Stuff here on Henny Penny Lane

Here I am, dragging back again after all this time. I've missed you all so much. Where do the days go, anyhow?

Things have been pretty hectic around here lately...and I just haven't been able to get my thoughts together for a post.

Wish you could hear the rain pouring down right now. Sounds like another gully-washer. There's lightning and thunder too and we are under a severe thunderstorm warning.

Oh! Could be the rain is sounding a little different because of the new tin roof. That's right, a brand new roof...and tin!

I'll show you first, the cabin with the old shingled roof...

and, a different angle, but the new tin roof...
Actually, these are called metal roofs now, but I like a tin roof. Log cabins need a tin roof.

These new metal roofs come in all colors now. We decided to go with brown. I walked all around the house trying to get a good picture to show you, but the brown color just doesn't stand out that much. Maybe that's a good thing.

Oh gosh, I've started all kinds of projects around here, and in the midst of this hot sticky humid weather!

Here's one...

Remember all the lilies I planted around the birdbath and was so excited to see them bloom, especially the stargazer lilies.

Well, the big tall red lilies were beautiful but the stargazer lilies were so weak and spindly, they could hardly support the puny little blossom.

After digging everything out I realized what poor soil was there.

After a trip to town I emptied bag after bag of Miracle Grow Garden Soil, set our four knock-out rose bushes I had rooted, and filled in with pine bark mulch.

Hate to tell Poppy but I need several more bags. I sure do. Heck, I just might turn the whole front yard into flower beds. That would be fun. wouldn't it?

Then just today I came up with a brilliant idea. Seriously! Got started on it right after feeding the animals this morning, but look, here it is going on ten O'clock. Poppy will be coming this way soon, sleepy and yawning, and ready for bed.

Thank goodness, it's a post...such as it is. So, I will be back soon to tell you what else I am working on. It's brilliant! :)

I will be visiting and catching up. Hope we are still friends. :)

Love,
Henny

  1. The new metal roof looks nice! We plan to put metal on our roof.
My yard and flower beds are a total mess; we've just had three big trees
cut down and of course limbs fell onto the plants. But most were plants
that will come back next spring; one was a white stargazer lily which grew
tall enough I had to tie it to a tree branch!

    1. Thank you lil red hen. Bet your stargazer lily was pretty. That's funny that you had to tie it to a tree. I had one in the back that grew kinda tall and bloomed pretty, but those I bought and planted in front did terrible. Now I've got to put them somewhere else.

  3. Will the bags of soil nourish the soil that was already there or will you have to always add a little bag soil to that area?

    1. I'm going to try and keep the soil rich in the area. Mulch helps keep the soil good too. I had been piling on the pine straw, and that did nothing to help the soil. Thanks Sandi.

I bet you can't wait until next spring to see how pretty it will be when everything is blooming. I can not wait to hear what your brilliant idea is! You are so good at coming up with creative projects. Enjoy your weekend!

  6. I actually thought of you today and wondered what you were up to these hot summer days. I never would have guessed that you were getting a brand new tin roof on the cabin. It looks so nice and neat, and the brown color is perfect. But, you are a teaser leaving us wondering about your new brilliant idea. :~)

  8. Hi Henny- The metal Cabin roof looks very neat- yes, a tin roof seems to magnify the sound of the rain. I like your gardening around the Bird Bath- things will look great in a couple of months as things grow larger. No rain here which we desperately need. Cheers. KEV.

  9. The new brown tin roof suits your home in the woods. I know what you mean about time just slipping by and next thing you know it's been many days since a post was done. I'm wondering what your latest idea is... I'm sure it will be lovely!!

    1. Thank you Granny Marigold. We thought the brown color would fit best out here in the woods. A couple of folks out this way suggested a green roof. I was afraid green on top of a red house would look like Christmas year round. :)

  10. Your new roof looks wonderful. I love metal roofs. I remember the sound of rain on the tin roof at my grandparents' Ozark home. You've got me wondering... What are you up to??? Don't leave us hanging long. The flowers around the birdbath look great even if they're small now. They'll be beautiful next spring and summer.

    1. Hey Peg. Thank you. I remember hearing the rain on those old tin roofs too. This doesn't sound quite as good because they put the metal on top of the shingles, for more protection and insulation. My brilliant idea isn't that great. :) Just another gardening idea of mine. :) I will be back soon.

  12. Hello friend...
Goodness! A tin roof, love that, and l bet it
sounds great when it's raining..l could certainly
live with that..I'd be singing that song.......
"Raindrops keep falling on my head" well, on the
    roof then..HeHe! Lovely! :).

And, the bird bath looks great to..but, l can't
see any taps..where are the taps..!!! :).
The birds will love that, nice posh bath to
wallow in..do you get any vultures...! :O).

Sorry! I'm feeling a bit silly this morning..
It's a Bank Holiday weekend, through till
Tuesday..last one of the summer..so people
will be popping off all over for a long
weekend away..I'm hoping for a quiet one..
    But somehow, l don't think so..make sure l've
got plenty of tea and coffee in..and a few cakes!
And..it's gonna be a record breaking weather wise,
so, l'll be able to get out in the garden..and
    watch the flowers grow...HeHe! :o).
Don't know any birdbath stories, but these will do....
Why did the duck go ring-ring?
    He got a phone bill.

What did the little bird say to the big bird?
Peck on someone your own size.

What do you call a formal dance for ducks?
    A fowl ball.

What kind of ducks rob banks?
    Safe Quackers.

What did the parrot say when she fell in love with the frog?
    Polly wants a croaker!

What would you name a parrot made out of plastic?
    Polly-Esther!

    HeHe! That's it 10-4 over and out...Have fun..! :o).

    1. Thank you Willie! You always have the funniest little jokes and riddles go along with my post. Actually, we have had a vulture come around, and more than one. They used to use our little pier for sunbathing. It was weird to see them with their long black wings stretched out to the sun. I may have some pictures somewhere. Hope you can get out in the garden today. We had a colf front come through last night. It feels wonderful today.

    2. Do you know..it's Monday..I was just sitting here,
just had lunch..I like to look back on some posts..
And..l just thought of Smokey and a tin room...a Hot
Tin Roof..Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a play by Tennessee
Williams. One of Williams's more famous works and his
personal favorite, the play won the Pulitzer Prize for
      Drama in 1955...
In the play, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof the title is a metaphor.
It refers to someone who is doing something that is hurting
him/her physically or emotionally but he/she has to do it
like a cat. A cat has to jump on hot tin roofs to get from
      one place to another quickly...
(And that is the meaning of..'Cat On a Hot Tin Roof').....
HeHe! I bet Smokey could get up there....Bless!x

  14. Your place is so lovely new & old roof. That must surely be a lovely sound with the rain, and I agree a cabin should have a tin roof. Those roses will be so pretty there. Ihave some Russian Sage I want to plant today, and a wee little Heirloom Rose I got the the other day at the greenhouse. I hope it lives, we have poor soil here, like clay.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Dear Henny, could you tell us how you make the root cuttings of your roses? Years ago, I was able to do it successfully with the glass jar method, I'm not having as much luck this year or in recent years. I bought a preety heirloom rose, and would like to get some cuttings, not much to cut from but if I can salvage a little rose plant from it I would be so happy. Thank you

    1. Thank you faith. Oh, I've had the best luck rooting roses, and I'm sure it is just luck. Anyhow, I clip off a piece of the rose bush, usually where two little limbs join, then stick it in a pot filled with potting soil, push it down good and gentle pack the soil around it. I keep the pots outside near the faucet so I can keep them watered. Seems like the moist soil makes them root faster. Well that works for me. Good luck. Hope you get some pieces rooted.

    2. Faith, I forgot one of the most important things...clip off the leaves and any blooms on the cutting you are trying to root. That puts the energy into growing roots.

  17. I love your new tin roof. We have lots of them up here in the mountains because the snow slides right off. I love the sound of the rain on them. Your garden bed looks so pretty. I'm impressed by all that you accomplished and looking forward to hearing of your next adventures.

  20. I loved to hear rain on the roof when we had a tin roof. Except sometimes If was so noisy you could not talk on the phone and had to call back when the rain stopped! The garden around your birdbath looks lovely now. I don’t know how you can work outside in this heat. I haven’t done a thing except water since the beginning of August.

  21. We almost got a metal roof on our new house but ended up with shingles.
    Your new roof looks great.
I bet the rain sounds wonderful coming down on the metal roof. Love that sound.

  22. Wonderful new roof! I prefer tin, also.
The birds and the bees would certainly like a yard full of flowers, with no mowing?
    Sounds good to me!

  24. Hello dear Henny Penny. I get really excited about things like new tin roofs too ... I am glad you do also. Your new birdbath area looks wonderful - it will soon be spring here & I am so excited as its my favourite season. It is still wet & cold but things are starting to come to life already. Have a lovely weekend dear Henny xx

  27. I think you'll enjoy the roses around the bird bath. Where is the new home for the lilies?
A new roof is a big deal!

  28. Love the new roof, Henny. We put a steel roof on our new house and will eventually put one on the garage, too. I love the sound of the rain hitting it. I understand you being too busy to sit and blog; this time of year is ridiculous for that. One day runs into the next. We are starting to see signs of fall already. :-[ Sending love to all. xo

  29. No problem. I have had health problems but have started trying to post again but have not done a lot of commenting before this. I love to hear the sound of rain on a roof. When we had our fifth-wheel I loved hearing the rain on that roof. Could you tell me how to start a knock-out rose from the bush I have? You are sure a worker with all that digging and rearranging. 32. Time does get on doesn't it. I can't believe it's almost September. But some cool weather (although today was totally wonderful, sunny, cool, with a nice breeze)and the end of mosquito season. I think I have had more mosquito bites this than ever before. My husband coming up from the basement with long, long pieces of lumber and out the door to the garage without closing it behind him. I think that I have a family of mosquitos in the house now. Talk about unwelcome guests!! Any idea as to how long the life span of a mosquito is? Maybe I should just stop wiping out all those cobwebs, don't spiders eat mosquitos?

But the panels for the fence (hence the lumber up from the basement) are all done and the posts have been set around the yard. Now all we need is some dry weather in which to fix the panels to the posts.

I've been busy digging up plants endangered by the oncoming fence and relocating them to other beds. Lots of fun, but tiring too.

Your roof looks nice, some of the brightly colored ones look a little odd. Interesting that they're called metal roofs now hummm...is that because tin sounds too flimsy these days? I'd still call it a tin roof. Of course I still sometimes refer to the refrigerator as the ice box although I never in my life experienced one.

I can hardly wait to hear what your brilliant idea is and how you will implement it.

  33. Your roof looks great. Everyone around here choose metal when they get their homes re-roofed. We should be good for about 10 more years with the roof we have and then we'll go metal too. I transplanted my Knock Out roses last year and with the help of Miracle Grow they really took off this year. Our weather in Northern Indiana has turned cooler and the spiders are going crazy. It feels like Fall is in the air.
    xx, Carol

  35. Ah Henny what a delightful visit. I love your roof and like the term tin better than metal too. Looks like the summer heat has not deterred your garden work. Will be looking forward to reading about your new project. Have a great week. Hugs!

  36. I love reading your blog and hearing and seeing what you are doing in your yard.
My daughter had a tin roof put on her home and she said she loves the sound of rain on it. I think I will get my hubs to climb on ours and put a piece of tin on top of our shingles over our bedroom just so I can hear the rain. I would like a yard filled with flowers too. My husband said I should just plant it up instead of little plants here and there because he said he is getting dizzy mowing around them.
    Happy Week ahead
