do think that dovey is growing like a weed! Good job taking care of her. And the fungi are really
remarkable. I biked 15 miles just today to Kingwood Center, which is a fantastic public garden and 100 year old mansion.
The original owner and donator of this property was so into fungi, there is a display of hundreds of them made of
ceramic. Painted true to color and size! Love seeing that display for as long as I have been going there.
I love rabbits and you certainly have made their homes cozy and safe. I'll let you keep the okra, though!

  19. Your rabbits are adorable. I esp. have always loved Bun Bun. :) Something about your soil must just LOVE mushrooms! I wonder if you have truffles too, underground? Just a silly question, somehow they remind me of each other. I also will not enter the garden again without a machete, I think. We haven't been back there in a couple of weeks, since Adam saw a couple of copperheads in the pasture.

  20. I'm amazed at the variety of mushrooms. We always have a few but only a couple of different varieties. I could use you machete around here. The herb garden is very like a jungle with a huge swath of black eyed susans, ironweed about 6 feet tall, valerian that was about 5 feet tall but has at least been cut down to size and much, much creeping Charlie. Some of these will be transplanted but a bunch will be pulled up by the roots and sent off with the yard waste people. They love me. I keep them in business these days.

  21. The dove has gotten so big! He'll soon be off, you took good care of him - and the bunnies too.
I like seeing all those different mushrooms.

  25. Wow your bunny pens are going to be snazzy! And what a sweet dove. Do you think if you were to open the door he /she might explore during the day, but return at night to roost? I have no clue as to the habits of dives 🐦

  26. I love seeing your happy bunnies. You have made the nicest home for them! Your dove looks quite grown up now. We have so many of them at our feeders and don’t see any parents feeding young ones anymore, so I bet he is ready to “fly the coop” too. I wonder if he will come back to visit. Oh, my those mushrooms! Ours are so plain, plentiful but mostly white. Have a good week, dear Henny.
