A really weird story

Dumperoo watches for Poppy or me to sit down for a minute, then takes advantage of a nice soft lap to snuggle in.

Poppy sits in the swing while I cook supper, but this time Eli beat him to it. What we need around here is more animals. Actually, that would be fine with me. :)

Here's a really weird, but true, story...

You all probably know by now that Poppy is a hunter. Deer season is just around the corner, in fact, black powder season comes in next week. Anyhow, Poppy has been busy busy getting things ready, pulling out hunting clothes, boots, caps, various scents, gloves, masks, coats...you name it...stuff that will cover the cedar chest in our bedroom until next spring when turkey season comes in.

Anyhow, back to the story. Last Friday he told me he would be back in a little while, that he was going to ride his four-wheeler around and check out his deer spots.

Before I could turn around good, he was coming back in the front door. Said when he cranked his four-wheeler, it made a horrible bumping and knocking noise and would hardly move when he tried to back it out from under the shelter. He had to really give it the gas to get it to move any at all. Poppy got on the phone and called Scott, a mechanic who works on four-wheelers . Bring it in Monday, Scott said.

So, Monday morning I am out helping Poppy load the four-wheeler onto the trailer hooked up to the truck. I was given instructions on how to immediately turn the crank to tighten the winch as soon as the four-wheeler was on the trailer. All loaded, done and done, Poppy pulled away...and I had a minute's peace. :)

We didn't hear from Scott until yesterday. The motor is okay said Scott. The problem was a big black snake living inside there, and when you cranked the motor, well, you shredded that black snake to pieces. Oh my gosh, I said, poor black snake. Poor poor black snake. Bet you, that was something a mechanic rarely sees.  Okay, enough of that story!

While plundering around in the sewing room, I found several pieces of cute Halloween fabric. This will be my newest addition to the bonnet shop...

It turned out kind of cute and I couldn't resist making a small one to match. Maybe I should make more matching sets.

Deb, over at justcats-deb.blogspot.com , I told Smokey that you have been asking about him, but he was too sleepy to sit up for a picture.

Love,
Henny

  1. Yikes, that is quite a story Henny! I love your matching Halloween aprons. Very pretty! Smokey and Deb's cats do look alike don't they?

  2. Last summer, when my husband cranked up the riding mower for the first time, it ran really badly. When he opened it up he found a mouse nest and several dead little mice. He's lucky they didn't chew up his wires!

  5. Oh my, that snake story hit close to home here. We have tons of feral cats in our area and the kittens love to sleep inside the car/truck motors when it's cold. We have to check every time we use our vehicles for unexpected passengers. And as awful as it might be to kill a snake, believe me when you kill a kitten, it brings one to tears. And also... your Smokey looks so much like Deb's Audrey and our Ghost!

  6. Well, with all of your creepy snake stories, I guessed it was a snake right away, so I was not surprised as the story progressed. Just creeped out!
Poppy looks quite militaristic in his hunting gear. I thought camouflage was dangerous in the woods and you could get shot by other hunters who might mistake you for a deer in the bushes. Hope not.
    Smokey's not concerned.

  8. Oh your cats are so sweet. The matching aprons are a great idea, especially with holidays coming soon.

When I was 9 or 10, I sewed little tiny aprons for the dishwashing soap bottles!

  10. Goodness, you have a lot of snake stories. Although I walk around my property with boots on because I am freaked out about stepping on one I still feel so sorry for any creature that has been hurt or killed. Poor thing. But on a lighter note, your apron is so cute. And as far as Smokey goes, I'll take him standing, lying or hanging upside-down.

  11. Scary story. Once had to take my husband's car in, the noise the air conditioner was making was terrible. Turned out a mouse had made nest in it.

  12. When we lived in Kentucky, we had a big old air conditioning unit we called the "mouse blender" for obvious reasons. The repair guy hated the annual cleaning.

  15. That is quite the story!! I don't know much about snakes so I don't even know if Black snakes are poisonous. In any case, that one isn't going anywhere.
Poppy does look very impressive in his gear. Eli looks impressive lying there on the swing like he owns it.

  17. It amazes me how many time you have posted about snakes on your place. I'm so glad that you don't have a prob;em with them. I am just the opposite, they literally drain the blood from my brain. I have actually passed out at the sight of them. I don't consider myself to be a fraidie-cat, but snakes just do it to me. Do you have any suggestions for me to get over this?

  18. I'm back . . . I forgot to tell you how much I like your aprons. The pattern you use is adorable. I am sure they will sell fast.

  20. Ack! What a surprise for the mechanic.
We were sitting on the beach a few nights ago and an eagle was flying in circles over us with a writhing snake it its mouth. We were holding our breath that he didn't drop it! (He didn't. Disappeared over the dunes with it still wiggling away.)
The mother-daughter Halloween aprons are so cute. Someone will love those. Maybe a grandma-granddaughter combo?
