A crazy Sunday and now Monday

Once again we have leaves covering the ground. Leaves as far as the eye can see.

When I have nothing else to talk about, there is always the weather. The heat is off and the back door is standing open this morning. There is so much I need to do outside. A few good weather days would be nice...

Eli gave me a scare yesterday. He is fine, but let me say this...there will be no more big ten dollar bones brought into this house. After a call to Quail Ridge Animal Hospital in Raleigh, I made a trip in to town to buy a bottle of Miralax. A ten dollar bottle of Miralax just for a one, half a teaspoon dose. Thankfully, no emergency visit was necessary!

I settled down after Eli scared me half to death only to realize that we have no running water in the house. Why does everything wait until Sunday to happen? Nobody comes out to do work like that on the weekend. Especially not on a Sunday. We get our water from a well. Something probably gone haywire with the pump.

So then this morning I find this little fellow. He somehow got outside the safety of the pen and spent the night alone in the cold, dark, and rain. I found him this morning, very cold and lifeless. I have him in my lap wrapped in a warm tee shirt as I type.

I'm thinking he will be okay once he warms up. It surprises me that nothing caught him during the night.

So this is my Monday morning...waiting for the well drilling, pump repair people to get here while carrying around a cold baby guinea wrapped in warm cloths in one hand and doing what little I can with the other. The house is a mess and the dish pan is running over with dishes from supper last night.

The baby has warmed up. The microwave is perfect for warming blankets. I mixed a little start n' grow with warm water and actually got the baby to swallow a drop or two from the tip of a spoon...

Guess I had better get busy. Thank you for visiting.

Love,
Henny

    1. Well I panic big time when I think an animal is in trouble. Eli was so constipated he could not use the bathroom. He whined and cried and ran from place to place. When he finally did go, it was small and dry and crumbly with a little bright red blood mixed in. I was so afraid there was a piece of bone stuck somewhere. We thought those large baked bones sold in the grocery store, for dogs, were safe. I want to look at the site that Karen mentioned in her comment below. Both you and Karen know about dogs and I trust what you say. Do you buy those bones? Thanks!

    2. No, my dogs don't get any cooked or smoked bones, only raw ones. From reading that article I sent, it sounds like even raw bones could cause trouble in a dog that doesn't have the right ph level in their gut. I don't feed any kibble, just raw food consisting of bones, meat and organs.

  2. Glad Eli is okay. I'm guessing he had a blockage. I've often wondered (since I feed the dogs raw) was how the large chunks of bone that Luna swallows, come out the other end as powder. I came across this fascinating article http://www.vetsallnatural.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=107&Itemid=113
For your info only, not trying to push anything on you.
I'm glad the guinea is going to be okay, fingers crossed. It sure has feathered out now. It's amazing how animals can seem to come back from the dead like that.

    1. Oh, believe me, I appreciate any info you offer when it comes to taking care of dogs. I was so afraid Eli had a bone stuck. I put the little guinea back with the others and he started walking and pecking at the ground. He probably doesn't remember what happened. :) I'm going to look at the web site you mentioned. Thank you!

  3. Good thing you found the poor guinea, I sure hope it gets back to normal. And Eli is now likely to be able to chomp any bone into pieces. Not too good for doggie digestion, right? I'm glad he is ok now. All the best wishes for a very happy Thanksgiving to all of your family!

  4. Well, just think------ all this could have happened on Thanksgiving day which generally is a busy time without a half dead guinea baby, sick dog and no water. It could have been much worse.

Good to know that everyone (you included) are doing okay.

  6. Kane used to love rawhide bones but after reading how they can get stuck in the gut and cause damage I took him off all bones years ago. I give him a little sausage stick to munch on now for a treat. I'm glad Eli is ok. And, that darling little guinea, too. Can you imagine it being outside alone all night. The poor thing. Thanks for being such a good nurse to it. Deb

    1. No more bones here either. No, I can't imagine that baby guinea alone all night with so many wild animals out there. He is fine now. :)
