Burrr! Another cold market day!

Okay, I really need to post a little something here. Don't want folks thinking I blew away. Can it really be four days since I looked at my blog!

Lynn and I were visiting vendors at the Wake Forest Farmer's Market again today, and guess what happened! Snow! And not just snow! We had snow, sleet, and freezing rain! The entire time! What is it with me and markets? It was really a cold miserable day at the market. Anyway, a day with Lynn is always fun. I sold only three dolls today. Nothing else. Lynn had a few sales too.

Being a vendor at the farmer's market is really fun. It is work, but fun. I miss being there. Lynn and I are thinking about maybe doing it again...part time anyway...if things can be worked out. Selling crafts is different from selling vegetables or eggs. Customers are simply not going to rush out to buy an apron or a doll every Saturday. Selling craft items one week a month, now that would be good. :)

Poppy and I will be driving to Yorktown on Christmas morning to spend the day with Andee, Todd, and Madison. Looking forward to that!

Not much of a post here, but hopefully I will be back soon, with more...better stuff! :)

Love,
Henny

  1. It is lots of work to be a vendor. I did that one sale in November and that will be it until summer...then who knows. I like to visit all the other vendors and see their wares:)

  2. I sold books for the Nature Center on Thur. It's lots of fun even if we don't sell much.

    1. I've always thought too that it was a fun job. Even if nothing sells.

  4. Until recently, I had a regular craft stall and also a unit in an antique centre. Both took up lots of time (and money in rental fees, insurance etc.) I have now come out of both because they just weren't paying. As you said people don't buy craft items or antique items on a regular basis and it is hard to make ends meet. I found I was working just to pay my rents for the units so the only one who was winning was the owner of the centre. I couldn't afford to do that.
I'm glad to hear you have made some sales though, it's fun to make stuff though isn't it even if they don't sell.

    1. Wean, what a surprise. It is so good to hear from you! Lynn and I have tried renting a booth or space together and even together we didn't make enough to pay the rent each month. Selling at the market once a month would be good. Thank you visiting. I've missed you. Hope you have a Merry Christmas.

  6. Sounds like Christmas things are coming together for you. I can see how you might feel a bit behind what with going to those craft shows. Unfortunately right before the holiday is a likely time for shoppers to find your goods. The weather there however sounds positively foul! Hope you wore your woolies.

I've got all our out of town presents mailed off and delivered (and hopefully not stolen off the various porches) and the in town presents all wrapped and distributed. Still have Christmas cards yet to write but those can be put off if need be till after the Christmas rush. I always try to write something in each one and for some this is that once a year thing and they turn into sagas so it takes awhile.

My grocery list is made and tomorrow I will get the last minute things needed and start doing some preparations for Christmas dinner. I am going to follow your precedent and not do some of the traditional things like marshmallow topped sweet potatoes that none of us really like anyway and make some things that are favorites along with ham, cornbread dressing, green beans, and mashed potatoes for sure.

Safe travel and I hope your Christmas is merry and bright.

    1. Gosh, You've done a lot! Your meal sounds good. I'm happy my daughter will be cooking this Christmas. I am baking the ham and taking it with us. I like to write something in the cards too, but just a work or two. :) Victoria, hope you all have a very merry Christmas!

  7. Brrr, you are brave to stand outside in all that weather! It's nice you can enjoy time with your sister -- and sell a few things, too.

    1. Having someone you love to be with helps you tolerate the weather. Merry Christmas Cynthia!

  8. Dear Henny,
You sure have had the worst weather for selling crafts and such! It would be tough to watch over your tables without being able to run around much to keep warm. And the customers might be fewer. Selling hot cocoa and woolen hats would be the ticket!
Can Eli go with you for your Christmas visit? Maybe he will be your guard dog at home. Best to all!

    1. There was a lady selling hot cocoa at her booth and she was very busy! Dan and I had planned to take Eli with us, but lately he doesn't like to ride. He drools, like he is getting sick. There is a kennel about five miles from our house, operated by the same sweet girl who grooms Eli, so we plan to leave him there. If we can part from him! :) We really wanted Eli to go with us. Merry Christmas Pam!

  10. I had several customers at the last few markets looking for Christmas presents for a $10 and under gift exchange. I had done a few jam gift packs, two jars in a box or basket, and they were perfect for that sort of thing, so I sold all those. I've enjoyed reading about your times at the market, so it will be even more fun to read if you go more often. Maybe in summer you can take extra vegetables or eggs? Or flowers? My booth has the most variety of 'stuff' at any market I've been to. Eggs, jam, vegetables, sewing, flowers, and whatever else I can round up:)

    1. I had thought about how interesting your table at the market must be. Seems like that would bring in more people. You are a busy, hard working lady! I admire you. I would love to do the markets again. There are never enough eggs at our market. Customers arrive early to grab the eggs. Thanks Karen!
