Me and nut trees

While posting yesterday, the sun came out!!  It sure did!!  Thinking about my list of things to be done outside, I left the computer immediately!!   The day turned out to be beautiful!!  I just don't know about planning my life around what the weather people say!! Poppy says he just might fill out an application to be a weather man!! :)

All that excitement over the almond trees...well I was pulling weeds from some blackberry plants I had in pots and thought, what is this big weed???  I pulled it up and there was a black walnut on the roots...no kidding!!!  I have no idea where a black walnut came from...

What is it with me and nut trees...nuts maybe???  Back when Mama was still living alone in her home, I was pulling weeds in her flower bed and pulled up two "weeds" with pecans attached...I brought these home and planted them on the hill above the pond.  This was probably 14 years ago.  These pecan trees have been slow slow growing and I'm wondering if I will ever see a pecan.  That was back when everything I planted died.  I spent 15 years killing plants before I ever got anything to grow!!!  I learned the hard way, you can't stick a plant in a hole in clay and expect it to grow.  I've pushed many a wheelbarrow load of rich soil, old straw, and stuff from the chicken house and dumped it into the yard...Sometimes you've got to change the color of the soil if you want anything to grow.

I added a little side shelf to the potting bench.  By the way, I am enjoying using this place to work!!  The bare ground around needs something.  Maybe pinestraw, until the grass or moss takes over??

I'm really wound up this morning.  Better get busy.  Thank you for looking in..

Love,
Henny Penny

  1. Dear Henny,
Poppy SHOULD apply to be the weatherman. Maybe he could steer us towards The Sunny Side, and stay away from It's Raining Again Blvd!

After supper tonight the family was all ready to go on a little jaunt around the neighborhood. You could see, literally see, yellow poofs of pollen leaving the trees as the wind blew. Next thing you know, it was raining. Again. We turned around and came home.

Tomorrow is the twenty mile bike hike in which Middle Child and I are supposed to be participating. I would be much more enthused were it not so drippy and wet. I'll try to get in the spirit of things, so as not to dampen the frivolity.

We have lots of clay here too. I have worked and worked to get it so I can grow something in it.

The side board is a handy addition to your potting area.

    Love,
    Jen

    1. Dear Jenny,
Oh my, I think I know how you feel. Wasn't it just last week you were dealing with snow?? Now rain and pollen!! Our pollen is about gone. I pulled up 3 dead tomato plants and 1 pepper plant from the garden today. Its just been too wet and too cold for a garden. Also when the sun came out yesterday, the cabbage plants wilted. Probably in shock. Maybe things will level off soon. Keep encouraged. I will be thinking about you tomorrow. Hope you both enjoy the bike hike.

    2. Dear Jen,
I just noticed that I typed Jenny instead of Jen. I'm sorry. I have been emailing a Jenny about the bonnets I make. Again, I'm sorry..

  2. I just love the potting bench. I think it's awesome that you put it together with stuff you already had. :)

  3. Hey Lesa, Thank you. That's what I have to do most of the time, but it's fun.

  4. Dear Henny,
You need not apologize for calling me 'Jenny' instead of Jen. My Grammy used to call me that after a favorite teacher she had had on the prairie when she was a young woman. Jenny Wagonrod, I kid you not.

The bike hike was a great success. It was about an hour away. It rained all the way down. The good Lord held off the rain during the event. We had a hotdog cookout waiting for us in the park before turning back for the second half of the ride. It was so beautiful. We saw a freshly fallen log that was chewed by the beavers. The river was very full. After we loaded all the bikes up and headed back, the skies poured forth again. Isn't that something?

Do you trudge through the forest and find morel mushrooms where you live? I'm very fond of them, but have yet to see any this spring. :(

Off to hit the hay. I will sleep like a rock tonight!
    Love,
    Jen

    1. Dear Jen,
I can't believe I am just seeing your comment!!! So glad your bike hike turned out good and you enjoyed it. And the rain, waiting for you to finish and pack up! That is amazing! I love to trudge through the forest, but I have never looked for mushrooms. I'll have to read about morel mushrooms and then look for some. That would be fun. I like the name Jenny Wagonrod! :)

      Love,
      Henny
