My little garden book

Hey friends,

I've sat down here at least a dozen times lately to do a little blog post, get started then think, "yuk, who would want to read this boring stuff"!

Sometimes I feel like ending it all! Well, not all, just my blog.

Guess I will muddle through and show you the only sunflower growing in my teeny tiny garden...and it volunteered and came up in the bean row...

10 feet it grew before sunflowers began opening...

It towers a good two feet above the eight foot garden fence and is such a happy sight for me.

How has your garden grown this summer?

My little garden struggled

through many hot dry days with no rain and now during the hot humid, "dog days of summer", we get late afternoon thunderstorms with hard downpours of rain causing limbs heavy with fruit to break.

Have you ever looked up from under an eggplant? I practically stood on my head to get this picture...

We have lots and lots of eggplants...

Lots of tomatoes too...and after all my picking I see another red one...

and so the teeny tiny garden is looking a little wind blown and ragged. The once, big pretty tomato plants have slid down the bamboo stakes and lay in piles. No pretty zinnias to show off this summer...not one seed sprouted.

Thank you Mr. Sunflower! and yay!! Look who was waiting for me just outside the gate...

Old sweet yellow eyes. Of course, the walk back to the house took twice as long with this kitty cat weaving in and out of every step.

If you're still here friends, I thank you.

Love, Henny

  1. How amazing your giant of a sunflower is! It stands tall cheering you on. Those eggplants and tomatoes are abundant. Eggplants are such lovely colours, aren't they? How sweet to have kitty cat share your path with you.

    1. Thank you Kim. Oh yes, eggplants are just beautiful. I love the rich purple color.

  2. Your teeny tiny garden is bigger than mine! My tomatoes are having a problem turning red - so we picked them and they turn inside. Maybe its the 100 degree heat? I don't know. My bell peppers are little, my zucchini is the only thing that keeps on producing. Lost my cucumbers, cabbage to bugs and my eggplant just never took off. Every year at this time, I say, "that's it - no more vegetable garden." I'm lousy at it.

I have some sunflowers and they are just about read to flower. They are such happy flowers aren't they?

I love your cat - beautiful.

Have a nice rest of your day.

  4. Dearest Henny, don't be so hard on yourself. Everybody loves reading your blog and it's ALWAYS interesting! It looks like your garden has done great this year,......what robust eggplants, tomatoes, peppers. What a wonderful happy
Sunflower plant! Forget about the zinnias and try again next year. Everything looks just great! I really hope you won't stop your blog, unless you really want to. I would sure miss you though. Do what's best for you! Love ya.

    1. Thank you Diane. I shouldn't complain about the garden. Ragged as it is it has produced some pretty good vegetables. Appreciate your encouraging words.

  5. Hi Henny! Glad to see your post and please don't stop! Just come around when you can. We enjoy seeing what's happening in your world.
Tomatoes aren't ready here yet - I'm jealous! And our zinnias didn't come up this year either.

    1. Thank you Mari. It must be something wrong with the zinnia seeds this year.

  6. Oh all those fresh vegetables look luscious! Lucky you who has the eating of them. The last several days here have given us some reasonable temperatures----low 80's. Got about an inch and a half of rain the end of last week which was sorely needed. Everything is growing like crazy, I can't remember when there was so much growth on things. My fig tree has figs coming along on it. They started showing up a month earlier than last year so I have hopes of them actually ripening this year. With the lower temperatures I've been busy deadheading things hoping for rebloom and cutting back would-be trees and shrubs that take over the large area of ivy in the back yard if not taken in hand and watering, watering, watering. Like an idiot I've been digging a couple of small new beds in the shady back to transplant a huge Hosta that is getting too much direct sun and reflected heat where it is now. It's too big to fit in the first little bed that I dug last week so I will divide the Hosta in half and put half in each bed along with some other shady things. It should fare better with less light and heat. Maybe more rain early Sunday morning--------hope so it sure would come in handy.

    1. Oh Victoria, you are such a hard worker. I have several pots of Hostas that need to be in the ground. Just can't find a spot to dig. I did make a small bed near the compost bin...set out six Hostas and along came the deer. :( Thank you for taking time out to visit.

  7. Hello Dear Henny. It's so good to see your post. Please don't stop blogging. We love to see whatever you wish to share. Your teeny tiny garden is literally about 10 times the size of mine. I harvested for the first time just this morning. Four zucchini!!! I was so excited. I shredded and froze them and ended up with 7 2-cup bags for baking. I also picked the only green pepper on the plant so far. No cucumbers, tomatoes or green beans yet.
Your sunflower is beautiful. They are such happy flowers. It has been SO HUMID here too. It was a "feel like" temperature of 107F this afternoon. It was awful. Maybe that's why my plants aren't doing as well as I would like.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

    1. Hello to you dear Betsy. Thank you! Glad you got the zucchihi. I've picked two so far. The first one I grated and made a loaf of zucchini bread. It was good! That's about all I know to do with a zucchihi. Maybe I should Google for recipies. We have had a few of those "feel like" 104 and 105F days too. It's just miserable.

  8. While our tomatoes grow tall, they are a long ways off from ripening. Some peppers in pots might beat them. Zucchini and cucumbers just won't grow. Neither will the sweet peas. So far, not a very good garden year. Too much shade from trees now.

    1. You know Linda, I am shocked at the many people who say their garden plants just won't grow this summer. And especially that seeds won't germinate. If flowers or vegetables won't grow for you and Tom it's got to be the plants. You two both have the greenest thumbs!! :)

  9. Now, Henny. Stop talking like that :) Your posts are NOT AT ALL boring! Yours is one of the very first blogs I'll click over to read, and I read every single post you do, because I love hearing you chatter on about your daily doings on your little farm! Do not stop! What feels "boring" to you, is only boring because you're living it every day. But to the rest of us ladies out here of a certain age, it's a window into a different life, one that is beautiful and sweet.
We did have such a LONG dry spell! Now we are getting gully-washed with rain. Your little garden is producing! That sunflower is stunning and so happy. I have no veggie garden this year, but my herb bed is mighty thankful for rain at last. My new comfrey plant survived. And my four lavender pushes are thriving in pots in the yard! They sit on top of the septic tank.
    Much love your way!

  10. Now! Let's get one thing straight before l start...
You cannot and will not stop Bloggiing.....
I for one will certainly miss ALL the fruit and veg..
ALL the furry ones, and Poppy hanging out of a
tree, trying to shoot wild turkeys....! HeHe! :).
Yours and Julies are the two l look forward to...! :).
So lets get these 'negative' thoughts 'out' of our
    heads! :).

    Eggplant...Aubergine...or Melanzana being Sicilian
of course...cleaned, washed, thinly sliced and fried
in butter/olive oil...! Lovely on toast or garlic bread! :)

And Smokey..Bless!x I bet he loves the garden as much
as anyone..lots of things to hunt and chase...! :0).

Well must get on..it's very hot over here with warnings
of 40+ in temperature for the next few days, my grass
has turn brown already, l'm keeping the baskets and
flowers well watered, and just using a watering can,
not a hose, a hose wastes so much water..! :(.

With a tickle on the tum for Smokey..l'll say arrivederci..! :O).

  11. Henny, don't you dare stop blogging! I love to see what you have when you have it! Just love it. And your
produce looks so delicious. I have on patio potato. I plant one eye every year in a cat litter bag, using very
good potting soil, not cat litter, lol. It sometimes makes lots of taters and sometimes not. You did great job on
the egg plant photo. I have never eaten one, just not sure they look edible to me for some reason. And Precious
is so glad, as I, that Smokey showed up for the photo shoot. This weather has been a roller coaster fer sure.

  12. Henny - You have a great crop there of Eggplant. Eggplant is one of my very favorite things to eat- I make a casserole with Eggplant, Onion, Tomatoes and Cheese - delicious! Stay well there- best wishes. KEV.

  13. We love everything you write, Henny. And your garden looks wonderful, even as it nears its end in the summer heat. :)
Zinnias don't seem to work for me, either. My beans didn't even want to grow this year. I did get some cucumbers and was thankful for those.
You all be safe and God bless.

  14. I think you would have us all sobbing in our lace hankies if you quit blogging! Your garden is beautiful and even though the zinnies didn't come out-you have lots of pretty veggies. And one beautiful cat.

  15. I always love seeing your sunflowers, one very tall one or an entire garden, they all make me smile.
Our weather has been the hottest and driest these early summer days, it takes a toll on everything including the gardener

You've had another successful vegetable garden this year, we had our first ripe tomatoes this week, and they were so juicy and delicious, but took lots of bird netting to keep out the bandits.
Thank you for sharing Your beauty with us, especially that sweet little kitty.
    Hugs,
    Jo

  17. I agree with Mary Kathryn. Your posts are never boring. I think Egg Plants are so pretty but have never tasted one. I guess we're just not into trying "strange" new vegetables.
My zinnias came up and were chewed down overnight by heaven-knows-what. I sprinkled them with Rotenone and they're slowly growing again but they'll be blooming in October at this rate.
Take care and know that we all love you. GM

  18. I really am quite envious of your oh-so-fine tomato crop. Mine have, for the third or fourth year, died of some kind of wilt. Having seen yours, I now want a BLT sandwich made with homegrown tomatoes. My hubby says he thinks I would like to eat these sandwiches three times a day. He is right! :~)

  19. Love that sunflower display..georgeous and happy. Thats quite a fence you have there, too. :0) 8ft..wow. Sorry your garden is probably not as good as yall are used to..but it looks nice..enjoy the fruits of your labor. I love eggplants..wow..pretties..Thanks for sharing. Love it all.

  21. I've never had success with eggplants, nor do I ever seem to get many peppers, so I'm really impressed with your garden! I love it when something beautiful volunteers like that. It's always happy to see someone else's garden.

  22. Interesting sunflower. Mine ever only give me one big blossom per plant. I am envying all those tasty homegrown tomatoes. We just can’t grow them here. They give us a few fruit and then succumb to some disease that seems to be present in the soil or maybe the air. Sure miss juicy homegrown “maters”!

  26. Your garden looks really good. We have a very small garden this year and it was a little later. I wish I would have took pictures and blogged about it but I still have very little motivation to do anything. Oh well. I canned an froze some corn. I have canned some green beans We did not plant egg plants this year. Yours look really good. For some reason this will never let me comment as my name. But it is me vickileetea! Love you bunches

  27. Dear Henny - first thank you for your sweet words regarding Shelby. I know you understand perfectly being a pet lover as I am.
Now let me say your posts are never boring and I enjoy seeing your garden and home...Eli and Ellie and "yellow eyes".
I only had a few sunflower seeds germinate even though I planted a huge row of them. Hmm wonder why that happened. Well there is always next year to try again. That is what we gardeners do best - dream about next year's garden. As for zinnias...forgot to plant some so definitely on next year's list. Who doesn't love those zinnias!! Take care friend and have a blessed week. Hugs!

  29. I love reading your blog and seeing real everyday living in your neck of the woods. Your eggplant is beautiful! I love it. Mom used to fry it sometimes in cornmeal for breakfast. She would soak it a little while in vinegar water first. Your tomatoes look so pretty. Tomatoes did horrible this year. This winter I will do like daddy used to do and burn some leaves on top of the garden area and work it in for the next season. Always does good with the wood ash thrown on it also. Good years and bad years I guess as always. Look forward to your next post, Betsy

  30. Gardening has been rough this year. We got raided by bands of marauding squirrels.
They stripped peach, plum, nectarines and apple trees.
The tomatoes were a complete loss. We had so much rain they all burst open.
I did get lots of zucchini, corn, red potatoes too. But my yellow squash fared no better than
    yours did with the bugs.
I'm so glad Eli is feeling better,he is a beautiful boy.
Now please don't stop blogging,as you can tell from the comments we all enjoy
What you write a about. Your blog is a quiet stroll in the woods in a chaotic
    Noisy world. We love ya!

  31. I planted two tomato plants and two cucumber plants in pots. I got a few little tomatoes. I did not have all I wanted to eat one single time. No cucumbers from the cucumber plants. They were full of blooms but did not get pollinated. A couple cucumbers tried to grow, but since they were not pollinated good...did not grow right...for sure nothing a person could eat. I have seen exactly one honeybee this summer. And none of the other bees that are like small bumblebees. Usually the minute my coneflowers start bloom, there is always something on the flowers. Nothing this year. It has been so very strange. Early in the summer I have clover that blooms, and that is where I saw the one bee. Usually can walk out and find a bee any time I want. And believe me, I have sat and watched and watched. I am not watching so much now but I sure did every day that it wasn't raining for a while.
