A Goat Farm!!!

What should I talk about today...the winter storm that is all around us and what miserable weather we are having, or how dangerous it is to be out on the roads today? When Poppy left for work at 6:30 this morning, the roads were dry but that's not the case now. Hopefully he will get home safe.

Seems there is seriously bad winter weather everywhere today.  Yesterday however, was good here, and I have something really fun and special to share with you.

As Lynn would say, be still my heart! Do you know how much I love hay! Bales of hay in the warm sunshine! Bales of soft warm hay in the sunshine covered in sweet baby goats! See the little black goat in the middle?

Shelby called a few days ago to tell me about some baby goats...lots of baby goats. For those of you who are new to my blog, Shelby is my sister. Come to see me Thursday, Shelby said, and we will go see the goats. In fact, the girls have a special little female goat, born the first of January. They have been bottling feeding her and she is spoiled rotten. She sleeps in the bathtub at night but lately has been getting out of the tub and jumping in the bed.

The couple who own this farm sell at the same farmer's market where Shelby and Jimmy sell their goods. In fact , they set up next to Shelby and Jimmy.

So here we are at the farm...except for me

This is Robbie and Debbie who own the farm, and that is Shelby in the center. Shelby needs a baby goat too, don't you think? Why that baby slept in her arms most of the time we were there.

All the goats were friendly and lovable...chickens were too.

At one point several of the goats wandered down the path toward the main road. It was cute watching them all following Robbie back home...I picked up the camera a little too late to catch all the goats.

and now, the rest of the story...

No, this is not a baby donkey...much too small, but that face! She has the sweetest little donkey looking face.

and here...jumping on the living room furniture...from chair to couch to coffee table and back. Spoiled rotten, she is! But look at that face!

Poppy had just said to me, Mel, it will be looking like a barn in here soon...when she hopped from the box to the foot stool to Poppy's lap and nudged him under his chin. He loved it! Today is Poppy's birthday, by the way. Oops, and I got the baby goat!

Right now she is in a large pet carrier with soft hay...the carrier sits in the dining room by the front door. I worried that she would cry all night but she didn't. She had her last bottle of milk for the day. I put an old soft sheet over the hay, added a small stuffed animal and covered the carrier with a quilt. Once the lights were out she went to sleep and slept until 7:45 this morning. Good thing too. I was exhausted!

Looks like I've got a full time job for a few weeks...or months! Did I mention that she is spoiled rotten? :)

Guess my time at the computer is up. I hear that sweet little cry. She sounds like a squeaky toy. Time for a bottle. Hope to be back real soon.

Poppy just made it home safe. It is sleeting at the moment. Oh, and Shelby and Jimmy left home at 3:30 this morning, driving to Florida. They got ahead of the bad weather coming this way. Lucky folks! Cousin Pat and her husband Mike are meeting them there.

Oh again, a special thank you to my new followers. Sometimes I forget to say it, but I appreciate your friendship so much!

Love,
Henny

You might search some of my old posts about our goat...something I will never get again although she was a sweet heart.

  4. Now this is just too precious. I love goats anyway but this little one is off the chart for cuteness. I'm going to show my ignorance by asking why people raise goats. I know goat's milk is suppose to be good. I don't see knitters knitting yarn from their coats, unless it's mohair. Do you sell them for their meat? Oh I do know another purpose. Here they have 'rent a goat' businesses where you can rent goats to clear land. We have a lot of overgrown blackberry bushes & I've read goats do a wonderful job getting rid of those. Anyway, your baby is very sweet. Do you use diapers?

    1. Thank you! At the farmer's markets here, there are lots of soaps and lotions make from goat's milk. At this farm they do milk the goats. Some farms raise goat's for meat to sell. Oh, and to clear land too. For me, the goats are pets. I would love to have a few more, but Poppy says two is enough. We had two pygmy goats and one of them died recently, that is why we had to get another one.

  5. What an adorable goat! I see why you had to bring her home.
Glad Poppy arrived home safe and sound. Be careful this weekend!

  6. Oh my, you really did need another animal to take care of. Good thing she is sleeping through the night. Don't they have sharp little hooves and wouldn't that make holes in the upholstery as well as other things? It sounds as though she has both you and Poppy well and truly wrapped around her little hoof already. How is Eli taking begin supplanted in the animal chain with this new addition? Or has she charmed him as well?

    1. I know! I need to have my head examined, and in all this bad weather! Her little hoofs are not sharp at all and she is very light weight. She is a sweetie pie and has not messed up anything...yet! As soon as the sun comes back and we get rid of this snow and ice, she will be in the goat lot with our other goat during the day. I'll sure have to watch her close. Oh, Poppy was just telling someone on the phone that "she is a sweetheart", talking about the baby goat.

  7. What a cutie! I had a goat once...it was so much fun...he followed me all over...hated thunderstorms and would put his head in my lap...cause I let him inside the house too...if I didn't he would plop himself in front of the door and bawl. Did I mention he ate evrrything in sight? He did:) I wonder what her name will be? Hope you don't get too much snow:)

  8. As soon as you mentioned the little black goat in the first picture, I knew where this post was going:) Congrats, and what a cutie! I never even considered getting a goat here. Larry's first impression of goats is of some that jumped up on his cousins brand new car and bounced around all over the hood!

  13. Be still my heart is right! That is exactly what I feel...I have never had a goat...I grew up in East Tennessee and I don't think I knew anyone that had goats. Still cannot think of anyone where I grew up that has goats now, but always when we used to take the kids to the county fairs I loved the baby goats.

My daughter had a friend where she worked who had a goat....it was an outside goat. But they had the lever type handles on their doors instead of the regular round door knobs...the goat knew how to open the door. They had to make sure it was locked. This woman had school children and her son actually had the goat get in and eat his homework.

    1. That is so funny! Goat are smart! This little one keeps nibbling at my magazines. I have to watch her close. Goats are really fun to play with and watch. This one doesn't walk, she bounces. Once this cold wintry storm is over, she can play in the goat lot with our other goat.

  18. She sure is a cutie. I hope she's as smart as she is cute so you can train her if you plan to keep her in the house. I read the other comments and it seems that goats will eat anything. I'm glad Poppy made it home from work safely. That storm system looks like it's hitting your area pretty hard. I hope the sleet didn't amount to much. I've been thinking about you, hoping you don't have ice causing lots of problems. Stay safe and warm.

    1. I appreciate that Peg. We have had snow, sleet and freezing rain. It is snowing now. It looks beautiful but feels like walking on packed rough ice. I'm ready for it to go away! The little goat has not made a mess yet. She is in her crate most of the time and sleeps a lot. She plays hard when she is awake though, jumping and running! I can't leave her alone! :)

  29. How adorable! I have been wanting a goat, but Steve says, no. He doesn't want to have any animals that if we want to take off for a few days, we need to get someone to take care of them. When we first moved onto our little home there was a section in the back that hadn't been touched in years and the grass was three feet tall. I mentioned to a few people that I wished I had a goat to eat down that grass. Then one day when we were driving in from one of our many trips to Home-Depot Steve says, "What the!" Back in that section were four goats tethered and feeding on the grass. Before the week was up, we had meet a new neighbor that raised goats and put up a gate so they could run free. Then he brought over more goats. We had about five or six adults and many babies back there until the grass was gone. The Lord says ask and you shall receive . . . it was a total surprise and a very fun experience, that we will never forget. Goats are so sweet :) I had a friend that use to have goats and she made her own cheese and from that cheese she made an incredible cheese cake. Do you like cheese cake?
Have fun with your little darling and stay warm during your winter storm.

  30. I just read through the comments and saw that every time you mention her, you say she's a sweetie pie or a sweetheart. If you call her that anyway, you might name her Sweetie or something similar. When I look at the pictures, I can just see her prancing and dancing all over everything. For some reason when I see that I think of the name Trixie. Maybe I saw a movie or TV show with a character named Trixie who was a dancer. Maybe her personality will make you think of the perfect name for her. Have fun. With your weather, she'll be staying inside with you for a while so enjoy her.
