No siree!! You will not hear me wishing for snow any time soon!! I am scared to death trying to get from the front porch steps to the chicken house door...slick as ice out there!!
No soft, fluffy snow here! We have sleet, and freezing rain, all packed down hard and slippery! Poppy went to the mailbox yesterday...
There was no mail and no sign of tire tracks that the mail had run. Going in the opposite direction here, takes you into town. In case you're interested. :)
I started this post last Tuesday and here it is Saturday! The ground is still solid packed ice and we're waiting now for the next snowstorm.
We are not used to weather like this...ice covering the ground for a week and now a major snowstorm predicted for today and tomorrow!
So afraid of falling, I had to come up with some way to get to the goat lot and chicken house...
Well, necessity is the mother of invention! Our towels will probably never come clean but that's okay. We need a stack of new ones anyway. This idea works perfectly!! The towels stick to the ice and the top feels like walking on grass.
This pink one especially won't come clean! I had spilled a cup of coffee on it before adding it to my path. :) The damp towels stick to the ice better.
One more weather-related item and I will hush about it...Take a look, if you will at the weird icicle...
Okay, I'm done. You Northerners are probably thinking, "she doesn't know anything!! and I bet you're right!
Staying inside now, Ugg!!! I was bound and determined to finish this apron that has almost broke me from sewing altogether...
I've made a few teeny tiny pinafores and bonnets. These used to sell really well at the farmer's market. Don't know why I stopped making them...
Well, it's 10:41 am here and a few tiny snowflakes have started to fall. Guess I'll go prop up at the kitchen window, watch the birds, and finish off the bowl of popcorn from last night. :(
Want to mention though, I was looking back at the comments on my last post, the one just before Christmas. There were some very nice comments that I am just seeing. Thank you! And South Carolina girl, I enjoyed reading about the wormy Hickory nuts. The panful on our front porch may have worms but are too frozen to move around. :)

It is hard for you when you aren't used to that type of weather. We live in an area called the frozen tundra. We get cold in November and can't plant outside until after Memorial Day at the end of May. This week we have not been above zero and mostly way below zero. Today we are up to 22˚F and we feel like it is Spring. lol. Hang in there and be careful. We buy salt to sprinkle on the ice to melt it. Hugs- Diana

Looks so very pretty at your place. We're hoping for snow down here in Georgia today. I just love the snow. The apron is gorgeous so pretty.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the Ugh! this weather! We only had the snow and ice 3 days, but it was solid and dangerously slippery. We fed the ferals and crows (also bluejays, Cardinals, etc.), had to keep refilling their frozen water, etc. Don't know how people live where it's like that most of the winter. How did the bunnies take it? And I would think your dogs probably like the cold - with their big hairy coats!
ReplyDeleteYou are very resourceful...I will remember your towel help! We are getting beautiful soft snow now over all the hard ice of last week. I prefer this...my husband and I walked through the woods earlier...so much easier though you had to be careful!
ReplyDeleteI'm smiling at your towel-path Henny, I do the very same thing, I have a stack of old towels that I use for all kinds of "dirty" jobs. The ice storm here in Tennessee has brought down thousands of trees, folks are still without electricty, and the Tennessee National Guard have been activated to help clear paths for the linemen who are working around the clock, it's been horrendous.

Please stay safe when you have to venture across to feed your animals, ice can be so fickle.

Ah friend I am just glad to read that you are alive and well...my heart goes out to you - whew what a winter. We have over a foot of snow but I have to say I would rather have it than the ice you are dealing with right now. I am thinking the winter of 2026 may not be quickly forgotten. I love your apron...God bless you for keeping on sewing in spite of all the challenges. Will you be planning on selling it? If so I think it should be work quite a bit more than others just because of all the aggravation it caused. :)! Wow great idea about those towels...Just you and Poppy be safe and God Bless You. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteHenny, glad to hear you are safe and you figured a safe way to get out and feed the outdoor family. Can not let them starve. When you live that far south and east, you do not expect, want or really know how bad this weather is going to affect you til it happens. We had minus 20 in north central Ohio today to keep our 20 inches of snow from melting, lol. But we did not get sleet and ice which is a blessing. Hoping you kept power during all this. and now you are expecting heavy snow fall. Hope they are wrong. Glad you had the sewing to keep you sane. Lynn and Precious
ReplyDeleteWe occasionally get ice storms like that here in the Pacific Northwest, not often thank goodness, but when we do they are devastating. The ice coats everything. Then powerlines break, trees break, cars crash, and pipes freeze. No fun.

Goodness me that sure does look icy dear Henny Penny. I think the towels are the perfect solution - better to give up some old towels than take a nasty fall & break something. You are very talented...and I may be a wee bit jealous (I know we are not supposed to have any jealousy in us). lo. As far as the ice. It was the same around here and on our drive in to town this morning, we were so surprised at how much is still on the ground, especially in the more shaded areas. I'm certainly not a fan of the ice. Y'all keep warm and stay by the heaters till this all passes...
ReplyDeleteGood to see you, Melba! Where have you been? I am right there with you on this weather! Here in Oklahoma we got anywhere from 8" - 15" of snow. At our place it was about 10" and it is still hanging on although not as much but now it is icy because of melting and refreezing almost every day since it started a week ago. Still, I have to take care of my animals and I'm not above laying towels on the ground to do it, either!

ReplyDeleteThis is an awful condition. Stay safe. Be warm. I have cleats to go over my shoes for walking on ice but I guess you'd never find a cleat to buy there.

Using the old towels to make a path to where you need to safely go is a brilliant idea, Henny! We have some worn towels in our garage that we've hung on to, and now you've given me the good reason to do so. Yes, it's cold here, too. We are currently sitting at 19 degrees here in Kennesaw, Ga. That is a gorgeous apron and someone will be honored to own and wear it. I sure would be. I'm sorry it gave you such fits. We haven't had a ton of snow, just subzero temperatures for the past few weeks and flurries daily. This week is supposed to reach the 30's and we're all very excited.
