Making Aprons and other things!

Remember the aprons cut from the red and black and green and black print fabrics? The ones I mistakenly cut the trim out of navy blue instead of black. Well, I got it all straightened out and finished those two aprons.

I've been trying to sew a little at night after supper is done and the dishes are washed. But then at the edge of dark, the rooster has to be let in the goat lot, BunBun has to be put back in his cage, and the chicken house door has to be shut for the night. Thinking I am done and can sit down at the sewing machine, Poppy asks, are we going to have a bowl of ice cream tonight? Well yeah, what kind do you want?

Last night I started on another grocery bag holder, got it about half finished and thought to myself...I simply cannot sit here and sew another stitch. Not another stitch! I turned off the iron and the lights and got out of the sewing room!

This is our one Stargazer Lily that blooms in the back near the ditch. Those six bulbs I planted in the spring finally came through the ground and were beginning to grow when this volunteer vine pops up from out of nowhere and absolutely takes over.

Can you see the puny little lily standing there behind the vine? This vine grew here on its own...it was meant to be. I can't move it. The stargazer lilies hopefully will come back bigger and better than ever next year. And, I have the one pretty lily to enjoy this summer.

Look who's watching.

Our neighbor Ann said yesterday, when she stopped for a minute, this is the only place I go where a rooster comes out to meet me. And he does. Big Boy remembers that Ann brings old bread and table scraps by for the chickens, so he rushes out to meet her.

Okay, I've cooled off and rested a bit from the mowing...it is hot and humid today! Better get busy again. Thank you for stopping by.

Love,
Henny

Eli and I finished off the Turkey Hill vanilla...

  1. Absolutely love the Stargazer. You have a wonderful fabric stash and I nice craft room. I wish I had a dedicated sewing area. I too have been trying to sew at night. It is difficult as it has been so very hot here.

    1. Thank you! I do enjoy the little sewing room, especially since most of the house looks like a hunting lodge. Thanks to my husband. :)

  2. Your craft room looks a real delight with masses of fabric to rummage through. I love the aprons such a great old fashioned pattern that I adore. The temperatures have dropped quite dramatically here so we are back to rain and wind, the heat wave didn't last for long.

    1. It would be nice if the weather would cool off a little here. 97 degrees here today and very humid!

  3. I do like your aprons, the green one is eye catching, strange as I usually go for full on colours. That vine is a thuggish looking plant, will it bear fruit. I may have to indulge in some ice cream myself.

    1. The vine has turned out to be a pumpkin and there two pumpkins growing. Hope they turn orange for Halloween. I've never grown a pumpkin before.

  4. Love your aprons, love the flowers (stargazer and sunflowers) and your silly puppy, Eli.

Stay cool... Weather is much cooler today here in Michigan so the flies aren't tormenting the donkeys as much as usual. Thank goodness!

  5. Your Lily is beautiful . . . so sad that vine didn't pick a different spot to grow. Like you said your lilies will come back next year. Do they multiply like tulips, I'm assuming they do, but have never grown them. Our aprons and wonderful as well as your bonnets. I still haven't heard are your bonnets sized for adults or children? I love them :)

    1. Hey Connie! I'm beginning to think that stargazer lilies do not multiply. That one has been in the same spot for two or three years and is still just one. Wish they did multiply. These bonnets fit adults but will also fit a child's head. There is a gathered panel that keeps the bonnet from falling forward. They seem to fit good. The pattern is a copy of a very old bonnet pattern.

  6. Oh, I love the design of those aprons. They look like they'd be very practical too.

  7. What a charming peek into your sewing room, and a treat to see the aprons finished. Don't you love how our menfolk ask about something in the way of requesting that we take care of it for them? Of course, when my Dan gets into the ice cream, he uses a soup spoon from the silverware drawer, leaving the drawer partially open, and drips ice cream into it. And wonders how I know what he was up to the next morning! Big Boy is as handsome as ever, and that lily is stunning.
Nice to drop by, thank you!

    1. I'm glad you stopped by Pam. That is so funny about dropping ice cream in the silverware drawer. Men! You described it perfectly. We usually eat an apple or some fruit when Poppy gets home from work. If I am busy doing something, he will say, I guess we're not going to eat an apple today. Like there is no way he could eat one if I don't hand it to him. Big Boy is still running things around here...but he really is such a nice rooster. I still love and enjoy the painting you did of Big Boy. Thank you!

  8. I love the pic of Eli snoozing and holding the empty ice cream container. Unfortunately if I give Bracken the cardboard ice cream box when it's empty he eats it box and all! ( Labs apparently eat almost anything edible). I give him the almost empty plastic margarine container and he loves that! Takes it into his kennel and sleeps with it nearby in case he missed a bit.

    1. Labs are such special dogs. I love them. I really like the name Bracken. We have always had Labs until we lost our last one, Chip. Then Eli cam along. Eli usually chews up the ice cream carton all over the floor.

  9. I love the red and black and green and black aprons! They are very striking! Don't you just love the stargazer lilies, you can smell them before you ever see them! Eli well what can I say that I haven't :O) just love him. I have been trying hard to do better with Keepers grooming. Instead of thinking I have to brush alllll of him I am now just going for a brush each day of about 10-15 minutes...I can do a lot of good I am finding in that small amount of time! Wonder what type squash your volunteer is? It looks like squash No?

    1. That squash vine has turned out to be a pumpkin. Imagine that! I've never grown a pumpkin before. If I had planted a pumpkin seed it would not have come up...just like the Citron seeds! Speaking of brushing Keeper, that is a good idea. I am not as good at grooming Eli as you would think. He needs to be brushed now! I do love stargazer lilies!!

  10. Oh my goodness...I am so in love with those aprons! Do you sell them?

    1. Thank you! I do sell the aprons and the bonnets. I used to sell them at the farmer's market. I sell a few too at a little seed store in town.

  11. I absolutely love those aprons! I have an old one that was my mom's that's full coverage like those. I need full coverage when I cook. I am messy. If I don't wear an apron I throw a towel over my shoulder to wipe my hands on as I go so I don't leave stickiness on my cabinet doors and drawers. If I lived close enough, I'd love to attend the market when you sell your bonnets and aprons. Did you notice the butterfly in the picture of the stargazer lily? It looks like it's flying up to get some nectar. Our high temperature today set a record for the lowest high temperature ever in July. It was 60 degrees ant 9 o'clock this morning and our high was just 71 here in the St. Louis area. That's just plain wrong! July is supposed to be hot and I've worn sweatpants all day!

    1. That towel over the shoulder is a good idea. Would you believe that I never think to put on an apron! Never, and I have a drawer full. I also have grease spots on every shirt I own! :) I did notice that butterfly and should have mentioned it in my post. There was also a weird looking bug there that had eaten a hole in the flower. That 60 degrees is unbelievable. Bet it feels good! It is hot 97 and humid here today!

  12. Your aprons are very pretty! That is some big vine...but your one lily looks great! Funny about your Rooster! You are a busy lady! After supper tonight I laid down for just a bit and woke up three hours later...I must of been tired:)

    1. Thank you Far Side! You must have been tired. I really need to nap more. Poppy can take two or three hour naps. If I doze off it if for 10 to 15 minutes, and I am wide awake!

  13. It's so hot and humid here I haven't done anything crafty in months. Your aprons are so pretty, I don't know anyone who cooks though, isn't that a shame.

    1. Thank you! That is a shame! :) Wish I could say the same thing. I really hate to cook! One of these days I am going on a strike! Is that how you say it? :)

  14. Now my reply to Poppy would have been, 'yes we are, could you bring me a bowl of it please. And oh, don't forget to bring a spoon as well';-).
    Men!!
Your aprons are very nice, much nicer than my kind of boring simple ones. But, people still buy them. Can't see to get to the sewing room these days.

  15. I love your aprons. I forgot to bring mine to South Carolina but it's too hot to wear them anyway! Also too hot to cook. Your rooster is a very handsome boy.

  16. That Big Boy----he's no fool! I love the navy and green apron, that's one of my favorite color combinations. I used to have a pair of shoes that used those colors and just matched a dress of mine.
