A bunch of empty buckets

Poppy is at work this Saturday morning. The rain is falling again, and here I sit with my bowl of oatmeal at the computer with absolutely nothing interesting to talk about. How do you like your oatmeal? Mine? Hot, with brown sugar, walnuts, and a little milk.

All the feed buckets are empty this morning so a trip to town is first on my list of things to do. It's rare that we run out of everything at once!  Have you seen the row of feed buckets in my tiny little pantry...

And opposite the wall with the buckets are shelves with granite ware and the old pots I love...

It's kinda fun to get a peek into someone's junk room/pantry/laundry room.  I remember my Aunt Berlie's pantry. It was a step down from the kitchen floor and the old wooden door leading into the pantry stayed closed. It was cold in the pantry. Nails in the back of the pantry door held aprons, a broom and a sack that held paper bags. Aunt Berlie called paper bags, "paper pokes".  I loved spending nights with her...staying up late, sometimes til 11:00 p.m. working on a puzzle.

Okay, I am headed to town now. Gosh, getting home and unloading 50 lbs. each of corn, scratch, laying mash, goat feed, and 20lbs. of bird seed, and a few groceries sounds like fun. Maybe I won't even buy feed. Maybe I'll just keep driving and not come home. We'll see. Just kidding. :)

Dumperoo was sure resting good here...

Thank you for listening again.

Love,
Henny

    1. Oatmeal your way would not be fattening. I could use that. :)

  2. I liked my porridge made with milk and raisins. More milk, plus some sliced banana, and some yogurt added on top. Right now I'm on a 30 day food plan that has no dairy, sugar or grains, among other things. I'll get a blog post done eventually.
Love your old pots, I have a few similar ones. Do you keep all your animal feed in the pantry, and carry some out each day?

    1. I love the word "porridge". I've got to try my porridge your way. That sounds really good. I do keep all the feed there. I have a feed bucket filled with those large yogurt cups so I can carry out some of all the feed. The laying mash is in a large feeder inside the chicken house. I'm interested in hearing about your 30 day food plan.

  3. So many mouths to feed there Henny, I don't like running out of cat food, the cats want to tackle me every time I walk into the kitchen !
Love those enamelware bowls and pitchers, timeless, and so beautiful.

    1. I know what you mean about the cat food. Bickett gets really angry if we run out. He doesn't give up either! :)

  4. Wow, you better keep those food buckets full. If all those animals turned against you it definitely wouldn't be pretty!

  5. My relatives from the Ozarks always used the word poke for a sack, too. Reading this made me wonder about the word, so I looked it up. (I love the ease of doing that with the internet!) The phrase 'pig in a poke' is an old, old one relating to a poke sack. Even the word pocket probably derived from the work poket (French). The English version has been around for almost a thousand years. It's easy to learn something new every day. It's rainy here, too, in the St. Louis area. But at least it's just rain. We had a little sleet last night. The weather radar last night looked like it was exploding with color of storms heading across the country south of us. Sorry to say they were probably headed your way.

    1. That is interesting. I've heard the phrase 'pig in a poke'. Glad you looked it up. I'll have to read about that too. It is supposed to warm up over night here and be thunderstorms tomorrow. The high could be in the 70's. Isn't that strange! Then a cold front.

  6. I love your old water pictures. I have some pottery ones but I would love to have more. I just love them. Be careful with your back unloading all that feed. Just think though you will not have to work out. Oh well. I need to work out and get back on a diet or healthy living routine myself.

    Love you

    1. Moving feed bags is like working out! :) I don't try to bring those bags up the steps anymore. I carry two feed buckets and a scoop and empty the bags there at the car. Then I can bring in two 25 lb. buckets. That's easier. :) Love you Vicki!

  7. Oatmeal or porridge as I know it ...made with (non dairy) milk with a drizzle of maple syrup. In Scotland we used to have it with brown sugar and a wee nip of whisky!
    It's snowing here...freezing rain overnight,then rain/snow tomorrow...it couldn't make up it's mind.

    1. There's that word "porridge" again. I love that word! I definitely want to try it with maple syrup and pecans (like Cynthia said). I'm not sure about the wee nip of whisky...it only takes a wee nip for me! :)

  8. Maple syrup and pecans is the best way to go with oatmeal! For everyday, milk and brown sugar will do.
Maybe Poppy will unload for you if you "forget" the feed in the car. ;-)

    1. Okay, I have both maple syrup and pecans, so I'm giving it a try. That does sound good! I have done that before..."oh darn, I forgot, all that feed is still in the car"! :)

  9. That's it - I'm having oatmeal for breakfast tomorrow. Usually I have it with cinnamon (good for you in some way I've forgotten), brown sugar, walnuts. But Cynthia just reminded me of maple syrup and pecans!
I envy you your pantry, but not your errand of feed for the multitudes.
Snow just started here, although it's supposed to be raining and in the 50s tomorrow, so we're not getting too excited.

  11. It would never do for all these critters to get the hungries all at the same time. Paper pokes? Now that's a new one. I like hot oatmeal with molasses.

    1. Now that I have never heard about oatmeal with molasses. I do like molasses and have a jar in the cabinet. I may have to try it. Maybe. :)

  12. I loved seeing inside your pantry! My pantry is not nearly so interesting.
While I don't dislike oatmeal, I never eat it anymore.

The row of feed buckets made me feel a little sad, I know keeping animals is hard work, but I miss mine so much.
Perhaps one day I'll get my life back eh ?
