Mossy Green

Here's the moss covered tree ...

that grows along the path at the back of the chicken lot...just down hill from our little moss covered pet cemetery...
we walk this way most every morning. Green moss covers lots of areas around here due to the acid soil and wet weather. What a wet winter this has been.

Sorry Eli, just stopped to take a picture.

See how wet everything is? We need a week or two of nothing but bright sunshine.

Here's the sun shining through the trees. No wonder Poppy and Eli stopped to sit.

Friends, would you believe that acres and acres of trees are still being cut, out this way. It is unbelievable! All day long, five days a week we can hear the buzz of saw blades on those big machines, taking down trees, and logging trucks going up and down the road.

It's looking like our little patch of woods may be all that's left when the loggers finish.

And did you know that in order to get the pines and hardwoods, the loggers cut down everything in their path...like the eastern red cedars...
and the beautiful holly trees...
and leave them on the ground to rot. Around here, the woods here are full of cedars and hollies. It's sickening!

The sun came out this afternoon and the temperature climbed to 74 degrees. No complaints here!

We sat on the front porch while Eli and Smokey enjoyed the sun. Actually, Eli was sleeping before Smokey pounced on his head.
and silly Dumperoo...
said he's afraid to come all the way out.

well, maybe this far, if no one is watching.
and little Weetie...
This is her favorite spot in the sun.

Gosh, I get started and don't know when to stop. Guess this just about covers it.

Hope to be back soon.

Love,
Henny

  1. Sad that money takes your trees away. They have reasons for clear cutting...all of them wrong.

  2. I'm sorry to hear they are still cutting trees. I hate to see the loss of trees like that. Thank goodness you have your land and you have neighbors that own part of the land in the area too. Thank goodness there are still some people left that keep trees.

I just love all the sweet furry baby pictures! I especially love that picture of Dumperoo in the doorway. He looks like he is smelling the sweet Spring air!

How's your back doing Henny? I hope and pray it is much better! Take care of yourself and Poppy and stay well!

  3. Clear cutting is hard to see but it is the way crops are harvested, and trees are crops. At least the stuff left behind will rot and feed the soil for the next crop. I will be interested to see how/when/if they replant.
We always love visiting with your furry friends.

  4. Aww, your sweet fur babies. They all look so happy together. They know they have a great home and are loved. I'm sorry to hear about the tree situation. I think the hardest thing would be to see the dead trees they cut for no real reason and leave to rot. So sad.
We're supposed to have 7-10 inches of snow Friday and Saturday along with the coldest day of the winter so far. This after I found my first little flower, a crocus, of the season a few days ago. I was so ready for spring but I guess it was a tease.
    Wishing you a wonderful Thursday.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  5. It makes me sad when they clear-fell trees like that. There is so often no need for them to operate that way; it is just so wasteful. You can almost hear the land crying.
Yesterday people could not see some of the photos on my posting, and today I cannot see some of your photos (numbers 3,4 & 5). Must be something wrong with Google at the moment - it is most annoying.

  7. Hi Henny- it is a pity that your loosing the surrounding Pine Plantations- you'l be an Oasis there for awhile. Were into Autumn with cool days and cooler nights - some rain too. This coming Winter is going to be cold. Best Wishes. KEV.

  8. Goodness! I just suddenly remembered...
"A rolling stone gathers no moss"...
Meaning...A person who likes to move often or is
unwilling to settle down in one place or with one
person or both. For more information on the proverb,
Wikipedia has a dedicated article which also mentions..
"Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" by The Temptations....
An ALL time Motown favorite of mine from 1972...

  9. Nice to see Weetie. Seems he’s a bit shy about showing off his little self. That picture of Eli on the picnic table — wow. He’s a biiiiig boy! We are having 70s weather, too, and loving it. Trying to spend lots and lots of time outside before the bugs start up and the humidity comes.

  10. It breaks my heart to hear about the trees. Trees are living things, just as we are, and all with a God-given purpose. It reminded me of this saying:

“Only when the last tree has been cut down, the last fish been caught, and the last stream poisoned, will we realize we cannot eat money.”

    ― Cree Indian Prophecy

You can be sure that it's money behind the clearing of the land. How very, very sad.

I love seeing your furry pets - aren't they a comfort!!!

  11. Henny, of course who wouldn't want to enjoy sun and 74! Hoping here to get to 50!
Dumperoo looks like he is taste testing the air in the first photo to make sure is
smelled good enough to venture out on the porch. Once again, I do say, how awful it
is with the clear cutting of trees. Sorry to hear it is still going on. At least
Smokey is not intimidated by Eli's size!

  12. Hi,
I love your property Henny. Moss is one of my favorites. There is a woods in East Wisconsin that is all moss. It is amazing. I will have to post some photos of it for my Green Post for March. ;-)

  13. Oh I don't like to hear that about how timber is logged. I'm not entirely opposed to using the timber, but to destroy everything in the path - that's the part that irks me. Why can't they do it wisely - oh yea, $$$ :-(

  14. Eli and Smoky are beautiful animals. I love the photo of the tree covered with moss. Your nature photos are lovely.

  15. Henny, I love all your pictures... especially that moss covered pet cemetery! And Eli is such a handsome dog. Smokey, Dumperoo, and Weetie are pretty cute too.

  16. I love to see all of your pet friends. You can always see that they know they are loved. I have two little Min Pins but I love to hug my Pit/Boxer mix the best...all 130# of him. (I'm pretty sure there is some other BIG dog in his mix). It too sad about the trees. I'm so glad for you that you own your own. The land we are buying in CA does not have a tree stand, but it backs up to Government land with a forest. And it's on the side of a mountain. Neighbors are a good distance away and we are hoping the land across the road will be for sale so and we'll grab it. This was a lovely serene post. Just what most people need to see today.
    xx, Carol

  17. I was just noticing yesterday the beautiful green of moss growing on the north side of the one big tree we have left. And it grows in the north flower beds, making it very difficult to grow flowers. I've always thought of fairy gardens when I see the moss. I have a Smokey too! and a pet cemetery!

    1. Henny, in response to the comment you left for me about quilting, you should give it a try. You sew aprons so well you should have no trouble in piecing blocks. Start with something simple like four patches; they make beautiful quilts.

  18. It's a crying shame that the loggers cut down everything in their path so as to get at the hardwood trees.
I don't remember you mentioning before that you had a cemetery for your pets that have died. It sure looks damp and mossy all right.
It's sunny and 10C ( 50F) today so later on I'm going to be working outside. Lots to do ( as you well know!).

  19. I think spring moss is pretty! Love all the pictures of your furry creatures enjoying the sun and the porch and the weather! That Eli looks like a big ole fluffy white friendly bear!!--he's so gorgeous!!

  20. What a shame about all the trees being cut down.
    Enjoyed seeing all your photos.
Sun shinning through the trees is such a pretty thing to see.

  21. Wow, you get a really good idea of how big Eli is with him sitting next to Poppy.

  22. Gosh Henny, that's so depressing to hear about all the logging being done around you. I'm so sad for the trees being left to rot on the ground. How agonizing for you to listen to that sounds all day long. I'm sorry for you.

  23. Eli is so beautiful! Thanks for sharing photos of your place. Be blessed,

  24. I am with you friend when it comes to chopping down those trees. It always makes me sad to have them come in to clean the electric lines. That Eli is so gorgeous and I love how the moss covers your tree. Hope you get lots more sunshine this weekend. We had some yesterday and had a gorgeous walk. Take care friend and have a super day. Hugs!

  25. Your animal photos have made my day much brighter...especially love the picnic table precious one!!!! What a shame about the trees...it turns my stomach hearing about it.. sad, sad, sad..! We live in a neighborhood but have trees surrounding the front of our house and two sides..BUT the back side trees are predominantly on someone else's land..right now they are safe but always worry if the now neighbors were to sell out. This day and time..one can never have too much privacy and beauty surrounding us to shield us from the unknowns of the real world.!! Have a blesse day and stay safe everyone...

  26. I think it's sad that the trees are being chopped down. We need lots of trees to clean the air. Anyway, your blog photos are beautiful. I have added you to my blog roll. Aloha from Hawaii.

  27. 74 and sunshine sounds like pure heaven to me!! They've been logging in the woods behind my house for the past couple of seasons, too - I hate all the noise, but I'm really glad they seem to have displaced the coyote den that was back there. Before they started logging we had a terrible problem with coyotes, which scared the heck out of me with my little pups!

  28. Sounds like someone sold a bunch of timber. It happens around here too, thankfully not next door a lot to the south of us is a Pine Tree Plantation that started a forest fire a number of years ago...luckily it did not go into the Oaks where we live...so I would welcome loggers over there. Eli looks so handsome and clean! :)

  29. Hmmmm. All that tree cutting is a little disheartening.
    Dumperoo, he's my favorite.
    Stay safe, sweet Henny.

  30. A sunny day around here is such a blessing, isn't it? We feel quite soggy too. Your pets are so adorable. I'm sorry about all those trees going away :( They log LOTS around here too. The forests come down and what is left is so UGLY. They do cut down all the trees ... well, mostly ... they often leave a few mangled stragglers that look even worse there alone. Sigh. I don't like it either.

  31. I have missed visiting your blog. I stopped blogging for a while, but I'm back. It's always a comfort to my heart to visit you!

  32. Hi Henny...I have to hold back tears reading about your trees. It is absolutely heartbreaking to hear of them all being cut and some so callously discarded. So wrong.
I hope you are all doing well since this virus has hit us all.
We are fine; staying close to home and missing the family but better safe than sorry.
Little Cora was spayed so I have her home and looking after her. Wilson is also taking care of his girl.
Gary has some inside work still to do on the breezeway and I am cooking and baking up a storm.
I'm also being entertained by a fox that has decided to make a den under my neighbour's shed. Lucky for me it is in view of my kitchen window. :-) Do you remember the fox family that was here last year? This might be the same mom-to-be. I'll keep you posted.
Stay healthy and I send hugs to all. xo
