Horses in the neighborhood!

Have you ever heard the old saying, "if you dream about snakes, you've got enemies"? Well, last night I dreamed that as I walked around the side of our house, there lay the biggest black snake I've ever seen. My neighbor Ann killed the snake by stabbing it to death with a knife. I was sad for the snake. I simply must stop eating chocolate/peanut butter ice cream before bedtime!

I was sitting here wondering what to post today when the phone rang. It was Kristine, calling from from the path. She and Robert had stopped in front of the house to show me their newest horse, and darn it, I can not remember his name. You met Josie, the white horse, in an earlier post.

Look at this sweet face, and I love the shape of his head! I've been afraid of horses forever, well since I was about sixteen anyway. It was back then that a horse ran away, with me on it's back. A frightful experience!

Yep, that runaway horse gave my entire family something to laugh about for years. There's a post written about that very nightmare called 'horseback riding'. That was the end of  my riding horses!

Horses are such beautiful creatures. Kristine talked me into walking up really close to these horses. Close enough even to rub their noses and smell that horse smell. I love the way horses smells, the same way I love puppy breath.

Robert and Kristine live in a neat little place much further down in the woods even than where we live. These are good neighbors.

I was excited about raking leaves again today, and got started around 10:00. Poppy worked at the deer processing plant so when he got home at lunchtime I stood the rake against a tree and we ate lunch together. We were up at 4:30 this morning so I am feeling pretty worn out right now.

I dumped three loads of leaves inside the garden and still have more to add. Oops, somebody closed Eli up inside the garden. I'm mighty tired tonight, but there is absolutely nothing that makes me as happy as working outside.

Okay, it's feeling a whole lot like bedtime right now so I will say goodnight.

And, a special thank you to my newest follower, 'Happyone'. Thank you!

Love,
Henny

  1. Hi! I am afraid I wouldn't feel sad about the snake being killed! I dislike snakes so much! The horses look like nice gentle horses and how nice of your neighbors to stop and how you their new horse. If I was up at 4:30a.m. I think I would be headed to bed at 4p.m. in the afternoon!! Poor Eli! Shut in the garden! Nancy

  2. I can understand why you're wary of horses. It's frightening when you're not in control.

I love working outside too. Good to see that you use the leaves to feed your garden too.

  6. What wonderful neighbours you have calling in to share their new horse, who is a real delight. Take care not to overdo things, all that raking cannot be doing your rib much good. Eli as always looks adorable.

  7. I heard somewhere that snakes hate horses and are afraid of them. Is that true or only an old wives tale? If true, maybe you could have your neighbors walk their horses around the place and spread a little manure. When we lived on an acre by a lake, we were over run with very friendly deer (like often on our back patio deer) and we found that if dogs pee all over your property, deer will stay away because they don't like to be around dogs. Have you ever heard these two tales and do you think they're true?

    1. I always thought that horses were afraid of snakes...remember in the old Western's, seeing a horse rare up at the sight of a rattlesnake, throwing the cowboy off his back? If I knew that would work I would get a few scoops of horse manure to spread around. :) I believe that about deer staying away from dogs.

  11. I like horses, but certainly understand being wary of them. I had one run away with me years ago, took me through a gate with a top bar that knocked me flat on the horse's back. We kept horses when our daughter was younger and finally sold them off when she went to college.

  12. I've met some really nice horses on my morning walks. I've never been around them before moving here a couple of years ago.
Sometimes they come up to the fence when I walk by and I pet them. They don't seem to mind that I don't have anything for them to eat. : )

  13. In my opinion, the only good snake is a dead one! I've certainly killed my share of them. Poor Eli! He has the same look my Roy gets when I won't let him inside.

    Grace & Peace.

  15. Those horses look so tame and friendly. I'm kind of afraid of them too, thinking about how they could step on me although as a kid I did ride
( bareback, because we didn't have a saddle). A number of years back we decided to go riding with my daughter and her husband. He had never been on a horse and we laughed ourselves silly because he couldn't control his horse even though he had the oldest, tamest nag ever. How we laughed at him. That probably wasn't very nice of us.

  16. I just had to tell you that I found the post about your runaway horse. You have a way of telling a story that makes a person almost 'see' you flying along holding on for dear life. What an experience!

    1. Thank you so much. You probably could not help but laugh at your husband, not meaning any harm. I'm sure that horse running with me hanging on for dear life was funny to watch too. I didn't hold a grudge. :)
