Picking vegetables and reading

I was up at the garden at 9:00 this morning picking anything worth bringing in. There are still enough beans to pick and cook. Lots of okra and peppers still coming, and tomatoes but the tomatoes are not so pretty and they don't keep very well.  Seems okra really comes out when everything else is dying down. Okra has a pretty bloom...

This just may be our last colorful pot of garden vegetables. Okra is on the bottom...

I am reading the most interesting book called "More Than a Ticket" by Argie Ella Hoskins. A few weeks back I did a post about my Mother and Daddy flying to New York in the 1950's. Daddy often flew from North Carolina to New York on business. Well for my post I searched on line for a picture of commercial airlines and stewardesses from the 1950's. Fortunately, I happened upon a blog called americanairlinesstewardess.blogspot.com and wasted no time ordering her book. I am loving it. The book is loaded with pictures from the 1950's and her story just touches my heart. Argie Hoskins is adorable in her American Airlines uniform.

Anybody who reads my blog knows how much I love the 1950's. When I was a teenager, becoming an airline stewardess was my dream. Daddy went so far as to ask a stewardess during a flight to please write to me and she did. Wish I had that letter now.

Back to plants...the tiniest sweetest little vine has come up in the yard and wound itself around a lemon balm plant. This is a weed with heart shaped leaves, but just too cute to pull up and toss away...

Thank you for visiting.

Love,
Henny Penny

  1. Such a pretty pot of veggies, and I love okra blossoms, too. Last year I grew red okra. The okra pods and stems were red, but the flowers were just like the ones on green okra. I had to grow them to see if the blossoms would be red or pink or something.

    1. I have never heard of red okra. That would be fun to try next summer, if I can find the seed around here.

  2. Shoot, I just wrote a comment and then lost it (my fault). Here the lemon balm would be considered a weed by many. It needs to be contained in a pot or it overtakes everything. I've been trying for a few years to rid a bed of it, and a bit of root or some seeds keep on germinating.
Pretty flower on the Okra, it makes me think of a Hibiscus. And lo and behold, Google tells me that they are related:)

    1. I am always losing a comment and then hate to write another! Lemon balm should be called a weed here too. It is totally taking over. I have tried to keep it from getting in the garden but have found tiny plants growing there. The garden is a good walk from where the lemon balm grows in the yard. I 'll probably never get rid of it. Wish I had know lemon balm was so invasive before I planted the first sprig. I did not know okra and Hibiscus are related, but the flowers sure look alike. Thank you.

  3. The red flower is most likely a relative of the one called Cardinal Climber. You could almost start a roadside veggie stand! :)

    1. Cardinal Climber...the name suits the little vine. I hope it will come back next year.

    1. Thank you. Hope your week end is good too. Sometimes I think I am allergic to okra, the way it stings my hands and arms, but I love it!

  5. Love your pot that you pick your veggies in. We had so many green beans I go tired of picking them and canning them. I was running out of places to store my jars. I love you and i appreciate the encouragement use send me on my dieting.

    1. I am about sick of picking beans too and I probably only grew about a fourth of what you had. This was a good summer for gardening. I told Dan that we need to add a small room onto the house to hold more stuff. I am out of room! He said no, you need to stop bringing stuff in. He is the one who keeps buying things! Love you Vicki.

  6. I freeze my tomatoes. Take off the top and bottom, wash them put em in a bag and your done. You can take what ever you want for a recipe. so that's what I do when tomatoes get over ripe.

    1. I am glad you told my that. I have a pan of tomatoes sitting on the counter now that I need to put somewhere. I'll try freezing these your way. Thank you!

  7. We don't do okra here so I have never seen its bloom. Very pretty.
That little vine is lovely too, much to pretty to be a weed!

  8. I like that little vine. Just as sure as I try to keep it, it will die. Guess I had better leave it alone and hope it will come back next year.
