Just in time...

The teeny tiny garden is growing and my grasshopper trap is woven and hanging on a post. :)

On our walk with Eli and Ellie I saw a patch of small leaf long stem Plantain. Just had to stop and pick a handful and bring them home.

Thinking of mama, I wove the long stems threw my fingers trying to remember just how she did it. Anyhow, this is how it turned out. I will be sure and let you know if it catches a grasshopper. :)

Baby chicks...

Not really babies any longer, these chicks have moved into the lot with the big chickens.

Cutie pie! All of them are cute, and so friendly. Poppy says, "because they think you are their mama".

but the cutest are the two black Marans with feathers on their legs.

Speaking of the garden, so far, so good? The beans are up, and I've built the crooked little wattle fence, such as it is...

While up at the garden taking pictures only five minutes ago, would you look at this!

a guy from Duke Energy spraying weed killer under the power lines. The mist was blowing my way, I could smell it!

and here's his truck...

If my plants all die! Well, what can I do?? Always something!

Better get busy. Need to get the animals all fed and settled in early since they're calling for a chance of thunderstorms this evening. Oh, I feel so bad for all the people in Iowa where so many tornadoes hit. My heart goes out to them. I can't even imaging going through that.

Hope to be back soon.

Love, Henny

Been working on the old cupboard, with springtime dishes. Be back with pictures. (hopefully)

Shoot! I meant to show you the pretty lettuce growing in the garden. I usually can't grow lettuce!

Guess I've finally gone off the deep end

About that grasshopper trap. Honestly, I think my Mother made that up herself. I searched on line for "grasshopper trap woven with Plantain" and could find nothing. Mama never sat idle. Anytime we were in the yard she was making Daisy chains or chains from the clover flowers. She could doodle better than anyone.  I'll have to show you sometime the neat doodle work she taught me. "Doodle work"! Would that be how you say it? Ahhh, remember "Doodle bug, doodle bug your house is on fire"?  Anyhow, Mama had the patience of Job.

I remember once when my sister, brother, and I were small. We were all in the car going someplace and mama gave us a stick of gum. She showed us how you could very very carefully separate the foil on the wrapper from the paper, then carefully smooth it out and gently wave it in the air to make a little crinkly sound. Now this is trivial but it entertained and fascinated me, of course, it doesn't take much. :)

Plundering around in my gardening basket a few days ago I found a twenty cent pack of Radish seeds. I figured it was too hot and too late in the season to sow them, but look. Have you ever seen a bunch as cute? :)

There was also a twenty cent pack of Cosmos in my basket so I dug a spot in the garden for them. I like those twenty cent packs of seeds that Walmart sells. Just right for my teeny tiny gardening spots.

Anytime Eli and Weetie are are awake the kitty feeder stays on the freezer in the pantry.  Glad Bickett didn't decide to back up.

I'm off to refill the hummingbird feeders and wash the kitchen window. Hope your Monday started off as fine and dandy as mine did. Gosh, knock on wood! Hope this week stays fine and dandy.

Love,
Henny

A Grasshopper Trap??

I promise, this is not going to be another post about clover,

photo from Wikipedia
however, up at the garden this morning I noticed not only more beautiful clover, but plantain too. The skinny leaf plantain that has the long stems and flowers. This plantain brought back a sweet childhood memory of sitting in the yard with mama.

Mama knew how to weave a grasshopper trap from these long stems. Seriously. I never did catch a grasshopper in one, but she said that I might one day.

I never did learn to weave a grasshopper trap as pretty as mama's but it went something like this.

Please do pardon my dirty red hands. I had just finished working in the garden when I spotted the plantain.

When my grasshopper trap was finished, I hung it just inside the garden gate.

I'm afraid mama would be mighty disappointed in my work. Her traps always turned out much neater and prettier. Anyway, if I catch a grasshopper, I will let you know. :)

This wild blueberry grows in front of Poppy's shop. It is simply covered in small blueberries.

Most years I have managed to make one blueberry cobbler from the wild berries. That is, if I am diligent in picking the tiny berries as they ripen, before the birds get them.

Okay I've managed to put together another boring post. Better go check on BunBun. He's playing in the old, but newly remodeled, dog lot.

Thank you listening. Oh, The Stargazer Lilies are coming through the ground! I am so excited!

Love,
Henny
