A new baby! and then some other stuff...

The biggest news of this day is little "Addie", my new great granddaughter! Born last evening at 5:39 p.m. I won't steal Lynn's sweet picture of Addie for my blog...since Lynn is Addie's grandma, and that of course, is the highlight of Lynn's blog, Side Tracked. I sure would love to hold this little Addie!

Back to my dull routine...while in Henderson at Tractor Supply a day or so ago, I did make a quick stop at the Salvation Army Thrift Store...

I picked up this picture for $2.00. I love the beautiful heavy frame, and the white kitty is so sweet.

also found three pieces of solid color cotton fabric. These come in handy for lining sunbonnets. The white basket was less than a dollar, fabric pieces .25 each.

always a curious kitty snooping around...

This small porcelain doll was $.49. Sometimes it is hard to tell if something is old or just simply dirty. Her apron and bonnet are stained. I never could walk away from a poor dolly needing a home.

another, not so nosy, kitty sleeping in the sun.

Ironing always, always, gets me to thinking about mama. Mama thought everything needed to be ironed...sheets, pillowcases, towels, washcloths, daddy's boxer shorts...everything. Growing up, Mama would say to me on Saturday morning, if you want do something to help, start ironing the clothes in that basket. All the flat pieces were fun to iron and fold. Shelby probably had to iron some of the harder pieces...well, I'm sorry,  she was older than me. :)

Even into late 1950's Mama was still mixing up starch for  the shirts, blouses, and dresses. After the clothes were brought in from off the clothesline, mama would carry the pile of starched pieces to the kitchen sink, turn the cold water faucet on low and with her hand sprinkle water on each piece of clothing until it was damp. She then rolled each piece into a smooth ball that looked like dough and covered them with a cloth and put them in the refrigerator.  Once the sprinkled clothes were cold, they ironed easier and looked better. I can just hear mama saying, "I've simply got to get the clothes sprinkled and in the refrigerator".  Yep, I remembered all this when I got out my can of spray starch to use on that dresser scarf.

Goodness,  didn't mean to write this much. Poppy is probably waiting for the computer. I'll end this now.  I did want to show you how close little Rosie and Asa have become...

Pardon the mess. I swept the teeny tiny barn twice today. :)

Love,
Henny

  2. I feel the same way about blue and white tea-cups as you do about homeless dolls. I can never leave them behind. :) I'm so happy for little Rosie. How sweet is that. Do you still bottle feed her at nights?

    1. Actually, I am bottle feeding her four times a day. It is so sweet! Rosie gets excited when I bring her bottle of warm milk. Yesterday, when I sat down to feed her, she jumped on top of my head.

  3. I love all of your finds at salvation army. Congratulation on the beautiful new great granddaughter. I do not iron. I only iron when it is so wrinkled it looks terrible and then I don't really know how.

    I love you!

  5. One of my favorite memories is of my Mama hanging laundry on the clothes line and then ironing them. My Daddy's work khakis could have stood by themselves, when she was done! I still use the clothes line and I iron most of my clothes and some of my Mister's. He isn't a fan of starch so I don't use it on his stuff. I'm a bit on the strange side but this Monday morning ritual has always been one of my favorite things to do. I also love washing dishes by hand, although I can't because of eczema. I told you I was weird!

    Grace & Peace

    1. Hey, we must be kind of strange alike...I have never owned a dishwasher. Washing dishes is my favorite of all the housework chores. I still feel like Monday is wash day, and I love hanging clothes out to dry.

  9. I went to Lynn's blog and saw pictures of Addie. She's beautiful. That dresser scarf is beautiful. Did you embroider it? I absolutely hate ironing. I iron almost nothing any more. As they say, been there, done that. And I'm done with it. When my husband was in the army, I had to starch his uniforms and iron them perfectly. I'd actually rub the skin off my hands wringing them out to hang on the line. Give me permanent press now, please. If something in the closet gets rumpled I wet a couple of towels and throw them all n the dryer so the steam will get the wrinkles out.

    1. Hey Peg! Thank you. Addie sure looks sweet. No, I didn't embroider that scarf but I used to love embroidering, and did several dresser scarves. This one came from a thrift store. I can't resist buying old linens. To think of the work that someone did. Oh my goodness, I can't imagine washing and ironing uniforms. I do remember how stiff and perfectly pressed they had to be. Lynn and Andee's dad was in the Air Force and he was particular about his uniform. He had them done at dry cleaners. Guess I couldn't get them stiff enough! I sure don't iron everything now...just what really needs it. I want to remember that about the wet towels. Thank you!

  12. So glad to see Rosie and Asa snuggled up together.
I laughed when I read about your Mom sprinkling your clothes. My Mum still does it. Growing up it was often my job to sprinkle the clothes. My Mum still has her little plastic bottle she had when she got married in the 1950's for sprinkling!
Your items from the thrift store are great finds.

    1. You know, it seems like at one time mama had one of those sprinkling bottles, but I definitely remember her wetting her hand and sprinkling the clothes that way. It's funny to think about now. And you mom still does? That's so neat.

  13. Congratulations on your Great Granddaughter. Love the cat picture! I remember my Mother-in-law ironing just like that. I iron pillowcases and tea towels and that's it.
Looks like Rosie has made a friend.

  16. There is all kinds of sweet news in this post! New baby, and happy baby goat. Wonderful reminiscing over the ironing board. Pretty purchases from a charity shop. All lovely.
I used to do ironing for my mother back in the long ago. We did not iron sheets or underwear, only the stuff that really needed it. Cotton shirts off the line were sprinkled, roll, and let to sit for a bit, then ironed. No refrigerating. That's a new one for me.

  17. That's a sweet story about your mom. The Irish iron everything still today....I am the complete opposite, I own an iron and it hasn't been out of the box in years!! Oh well, there aren't enough hours in the day. I find it hard to believe you are a great grandma - huge congrats to you and to Lynn!!!

  19. So happy for you with a new great grandbaby! I love to rock them, any size. Your daughter must be over the moon. And it cheered my heart so much to see Asa and Rosie cozying up together. How totally charming are they? I have to admit i was stressing over her moving outside after she got so comfortable inside!

  20. Congrats on the new baby. I despair of ever being a great granny. #1 GD doesn't want children, GD2 can't seem to settle down, then there's my GS who is just 17 and the two very young grands. Oh well. There are worse things.
You found lovely treasures at the thrift store,
And, lastly, just wanted to add that my mother did exactly what yours did with the stiff, outside dried clothes. Dampened them and rolled them up but I don't recall if she put them in the fridge. I iron every week and don't really mind doing it. Kind of mindless task.

  23. Congrats on the new great grandchild. I'm despairing of ever being a grandma.
Those are some great things you got at the thrift store.
The white cat picture looks like a white version of Nelson.
Glad the two goats are getting along.
I can remember my mum with the ironing board set up outside and ironing in the sun. Don't know if she was much for using starch or the fridge:)

  24. A great granddaughter, how splendid! I hope you get to hold her soon, for as long as you want! And I can't wait to see a picture. I Remember my mom and grandma ironing, starching, sprinkling clothes and keeping them in the fridge, too. I first got to iron the hankies and pillowcases and I felt so grown up doing it. I still like to iron. Well, maybe not the frilly hard stuff but the everyday stuff, I do. The goats, are adorable together. I'm glad they took to each other and became friends right away. The little one needs a buddy.
