Eli's Birthday Bone

Guess who has a birthday today...Baby Eli is one year old!

A birthday bone, candle and all...

I'll just take my bone...

His puppy days went by way too fast. He was just a sweet little ball of fur...

Those little feet...

Eli still loves his bear...

Happy Birthday, Eli!

I get so disgusted with myself! Friends, I am computer illiterate. I am...

Smokey could do a better job.

If I don't respond to a comment or if I don't find an email from any of you on my blog site, or if I do something really stupid, please don't take it personally. You know what confuses me most? Google+ and Google Circles! Just wanted to mention this. :)

I could seriously use another blogging lesson...Lynn, are you out there?

Thank you for visiting. Hope you will come back.

The old dust rag and other stuff

What a gloomy rainy Monday we have here. The pier is totally under water again. I would take a picture but by now you've all seen that!

I've made myself...made myself...vacuum the floors and clean one bathroom. That's not saying a lot in this teeny tiny house. I got the old oily dust rag out of the old coffee can and walked around with it for a while...never did dust anything. Sorry, but my heart is just not into dusting. My heart is never into dusting. Is this part of getting old? That you don't want to dust anymore and that you really don't care if the entire house needs dusting? If Mama could hear me, she would say, "I would be ashamed of myself if I were you".

Dumperoo knows how to cope with a rainy Monday...

Smokey stretched out on Poppy's side of the bed looking mighty long and sleek...

Wasn't it last year about this time that Poppy and I went to Mr. Murphy's farm to buy feed? It was cold and cloudy that day too, but a fun day and the day we met Mr. Murphy's bashful bull...

A little offer of hay from one of the workers brought him from behind the barn...

Okay, I'm grappling for something to talk about here so I'll hush for now. Might even pull out the dust rag again. Three more days of rain then I can get back outside, back to normal. Will you all come back? Thank you! See you soon.

Henny

I'll take the lace

Another weekend is almost over. Don't the days fly? I've just finished the dishes. Poppy is watching another football game so I have a minute on the computer.

There is something about that new tablecloth that just doesn't sit right with me. I covered it with an old lace cloth and it totally changed my mood...

Tomorrow I'll take the flowered cloth off the table and go with the lace. I love lace and having to live with deer heads and turkey tails all over the other walls...well I need "feminine" in the dining room. What would I do without my sewing room and dining room!

Poppy said earlier today, wonder why we don't have as many birds this winter. Remember last winter? The ground under the feeder would be covered with birds, and it was not unusual to count ten to twelve Cardinals around the feeders. Wonder if this could have anything to do with the declining bird population...

What bird, in it's right mind, would stop here to eat...

Smokey likes coming in the house but, he loves being outside too. He's a tree climber, that's for sure!

Talking with my neighbor on the phone today, she mentioned that her husband had been raking up pine straw from their yard and hauling it away. Beautiful pine straw! Oh my goodness! Wonder if he would let me haul it away for him...like into my yard??? She said, you just hold on a minute. Next thing I knew Fred was backing into the driveway with a full size pick-up truck load of clean beautiful pine straw. All mine! I am so excited! Don't know why I didn't take a picture...here's a tiny corner view. It is a massive heap of pine needles...

Guess I won't be working outside tomorrow. The weatherman says rain...maybe even two inches, then more rain Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. :(

Okay, I can hear Poppy stirring around. I'll end this now. Thanks for listening. Hope to be back soon!

Pink dishes and a few animals

A quarter for this old towel at the thrift shop and I like it...

I was admiring this little towel while eating my oatmeal this morning, and thinking about mama. The little pitcher holding the tiny little glass spoons belonged to mama. Something we found at a thrift shop while out shopping together several years ago. Mama loved little pitchers and used to collect them. Andee gave me the glass measuring spoons.

This small pitcher came from a thrift shop and the larger one, another gift from Andee...

I'm wondering, are the old pink dishes called "pink willow" like the "Blue Willow" china...

Anyhow, all of these pink dishes are odds and ends found at thrift shops. I need dinner plates and cups to be able to use these dishes.

When Andee and Todd were stationed in Germany, Andee shopped at a place called "the dead man's store" (I believe that's the right name). She bought so many beautiful things and lots of the pink willow dishes.

I have a weakness for dishes and can't resist bringing home odd pieces. I also love old cupboards and wish there was room in the cabin for this antique cupboard cousin Pat gave me. I would love to fill it with old dishes.

Animal pictures for the day. Smokey in Poppy's chair again...

Always close to his big buddy.  Smokey is gaining weight. Can you tell?

Weetie on guard. Dozing. Always with one ear up and one ear down..

Poor baby. This is not prison. Just waiting for mama to let the chickens out. She will be right back...

Better get up from this computer and get busy. I need exercise today and hope to get it by raking leaves and moving some stuff out of the yard. Need to first finish the house work. yuk!.

Hope to be back soon and thank you for stopping by.

Love,
Henny

Thawing out water bowls and dreaming

Poppy yelled to me early yesterday morning and said, you need to take the camera and go out on the back porch. I said, what's out there? Well, turns out it was the sky in all it's glory...

That cold cold windy weather has now spread over North Carolina! Burrr!!!! I've been in and out today making sure the animals have water to drink...it freezes so quick!

During my "in" time today I've been sewing on a new tablecloth...

I'm simply tired of that old red plaid, dollar a yard, flannel tablecloth that's been on the table. I made it several years ago. What I really want is a dark brick red...heavy, woven, homespun, beautiful tablecloth. Can't you just picture it? Do you ever dream about having the money to go out and buy the things you love? I do.

Brick red and gold are my favorite colors for the cabin, so I don't know how long I can live with this flowered cloth, even though it's a nice heavy fabric. In the pictures the fabric has more of a green tint...and I am not a green person. I don't care for green except in the yard. :) Actually the fabric is more of a gold color with deep rose colored flowers.

There are so many changes I would love to make in the cabin. The teeny tiny kitchen area for example...

How about a red brick kitchen floor and dark brown cabinets...walnut cabinets? Or a dark wood floor...wide boards...oh, and granite counter tops. Poppy and I settled for a lot of less expensive things when the cabin was build in the 80's...in order to even build a cabin! We were so happy and excited. I would have settled for apple crates for cabinets at the time!

Oh well, as long as my sewing machine holds up...

Better get busy. Thank you for visiting. :)

Henny

Sewing pantaloons, and other things

I was in the sewing room Sunday evening. Would you like to see my latest pantaloons? I'm now working on a pair of pink linen bloomers.

It's crazy, but I love wearing these. Pantaloons, a short dress and an apron makes an old fashioned outfit. Just my style! The thrift store is the place to find short simple dresses to wear with pantaloons...

Even a short sundress with a tee shirt looks cute over big pantaloons. (sorry, I have a hard time looking at a camera).

I altered my pattern, making the pantaloons legs wider and shorter, then adding a wide ruffle on the bottom.

Thankfully, the sunshine came back yesterday. The weather report called for sun all this week. Well, it's totally cloudy here right now. It's cold and looks like snow. I am still thinking about filling out an application to become a weatherman. :) Late afternoon yesterday, I did get outside and rake up two more wheelbarrow loads of leaves and dumped them in chicken lot

Karen at wyndsonfarm.blogspot.com commented on my last post about being careful with those strings that come off feed bags. How the string can get tangled around a chicken's foot. I had never thought about that being a danger, but it's good to know. Karen's comment reminded me of another danger from string...

Kinda hard to see it now but this is a needle, still threaded, that was surgically removed from our sweet Dumperoo's stomach...

It was a few years ago...I was in the sewing room hand stitching a sunbonnet. Poppy, packing to go on a hunting trip, began calling me to help find something. I put the bonnet down and went in the kitchen. When I got back to the sewing room and picked up the bonnet I saw that the needle and thread were gone and Dumperoo was sitting there trying to swallow...looking like he was eating fish bones. I grabbed Dumperoo and opened his mouth, and seriously, saw the needle go down his throat. An x-ray at the Vet's office showed that needle. It was right there is Dumper's stomach. It wasn't cheap getting that needle removed, but we would be lost without our Dumperoo.

As Mama would say, I have simply got to get busy. Time is flying this morning! Thank you for looking in. I hope to be back soon.

Henny

A bunch of full buckets

I did come home yesterday loaded down with 50 lb. bags of feed. Mama's little Toyota was sitting so low in the back I could have been pulled over on suspicion of hauling moonshine.

Look who was waiting at the door for me...

So, the buckets are full again...

Poppy said, all this for what, two or three eggs a day? Well no! The hens don't lay as much in the wintertime and besides that, it is "all this for the joy of taking care of animals." "A little farm", such as it is.

Plus there were four more strings to add to my ball of strings. I have saved every string off every feed bag since we moved into the cabin in 1989...

Have you ever given an animal a name and then just couldn't call it by that name. I think the name Smokey is cute as can be, but it doesn't roll off my tongue just right. Smokey thinks his name is "Kitty". Reckon I should change it to "kitty"? Anyway, Kitty has taken over Bickett's stool. He is a brave little thing and determined to be friends with Bickett...

Bickett says he doesn't have time for such nonsense. Playing with Poppy is for us older cats. Oops, excuse the belly. Bickett is a tad overweight, like some other folks around here...

See, if you keep your back feet firmly against the leg of the stool, you can kick off and get away. I been known to kick this stool completely over backwards...

Better get busy. I need to check on the baby guineas again before dark and suppertime if not too far away. We have not had any bad storms today, thankfully. So far, just rain. Thank you for visiting. Hope to be back soon.

Henny
