Buttons and Oil Lamps

I've finished one more altered skirt. This one is my favorite. Now if only I can muster up the nerve to wear it. Lynn says, "mom, wear what you love"! I love the pink linen with the cut work bottom...

The sewing room makes me happy. Old things make me happy.  Once at a yard sale I found a very old cigar box filled with sewing notions.  Who could resist buying something like that for a dollar or two?

Quart jars of old buttons make me happy. Do you reckon there could be any buttons here worth anything? Poppy might could quit work and I could buy a donkey... :)

There are some really old buttons here. Take a closer look...

I would never be lucky enough to happen upon something worth a lot of money.

Looking at these buttons sometimes I see one that brings back memories...like remembering seeing the same button on one of Aunt Berlie's simple cotton dresses. She used to order her dresses from the Sears Roebuck catalog. Once when I was spending a few days with her, she ordered a dress for me too. A simple little cotton dress.

Maybe it's the old glass buttons that are worth something and some of these look like glass...

Oh well, enough about becoming rich off old buttons.

Oil lamps make me happy. Once upon a time, back before we invested in a generator, Poppy and I used all these oil lamps. During every storm seems like we lost our electricity. It was fun lighting the oil lamps. I will never understand though how people read or for that matter did anything by the light of an oil lamp. Mama used to say that her daddy read the Bible every night. I'm sure it was by the light of an oil lamp and maybe the flickering light from the fire in the fireplace. That reminds me...Mama had two brothers, Henry and Charlie. Mama said her daddy would get a fire going in the fireplace and Charlie would start messing with the fire. Grandpa would say, Charlie if you'll leave the fire alone it will burn! That was many years ago. Mama was born in 1917 and she was just a girl back when Charlie would play with the fire.

Some of the oil lamps scattered throughout our little house...

The lady in the picture is Lynn, my daughter. This is a copy of a painting done by Jeffrey Mims, an artist in Southern Pines...

Whew! Sometimes I get carried away. Thank you for visiting!

Love,
Henny Penny

  1. Well you touched on a near and dear to my heart memorabilia. My mom has an old button box and I know that it contains buttons that she collected and those that belonged to my granny. The box is not the dear, although I would love to have it...it's all the home-made clothes my mom made for me all of my life. I remember favorites- a navy skirt, a pinafore dress, and later, cute tops and dresses. She even sewed my wedding gown. Thanks for sharing- I think your skirt is cute- I would wear it!~

    1. Oh, I can't imagine making a wedding gown. I struggled to learn how to make bonnets and aprons. My Mother made lots of my dresses too. Don't you wish we had those dresses now, to look at and to hold.

  2. When we sold most everything to afford to move back home my jars of buttons could have bought me a donkey! The women were bidding high for those buttons. Love your skirt, it's so pretty. Thanks for stopping by my blog and following too. Have a great week ahead!

  3. My grandmother and mother - and I, in my earlier years - were sewers. I have very clear memories of playing with their button jars, although for the life of me I can't remember what I actually did with them. It's just so soothing to push them around and look at all the different shapes and colors.

    1. Marty, you describe everything so perfectly. "Push" the buttons around. That's exactly what we do. It is fun.

  4. Your daughter is right - wear what you like and that skirt is beautiful. I haven't my grandma's button collection, and an oil lamp collection which was my only source of light for the 11 years I lived in the North Carolina mountains. Now they are just dust collectors but they hold a lot of precious memories. I love the painting of your daughter. What a treasure!

  6. Oh yes, buttons. I have a large tin of buttons as well as several jar that my mother saved over the years. She was a wonderful seamstress and sewed most all my clothes as well as those of my sister when we were growing up. I love the round ones strung on that string with the double holes that look like they are made of bone, or ivory. So soft looking.

Oil lamps as well at my house. We do use them when the electricity goes off which seems to happen all too often. Just the other night----not much of a storm---a little rain and wind but somewhere along the line a tree came down and so no lights for us from 7 until 1:30. Somehow our house is on a different line, circuit, stub or whatever it is called and often our house is the only one around here without lights. Doesn't seem fair.

That's a great skirt. It would look lovely with a lacy blouse and heels----you will have to dream up a fancy occasion to dress up for.

    1. Hey Victoria! I think the buttons on the string look the oldest too. Our electricity used to go off like that too...the tiniest thunderstorm and we were without power for hours! Thank you!

  7. Oh how I love the buttons!!! I wish so much I would have got my granny's bucket of buttons that she had collected over the years. I wish I had some one to go to consignment and junk stores with me. I love your home and the way it is decorated. I have no since for decorating. I also love the skirt and I think it would be beautiful on you!

    Love you

    1. Vicki, I wish were closer together too. I would sure go with you to those junk stores. Our entire house is decorated with stuff from thrift stores and flea markets. I love the real old things. Yard sales and flea markets are where you find old graniteware pots and tubs and things. Maybe one day we can get together and do that.I could get Shelby to go too and we could meet you somewhere. What happened to your granny's bucket of buttons? I love you!

  8. Yes, wear what you love, even if you just wear it around home. I've taken to wearing sort of tennis skirts or skorts sometimes in the summer. Kind of short skirts, but the swish of the fabric makes the air move around my legs and it feels cooling.
I used to collect oil lamps for a while, and still have a few. You have some really nice ones. I'm like you, can't imagine having to do much by the light of a lamp, I need all the light I can get these days.
I am mightily impressed how tidy your sewing room is, I'd hate for you to see mine right now. Too much fabric, not enough room.

    1. I used to have a pair or two of those skorts that I found at a thrift store. I liked wearing those better than shorts. So do I have to have all the light I can get. Seems my eyes have gotten worse since I started blogging, I wonder why! :)

  9. Dear Melba,
That is the prettiest skirt, I bet you are going to be wearing it soon after all the nice comments. Your button collection is a treasure. Does anyone save buttons anymore? Or mend? Actually, I have a couple of old favorite tops that I have mended lately, and I had saved the extra buttons that come with some clothing over the years, but not anywhere near the amount that is in your jars. I know a gal who has made a very lucrative business making beautiful Christmas Trees out of old jewelry and buttons glued to styrofoam forms. I will send you some pictures, they are carried in the most exclusive stores and boutiques(very limited, she does it all herself but has help finding the bits and pieces). Not that you need a new hobby! Maybe I will put on a skirt today. You are so inspiring.

    1. Hey Pam! Sorry I am late seeing your comment. Dan was off work Monday and Tuesday so I hardly had time to get near the computer. I would love to see the things made from the old buttons and jewelry. I could never be that talented. I do better with easy projects. :) I'm glad you like the skirt. Thank you. I guess maybe I will wear it. It's fun putting two skirts together to make one. It's always good to hear from you.
