Sewing pantaloons, and other things

I was in the sewing room Sunday evening. Would you like to see my latest pantaloons? I'm now working on a pair of pink linen bloomers.

It's crazy, but I love wearing these. Pantaloons, a short dress and an apron makes an old fashioned outfit. Just my style! The thrift store is the place to find short simple dresses to wear with pantaloons...

Even a short sundress with a tee shirt looks cute over big pantaloons. (sorry, I have a hard time looking at a camera).

I altered my pattern, making the pantaloons legs wider and shorter, then adding a wide ruffle on the bottom.

Thankfully, the sunshine came back yesterday. The weather report called for sun all this week. Well, it's totally cloudy here right now. It's cold and looks like snow. I am still thinking about filling out an application to become a weatherman. :) Late afternoon yesterday, I did get outside and rake up two more wheelbarrow loads of leaves and dumped them in chicken lot

Karen at wyndsonfarm.blogspot.com commented on my last post about being careful with those strings that come off feed bags. How the string can get tangled around a chicken's foot. I had never thought about that being a danger, but it's good to know. Karen's comment reminded me of another danger from string...

Kinda hard to see it now but this is a needle, still threaded, that was surgically removed from our sweet Dumperoo's stomach...

It was a few years ago...I was in the sewing room hand stitching a sunbonnet. Poppy, packing to go on a hunting trip, began calling me to help find something. I put the bonnet down and went in the kitchen. When I got back to the sewing room and picked up the bonnet I saw that the needle and thread were gone and Dumperoo was sitting there trying to swallow...looking like he was eating fish bones. I grabbed Dumperoo and opened his mouth, and seriously, saw the needle go down his throat. An x-ray at the Vet's office showed that needle. It was right there is Dumper's stomach. It wasn't cheap getting that needle removed, but we would be lost without our Dumperoo.

As Mama would say, I have simply got to get busy. Time is flying this morning! Thank you for looking in. I hope to be back soon.

Love,
Henny

  1. Oh how scary about Dumperoo and the needle. I am glad that you saw what had happened and was able to take care of him before it was worse. It is going to get really cold this week so try to stay warm outside. I love your pantaloons. They look very comfortable they remind me of some pants my mom used to make me. I miss Mama so much making me clothes. I love you to the moon and back.

  3. Working at the vet's office, we were constantly removing objects from animal's stomachs, especially needle and thread. They just love to play with the thread, and fishing hooks were another, playing with the line and then swallowed.
Love those pantaloons, they make a comfortable outfit, not restricted to bending and kneeling.
Your picture is very Edwardian-looking, such a pretty lady !

  5. Love your outfit, do you sell those pantaloons at the fairs ?
I would love to wear them but somehow don't think they'd quite fit in a busy British street !
I hate the camera too - or rather it hates me.

    1. Hey Wean, I used to sell the regular straight white pantaloons. I really don't wear these big pantaloons out shopping or places like that. I do like to dress old fashioned at home though.

    2. I love the idea of teaming short dresses with the pantaloons.
As you say, short dresses are in plentiful supply, sometimes I see some adorable ones and think they are much too young for me, but worn as you do, they would look lovely.

  6. Henny, those are very cute pantaloons, and with the short dresses, they look quite put together and feminine. My Mom just gave me some denim culottes that she is too small for, but I didn't think they were my style. If I put a flounce and some trim on them, and altered the waist, she would probably wear them again. She always looks great, 92 years and still very active. I always dread my pets getting something in their systems that should not be there. Daughter just got a dog a month or so ago, and he has munched on lots of kids toys. The green crayon had a spectacular "outcome". Glad Dumperoo was able to have that needle removed! Stay cozy!

    1. Thank you Pam. Your Mom really might like the culottes with a ruffle, but then maybe not. My Mother didn't like things like that. :) Mama liked the little knit shirts with a collar and three buttons worn with cotton, ironed, slacks. :) It is a constant job looking after animals and keeping them out of trouble!

  7. Your pantaloons look suits you and certainly fits your homespun lifestyle. I like it when people do their own thing.

  10. I'm guessing the pantaloons would be lovely ,floaty and cool in the summer.
Dumperoo's tale gave a me a scare! I'm always nervous when I see people using cocktail sticks when animals are around,a friend interned at a vet office, her first case was a dog who'd swallowed a cocktail stick..the damage that thing caused the dogs intestines!

    1. Oh, that sounds horrible! I worry about toothpicks too. It's so easy to forget and lay things down that an animal can get hurt with.

  15. Those pantaloons must be just the thing - loose and airy - on a hot southern day.
So glad the Dumperoo story had a happy ending. We're temporarily (until spring) catless and this was the first Christmas in years and years that I didn't have to police the ribbon and turn some presents upside down until they were opened!

    1. So you might get another kitty in the spring? I hope so. It is a full time job picking up after a cat, well until they are grown anyway. :)

  16. You would be needing long underwear under your Polarfleece pantaloons today if you lived where I do! The windchill was -30 to -40. You look very old-fashioned in your swing.

    1. I'm telling you...I don't know how you deal with that cold. That is terrible!! It was 11 degrees when I went out to feed the animals this morning and I could hardly stand it! Hope it warms up some, especially where you are.

  17. Glad Dumperoo survived the needle incident. Those crazy cats.
Re the ball of string, actually I meant that I thought that was a good idea. If the string gets wrapped on the ball as soon as it is pulled off the bag, there is no way it can end up around a chicken foot.
I have been digging in our manure pile, and yesterday came across one of those strings in it. It's been there a few years, and I did manage to be able to break that one, but it wasn't easy.
