Washing jars

At last! Clean, dust free jars!

Did you ever wonder what thirty years of dust looks like?

Well, maybe it hasn't been quite thirty years, but I can't remember the last time these jar (in the back) were washed. I should be ashamed of myself for showing you this.

Poppy says the dust and cob webs make the place look older. It looks older alright...like the owners have died and gone on!

This collection of canning jars and old milk bottles sits way up high on a shelf in the kitchen. It's a job, bringing in the tall ladder and climbing up and down, over and over...

but I did, and got it done, bringing down four at a time and washing them in hot soapy water.

Sparkling clean! What a good feeling it was when that last jar was dried and put back on that shelf.

One old milk bottle still had the cardboard cap. "Tuberculin Tested". Maybe I should be tested, after breathing in all that dust!

I'm a counter you know, and there were 63 bottles and jars, that row is four deep!

I was going to show you my scary Halloween decorations...such as it is, but no, I'll wait until Tuesday!

Thank you, if you're still here. Who wants to look at dust and dirt. :)

Love,
Henny

  2. It does not take long for dust to accumulate up high - the top of my frig gets this way. I love your collection of bottles. Doesn't it feel good to soap them up, rinse them, and see them shine? I look forward to your Halloween post! Have a nice evening.

  4. The dust and dirt were not entertaining, but those lovely jars and bottles were wonderful to see! You might have a small fortune in glass there!

  5. Its such a satisfying sight to see all of those jars sparkling clean and shiny.
    Job well done :)
I have the Mason jars atop my kitchen cupboards, and since my ankle surgery I've not been able to climb a chair and wash them. Instead, I go around with one of those extended wand Swiffer dusters and do the best I can.
My mum would call it a lick and a promise :)

  8. It definitely feels good to do that type of cleaning. When I do something similar, I always have to stop, look at it, and appreciate the look of it all finally being clean.

  9. Good job, Henny! Your old jars are quite impressive all neatly lined up...especially since they are now sparkling clean. A job like this really is a two-person job!

  10. You've made me ashamed. The top shelf of my china cabinet needs cleaning too, but I hate getting up on the ladder to do it. Your jars look great. They were pretty spooky looking.

  11. You can come and dust my stuff next I would hate to see how much dust is on my stuff. I hate to dust because it just settles right back in a few weeks. Or it could be I hate to dust. Oh well. Love you bunches!

  13. They really do sparkle now! I've been lackadaisical on the dusting lately, too. I vacuum the floor and carpets and keep them things picked job I've just been lazy about dusting. You have inspired me to get going ... tomorrow!

  15. a local farm's store still sells raw milk, though I'd rather trust Louis Pasteur on the matter

  17. I admire you for being willing to show the dust and dirt!! :) The bottles and jars (especially) are beautiful -- I love old canning jars, esp. the old lids. That's the real stuff! And it does feel so good to have it all clean. Still -- I wait for ages before doing that kind of job again :)

Thanks for showing us all of your sparkly jars and bottles. You certainly know how to get things spic and span! Now you won't have to do that for a long while again! Thank goodness you didn't fall down that ladder. Whew...sounds like a huge job. Can't wait to see Halloween at your house! Take care!

    1. Thank you Diane. All the scary dust was probably the best decorations. I should have waited until after Halloween to clean.

  20. I like how you treasure old stuff. I have a few of those old jars too, probably from my grandmother.
As you know, I collect things too. My pottery collection gets dusted once a year, when I move it from the shelves to make room for the Santa collection. Dusting is a bother.

  24. Wow that was a lot of work getting all those bottles and jars washed. How nice it all looks.
I have things up high that don't get dusted very often either.

  25. You have quite a few beautiful jars Henny! They look great up on top of your cupboards.

  26. I can't believe that you got down that ladder carrying FOUR jars at a time-----you must have been holding onto the ladder with your toes!

I love looking at someone else's accumulation of dust------it makes me not feel so guilty about the dusty shelves (not even high or hard to dust) in the living room that haven't been touched in at least a year! Not to mention the corner cabinet in this room where the other day I was able to write my name in the dust! Why didn't I just dust it while I was at it??????????? I don't know!

The jars all shined up and polished really pop on that high shelf and make a wonderful decoration.

    1. Oh Vic, I kept saying to myself, don't fall! I would sit two jars on top of the ladder and climb down with two. I do the same thing...look at the dust and walk away. I need to keep a dusting rag in my pocket. :) I thought about you this morning when I used my dish towel to wipe a little dust off the shiny chrome lids on my new red canisters. Thank you!!

  29. I remember old milk bottles with the paper caps. We drank from them at school; I always thought the tops of the bottles were nasty looking and didn't like to drink from them. It didn't help matters that I didn't care for milk anyway. I was used to drinking from a little tin cup at home. My girls have offered to help me clean things which are up high, but I guess that would be admitting I'm not young anymore.
