A rainy Monday!

Just when our little pond begins to clear up...

we get a big rain storm, and the big rain storm makes big orange mud puddles that overflow with bright orange muddy water, and that bright orange muddy water fills the ruts in the dirt road, then runs swiftly like the rapids down hill, turning the corner onto the side road that runs past our little pond. But wait, the muddy water doesn't run past, it makes a sharp left turn into the head of the pond. See it rushing in?

and...
Poppy was out Saturday cleaning up, then painting, the little john boat he bought off Craigslist last year. I'll let you know when he catches that ten pound Bass from the pond.

We are getting cucumbers from the garden...five, so far.

Mama used to love cucumbers fresh from the garden. She would peel a small cucumber, cut two slits in the top for sprinkling salt into, and then eat the cucumber whole. She peeled many a cucumber for me too, just like that.

Why she and Aunt Ruby would carry the salt shaker with them to sit outside under the shade trees. Somebody was always bringing up something from the garden or cutting a ripe watermelon...and we put salt on everything.

Have you ever heard of mater biscuits? Take a cold biscuit, one left over from breakfast, slice it in half, spread mayonnaise on each half and then slices of a red juicy tomato right out of the garden. Oh my goodness!!

Before we got this big rain today, the garden was very hot and dry. There is a lizard living under the cucumber and squash plants, and what a perfect home. I am hoping he will stay there and eat any squash bugs that come visiting. Anyhow, I put a saucer of water under the plant for him.

As Poppy was leaving for work at 10:30 this morning, I thought to myself, there is a break in the clouds and the sky is looking brighter! With three buckets of cuttings to pot up, well I needed to be outside...

even as bad as I needed to sweep and vacuum the floors, I marched right up to the little potting shed, and got busy, I was finishing up with the eighteenth pot when the rain started. Hurrying, I got everything put away and was back inside before the bottom fell out.

Gosh, I'm wound up today. You've probably walked away by now. We've got another break in the rain, so I need to feed the bunnies. Hope to be back soon.

Love,
Henny

  5. Reading your posts is always so soothing, Henny. Which really makes no sense because you're always working so hard in them! I must just like watching other people toil! :o)

  6. We had horizontal rain today, I couldn't get to the greenhouse without being soaked to the skin. Instead I had a day sewing, once the days chores were done. The garden looks better and better.

  7. I'm hoping that orange water won't mess up your pond again !
I have always loved eating cucumbers, and a family member gave us a half dozen yesterday, freshly picked from the garden....yum.
Your garden produces so well, with all that tender care :)

  8. I love cucumbers too. My grandpa taught me how to eat a cuke ;-) just like how you were taught.
I hope Mr. Lizard eats up the bugs. I do the same for toads in my garden. I keep a little saucer of water for them. Eat up Mr. Lizard and Mr. Toad.

Oh yes, I put salt on everything! Veggies of course. But apples and pears too.

Hooray for getting that outside work done, between rain drops!

You are always so wound up! Your energy just about boooools-me-over!

    Wishing non-cloudy skies!

  13. This is scary- Told you our families could be interchangeable! We put salt on EVERYTHING. My daddy wore overalls and he carried a salt shaker in the bib. We would pull tomatoes right off the vines -take a big bite then salt it down and continue to eat.We would eat zucchini squash the same way. Man, I miss my garden:-( What is happening to your pond is what my daddy would call "turning over". After a big rain he would announce that the water had "turned over" and we would have to wait till it cleared up. Have a wonderful evening. Give the animals hugs and kisses from Texas.

  14. I love fresh little cucumbers right out of the garden too. And for me it's white bread, butter and salt on my slices of tomato sandwich.

  15. I love cucumbers from the garden!! They are the best with salt. Granny used to slice them up with a sweet onion and vinegar and oil with a touch of sugar. Love them that way to.
    Love you bunches!

  16. We used to put salt on tart apples as a kid. I put salt on all vegetables. Larry doesn't use it at all. I'm the one with the lowest blood pressure, and it is quite low. Once again I'll say it, your garden seems so early!! We have a couple of garter snakes in one veggie garden. I don't like snakes, but I read up on them and it said one of the things they eat are slugs, and I've noticed hardly any slugs up there, so I hope the snakes stay. You may hear me scream once in a while though!

  17. We put salt on watermelon when I was growing up. Haven't done that in ages. But then we also had watermelon fights and contests to see how far we could spit the seeds (haven't done that in a long time either). I love that first pic of your pond! It looks so wonderfully peaceful out there.

Nothing like eating things right from the garden. My cucumbers have just been planted to we have a while before we get any yet.
Can't think of another person who would put out water for a lizard. : ) I love your blog!!

  23. I would never walk away, it is a joy to visit and see your happenings for the day. We have been experiencing horizontal rain, something I have never come across before. It has dried up quickly so we are back to trying to get some of the property painted.

  24. I love cucumbers fresh from the garden. They far surpass what is available in the grocery stores all year. My plants are just getting started. No cucumbers to eat yet, but I have high hopes.
Your pond is lovely, even with the red dirt runoff.

  25. Our pond has been muddy too, but I still love it! Yours is still just beautiful, even if the water isn't crystal clear. The small daily showers we have had this week have put me behind on outside work, so... here we go again. Have a wonderful week!

  26. You do have some bright orange mud! Very colorful. I have lots of blossoms but no cukes yet and I think I planted mine before you did. Slowpokes!

  30. My late mother and I loved mater biscuits. We have a few cucumber plants this year. Like you say, growing up we put salt on everything. These days we are "learning" to leave off the salt. We keep getting rain here in n. GA too. Almost every day!
    God bless your evening. xoxo
