Occasionally, when I sit down

in the living room and sit for any length of time, say five or ten minutes, instead of resting, my eyes focus on the dusty old bottle collection, the deer mounts with cobwebs linking them together, maybe a tuft of white dog hair under the coffee table, or the dusty tail feathers of a turkey. But a day or so ago while in the living room, something beautiful caught my eye...

The Bobcat! I haven't told you about the Bobcat! It was over a year ago, our "soon to be new neighbor" Steve was on his way out and got just a few feet from turning into our dirt path and saw this Bobcat that had been hit and killed by a car...

Of course, Steve stopped to tell Poppy about it and the two of them went back to move the cat out of the road. The cat was just too beautiful to leave lying there so Poppy decided to have it mounted. We waited a full year for the taxidermist to finish. He said it was the largest Bobcat he has seen in this area, and it's a female!

This is the day Poppy brought it home in the truck...

We were curious to see what Eli and Ellie would think of a big, strange cat in the living room...

Eli went right up; Ellie growled a little but then the cat is looking straight at her. :)

I was just so sad and heartbroken that such a beautiful animal had to die this way but glad she is here with us now and not left on the side of the road.

Who knew we had cats this size in our woods!! I mean, I've been all in these woods around our house, by myself!! They say Bobcats are rarely seen but driving home from town a few days ago, one that looked a lot like this one ran across the road in front of my car, and in the same place this one was hit! Scared me to death!

Sorry to have gone on and on. Want to show you this vine, growing on the garden fence...

So as mama used to say, it volunteered and came up. All this time waiting for pink or blue morning glories to open and what?? We have a mass of tiny red blooms...

Anyone know what this is?

One more thing and I will hush and go away...it's the beauty berry bushes I planted a few years ago. Look how they've grown!!

I wanted a hedge along the side road to block the view. Now I can work in the garden and not be seen. :)

Never in a million years did I think these bushes would grow this big and be so pretty. Don't know how I got one white mixed in.

Okay, I have certainly overstayed my welcome. Thank you for visiting. Hope my posting about the Bobcat is acceptable and doesn't make anyone feel bad.

Love, Henny

  1. Having it mounted was a much better choice than simply burying it, Henny Penny. What an amazing specimen! Yes, that's one huge bobcat. Love your "volunteer" vine and the bushes you planted, too. Lovely colors for the end of summer. Blessings!

  2. Simply love the American Beauty Bush. Used to have one at our old home. Now I enjoy a neighbor's. I think it is grand Poppy had the bobcat preserved. We have more in Ohio than we knew, but I've never been out at night to see one. We are also getting lots more black bear. Don't need to see one of them, lol. I like the orange blossoms on your mystery vine. Maybe someone knows what it is. We are going into a cold front starting tonight with morns at 47 degrees instead of 70! Nuts.

  3. Henny, we get bobcats around here pretty often. They are beautiful... had 2 young ones in our yard not too long ago. They as far as I know, don't attack people... usually hunt small animals. So I've never been afraid of them... but don't want them in the yard because of the ferals that could be in danger. Love all your bushes and hedges. I would have loved to have blue morning glories on that bush, and I can't see it well enough - but possibly red honeysuckle? (which will attract hummingbirds). I think you have a green thumb...

  4. Neat bobcat...and large being a female even! I just bought one of those purple (American beautyberry) bushes. I love the color! And they do grow fast and well. I am waiting for my massive morning glory to bloom. Looks like you had a red trumpet-like wildflower vine that grew onto your morning glories. We have something similar growing along our roadsides here in Delaware. andrea

  7. Wow! What a beautiful cat and looks like the taxidermy work is exceptional! What I really want to know, is how dadgum fast was the person that hit her going? Rare to be able to hit a big cat. I've seen bobcats around here and often hear mountain lions up on the hills. I have yet to see one of those. Glad to see your post!

    Grace & Peace,
    Pam

  8. That bobcat is stunningly beautiful dear Henny. They have done such a wonderful job of mounting her - her eyes look like they could follow you around the room. Isn't that so sad that she was hit & killed. But kinda scary to think they are out there roaming near you. Your big bush that is making a hedge looks beautiful too. I would enjoy being able to garden & not be seen. I enjoy being outside anywhere & not being seen! Have a lovely week dear Henny. xx

  9. Wow! That is simply amazing...It really looks the
business! And...so well done...the colour, the outline,
    the pose...Amazing....!
    Bit of info...
Difference between a Bobcat and Lynx.
The former is a medium-sized cat with long, tufted ears
and a short, bobbed tail, while the latter is, well, a medium-sized
cat with long, tufted ears and a short, bobbed tail...
Yet they got slapped with different names and assigned to different
species....but belong to the same genus, the Lynx genus.....!

And...Just to confirm a couple of other comments, the mystery
plant is an Orange Blossom...They are native to Asia, specifically
southern China, India, and Southeast Asia, and used at Chinese
    weddings, as fragrance...!

I must get on...just got back from town, and we are in the middle
of 'another' heatwave...!: ( Rain forecast for Thursday...Let's hope so...
Oh! Meant to ask...What does Smokey think of the Bobcat...? HeHe! Bless!x

  11. Your bushes are so so pretty! I've seen that vine, but don't know what it is. The big cat is certainly beautiful ... but I don't know if I could sit in the room with it! Yikes! :)
Melba, I DID get your emails. Thank you so much! Adam is now deep into the new school year, so I don't know if he will get to sewing anytime soon :(

  12. I've been thinking about planting a row of crepe myrtles in front of my house to block the view from the highway, These bushes look much more useful . The bobcat is beautiful- it is a shame that it was hit. We have them here but have only ever seen them on a game cam. Have a great week!
