A wet soggy day before Thanksgiving

Henny Penny here...

reporting that everything is up and running again at Henny Penny Lane. We have running water, inside and outside. That's right. It is raining cats and dogs outside, or as mama used to say, "it is simply pouring"! By the way, have I mentioned that we have leaves that need to be raked? :)

Back to the water situation...it was close to noon before the well digging, pump repair service people got here on Monday.  Of course, it was no small problem. The pump in the well had to be replaced and also the pressure switch on the tank under the house. The old well cover fell apart when it was lifted off the well and I couldn't be happier about that...

I hate those old miniature wishing wells that don't look real. Poppy says he is having someone build us another. I spoke up right quick and said well tell him to build it square and use wide boards and build a top with an overhang and a tin roof and a roller for hanging the old well bucket. If it doesn't look authentic, I don't want it! I can't wait to light a fire under this pile of stuff.

Remember way back before everybody had inside plumbing how folks kept a bucket of freshly drawn well water with a dipper nearby? I borrowed this picture from the neatest blog that I happened upon,  babs-upstairsdownstairs.blogspot.com. I plan to visit her again and read more...

I especially remember drinking water from a well bucket and dipper when we would visit my Aunt Macy and Uncle Vester. They kept a bucket of fresh well water on a shelf on their front porch and the dipper hung from a nail nearby. There was also a pan...one kinda like this...

for washing up and there was also a towel hung from another nail. Those truly were the good times. Oh well, moving on to more modern times.

A moth flew in when the door was opened this morning. Bickett and Dumper Roo went crazy...

The moth lit on the sofa. See the black spot down near the floor. Bickett doesn't see it...

Oh this rain! The pond is running over again and the pier is completely under water. Guess it's just as well that we have no family coming for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. Yep, just Poppy and me. Still, I plan to bake a turkey, have dressing, broccoli casserole, sweet potato casserole, cranberry sauce, collards, and rolls. Poppy said since it is just the two of us, let's have only our favorite dishes. No need making mashed potatoes and gravy, or green beans and corn. We have those things enough anyway. So, I will wish all of you a happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for stopping by.

Love,
Henny

  1. I'm glad you got your water back; I was wondering about it yesterday. My grandparents had no water or electricity in the house and we visited for 2 weeks every summer. They had a bucket and dipper on a table in the kitchen area and a dishpan just like that. I hope you two have a happy Thanksgiving, hopefully a dry one. Those storm reports on TV sure make it look nasty on the eastern side of the country. But better rain than snow. We had an inch of rain a few days ago and that would have been 10 inches of snow if it had been colder. We got lucky.

    1. Hey Peg! Wonder if we could stand two weeks now drinking from a bucket with a dipper? You probably loved those two weeks back then.

  2. I'm sure I say 'it's simply pouring' too! (or something very similar at least) And it has been pouring a lot just lately. We had nearly 1 1/2 inches of rain yesterday, and could get up to another three inches before the weekend. Then a couple of cold days, and then back to the wet again. Your dinner menu sounds delicious. Glad you have your water back! Happy Thanksgiving:)

  3. Good to hear you have water! Yes I remember that bucket and the dipper. My goodness you will have wet leaves now...at least they won't blow anywhere! You make dressing...up here we usually call it stuffing. I am certain I have never had collards. You will have to share your sweet potato and broccoli casserole recipes...we call them hotdishes. Up here if we make sweet potatoes I bake them them skin them out and put the flesh in a dish and top with butter and brown sugar and then warm. Broccoli we usually just eat cooked plain or with some cheese on top:)

    1. I will post those two recipes. You really need to try both, especially if you like sweet potatoes with brown sugar and if you like broccoli. It would be fun to know what you think. I need to send you a bowl of collards! :)

  5. I do remember the bucket with a dipper. I also remember the out house LOL and chamber pot ROFL...When I first started living with my grandparents, they didn't have a indoor bathroom. They got one not long after. I liked helping to pull the long metal tube up the well and then pulling the release and all the water would coming rushing out of it LOL into the bucket. I don't know what that metal tube was called. They did have running water in the house in the kitchen. But me and Grandma would go out and pull that tube and get a bucket of water anyway LOL.
She also had one of those ringer washing machine which of course just fascinated me! She got a regular set when they added on the indoor bathroom. I must admit, I do like a indoor bathroom and running water in my home LOL. Where those are some good memories some modern things I have become very fond of LOL. Is that you in the first photo,if so just lovely. I love hair up like that! How do you get it up like that? I have tried to get mine like that but it never looks that way. It maybe because my hair is not real thick. Its long enough but maybe not thick enough.

    1. Hey Texan! I talk about those being the good times, but I'm sure it wouldn't take long before I was wishing for running water and a bathroom again. I remember those cold dark outhouses too, with spiders and wasp nests. :) That is me in the picture, and thank you. I love hair put up like that too and it is rare that I get my hair to go up right. If you will Google "Gibson Girl hair styles" there is a tutorial done by this beautiful girl that speaks with a British accent. She give the most perfect instructions. Makes me sick that she can do it so easy with her hair. Watch it and see what you think. I love all the old fashioned looks.

  6. I'm glad you got your water back before it was time to start cooking your Thanksgiving meal. I was planning to be on my way to my sister's today but we are having a snowstorm instead and I am stuck at home. It's a 5+ hour trip so I may lea every early tomorrow, if the roads have been cleared. Happy Thanksgiving!

  8. I do remember us having a hand pump for our water when I was quite young. We had to heart water on the wood stove to pour into a small enamel tub for bathing. I call it rustic and nostalgic, but hardly the good ole days.
I love it that you are making your favorite traditional food for just the two of you. I can just imagine that cabin of yours full of good smells and love.

  10. Hi Henny - Enjoyed this post. My grandmother always had an enamel cup at her old well and a granite bowl much like the one you show in her kitchen. I always loved her big summer kitchen at the farm. That is where we are now building a tiny dwelling until next summer. We will build the main house then. I love your hair in the photo. My grandmother wore it the same although hers was pure white. :) Happy Thanksgiving to you, Poppy and all the fur-babies. Hugs, Deb

  13. You bring back memories when you tell of the pail and the dipper. what you didn't say was that everybody used the same dipper to drink out of and it wasn't washed in between! I'm not sure how often the dipper was washed.

    1. Hey Red! You know I had never thought about that. People these days are so worried about germs! Most of my aunts and uncles back in those days in the country, had eight or nine children. Imagine them all dipping and drinking from that bucket. I'll bet the dipper was never washed! :)
