Around the yard

Has it really been 7 days since my last post??

The Peonies were in bloom this week but they didn't last very long.  We have had wind, thunderstorms, hard rain, high humidity, and hot sticky days, off and on this entire week.  Peonies have such long stems and large blooms, they flop over and break pretty easily.  I need to work on this flower bed.  The Obedient plants have about taken over.  I just feel overwhelmed when I look at this big job and find something else to work on!!

I like the Obedient plants but they will take over!!!  These plants bloom in late September and early October.  The blooms are hot pink and pretty!!!

As far as the vegetable garden this year...well I just don't know what to do!!!  The plants start off looking good and begin to grow.  Then they start to look sick.  Could it be the unusual weather this year??  The many cold days we had in early spring???  We have had a little frost twice this month (May)!!!  I've heard a few others in this area say their gardens are not doing good!!  These are the pitiful looking cabbage and kale plants I showed you in an earlier post...Would you just look at the bug holes in the bean plants!!!  It's just not a healthy looking garden!!!  The empty spots are where plants have died!!!  And the wattle fence...These pole beans are more holes than leaves.  How will they ever climb the fence???  Today is too windy, but if it's calm tomorrow, I plan to dust everything in the garden with food grade  Diatomaceous earth.  We will see if it helps!!

I can't believe I am posting pictures of this awful looking garden...

On a happier note...the sweetest little black hen, (the real Henny Penny that the sky almost fell on that dreadful night), posed for the camera earlier...

Then came the others...thinking there was scratch involved...

All last winter 3 Dill plants grew in pots in the little greenhouse.  These plants are still growing and are so tall, if I back up far enough to get the whole plant in the picture it looks little and insignificant....This is just the top of one of the dill plants...

"Baby goats," though I fed the chickens and didn't give them anything....

I've kept you long enough...but this is the dark, scary, grapevine covered path that goes by the chicken lot into the forest..... :)  Just kidding!!!

Thank you for looking in..

Love
Henny Penny

  1. Happy to see you back! :) Your garden doesn't look that bad. Sprinkling DE may be just what it needs. I'm in SC and our gardens aren't great either. Everything seems to be way behind in its growth. Looking forward to your posts. :)

    1. Thank you! I did get out Saturday and dusted everything in the garden. It's funny how I can't find the bugs that eat holes in the bean vines. What does that, do you know?? Yep, I think your weather is like ours most of the time. Maybe our gardens will pull through!! Thank you for looking at my blog and I appreciate your comment.

  2. That scary path makes me think of one of our favorite lines: "Don't be afraid. I'm not afraid." :) I think your gardens look great. Believe me, when you start from scratch and have NO flower beds, you miss the masses!! Your garden looks good too. I have about 6 cabbage plants, but two of them are so worm-ridden, I will likely just toss them. The others, well, the cabbage worms have found them too, so we are going to harvest early and have boiled cabbage. But hopefully not boiled worms! I love you Mama! Lynn

  3. Hey Lynn Dylan,

I know the lines you're talking about, but I think it's "Don't be frightened, I'm not frightened". I mean, after all, I listened to the audio book and then watched the movie 8 times :)... Is that right? Oh, you should look down into my cabbage plants...talk about worm-ridden!!! Worm-ridden....I like that word! I love you, Lynn.

  4. Dear Henny,
All your pictures are fun and informative. The little goats and black hen are so sweet. Have you ever made cheese from the goat milk?
That one pic is so intriguing, it seems inviting, somehow. Like it may be a good spot to bring a quilt and sandwich, paint a pic, or attempt a power snoozer. There are very few situations in life that cannot be improved by a sandwich, painting a pic, or taking a power snoozer. Don't you agree?
    Hope all is well.

    Love,
    Jen

    1. Dear Jen,

I am always glad to hear from you!! I have never milked a goat. These two are female Pigmy goats. I kind of wish now that I had gotten milk goats. I don't think you milk pigmy goats?? Do you know?? I just wanted a pet goat.:) Yes, I agree about the sandwich and power snoozer, but I would have to bring along a coloring book!!! I can not draw or paint. Do you? I can picture you being an artist...

      Love,
      Henny
