A bunch of full buckets

I did come home yesterday loaded down with 50 lb. bags of feed. Mama's little Toyota was sitting so low in the back I could have been pulled over on suspicion of hauling moonshine.

Look who was waiting at the door for me...

So, the buckets are full again...

Poppy said, all this for what, two or three eggs a day? Well no! The hens don't lay as much in the wintertime and besides that, it is "all this for the joy of taking care of animals." "A little farm", such as it is.

Plus there were four more strings to add to my ball of strings. I have saved every string off every feed bag since we moved into the cabin in 1989...

Have you ever given an animal a name and then just couldn't call it by that name. I think the name Smokey is cute as can be, but it doesn't roll off my tongue just right. Smokey thinks his name is "Kitty". Reckon I should change it to "kitty"? Anyway, Kitty has taken over Bickett's stool. He is a brave little thing and determined to be friends with Bickett...

Bickett says he doesn't have time for such nonsense. Playing with Poppy is for us older cats. Oops, excuse the belly. Bickett is a tad overweight, like some other folks around here...

See, if you keep your back feet firmly against the leg of the stool, you can kick off and get away. I been known to kick this stool completely over backwards...

Better get busy. I need to check on the baby guineas again before dark and suppertime if not too far away. We have not had any bad storms today, thankfully. So far, just rain. Thank you for visiting. Hope to be back soon.

Love,
Henny

  1. Full buckets...happy hearts :)
When the little stray cat showed up late summer, I named him Tom Kitten as in Beatrix Potter fame, but turned out to be a girl, and since she answered to the name Tom I felt I needed to keep it, but loved the name Tilly also.....so her name is Tom -Tilly, she answers to kitty :)
What well-fed kitties you have there !

  2. That is a pretty good start on that ball of string. Soon you will have a tourist attraction to rival that huge ball of string that is somewhere in Iowa (I think).

Our bad weather is beginning to roll in here from the northwest. Cloudy with a good bit of wind and tiny flakes of snow. A good day to stay strictly inside----glad I don't have any outdoor animals to tend to like you do. Doesn't sound good for the rest of the week either. A forecast of a low of -7 and a high of +7 (real temperatures, not wind chill) for next Wednesday. Brrrr----hope they have got that wrong!

    1. It got really warm here yesterday, in the 70's. We had rain but never did get a storm. And we have a forecast of a high of 20 on Thursday! 20 probably sounds warm to a lot of folks out there. At least the weatherman said there will be sun this week. Yay!

  3. Jo, how sweet to hear from you first as you were on my mind. What I really want to name Kitty is "kitten". All because of Tom Kitten and Oliver Cat. Those are the sweetest names ever! Would you mind if I named this kitty, "Kitten" and give all the credit to you? :) Tom-Tilly is just right too. You just have a way with things! Thank you Jo.

    1. I would be honored Henny, I love the name Tom Kitten, and if my Tom-Tilly were a boy cat, I would have still named him that, although I must admit, I do tend to use a variety of names....Tom Tom, Tom Tilly, Tilly girl, and Tom Kitten...she answers to all I think it must be my tone of voice, not necessarily the name I use ...lol
      Thank you for your sweetness.

    2. Jo, thank you. So "Kitten" it is. I love that. It's funny how we too call our animals by so many names. Bickett answers to "B", "Mr. B", "BeeBee", "Baby Bee", and "Bicky".

  4. oh yes I know that door greeter.. well our big white door greeter who looks so very much like yours LOL... today has been cold here but sun was finally out! I wound up having to do a make shift cover on my newly planted onions.. usually they are fine to plant now but we are having below normal temps for us this week.. Close to teens at night a couple nights and I don't know what that would do to freshly planted onions plants.. sooo had to come up with a quick fix.. and yes I do rest though sometimes I wonder about that myself LOL :O)... today I have rested other than just a few things I have done like cover the onions and do a dab and I do mean dab of cleaning in the house...

    1. Our big white dogs do look alike! It would be awful to lose all those onion sets to the cold...and all that hard work! I didn't do much yesterday either. Poppy was off work and relaxing most of the day. :)

  5. Let's face it, you are a hobby farmer, and hobbies can be expensive. It beats some other less healthful hobbies and habits.

  6. A "Bickett belly" could be the new term for those winter pounds we're all acquiring. Although on him it's adorable.

  7. It's the joy of the doing. There's little money in it but when you eat that egg you know how old it is.

    1. Collecting elastic bands makes more sense than collecting little pieces of string. :)

  10. Ha! That's quite the ball of string you have there. Better not let Smokey aka Kitty get ahold of it. When we adopted Lily her name was Sara. She had been called that for seven years so I kept it for awhile but it just didn't sound right to me. Plus, we had Sierra so it could get a little confusing. I changed her name by calling her Sara-Lily for awhile and then dropped the Sara. She always came running when I called her. :) Annie says to Bickett..."jelly bellies rock.".

    1. I'll have to rub Bickett's fat belly and tell him what Annie said. Your Lily looks more like a Lily than a Sara. After a little conversation with Jo from "A Brit in Tennessee", I am thinking Smokey will now be called "Kitten". I've wanted to call him "Kitten", after Jo's "Tom Kitten", since he wandered up. :).

  11. Seth had a cat name Kitty when he was little. I love that you have a ball of string. That is a neat idea.

    Love you

    1. A cat named Kitty! I think that's cute, don't you? You named Smokey, that's the only reason I hate to change it. I love you Vicki.

  12. Your eggs are worth it! Glad you are stocked up again for awhile! I have seen those balls of string in antique shops:)

    1. I had no idea a ball of string would ever be in an antique shop. I do know old folks used to save every little piece of string. Maybe I'll be remembered for my string one day. :)

  13. Dear Henny, Long time away but just stopped by to say Happy New Year and I will be back when I get a settled job whenever that is! I got to say my favorite picture is of your visiting pig. He is too cute. Also I loved the older New Years pictures of Pappy and yourself going out to do the town! You are so lovely inside and out and I have yet to get myself down there to meet you, Give Lynn my best wishes and I wish you happiness and love and good health for our upcoming year. Warm wishes - Terry in Asheville

    1. Terry, thank you for stopping by. I think of often and wonder how everything is going. Sure hope you get that perfect job and get settled in and have a very Happy New Year. Hope you can get down our way soon. I will tell Lynn. Oh, that day with the pig was something! He hasn't been visiting lately. I'm wondering it his owner put him in a pen. It's so good to hear from you Terry. Love, Henny

  15. I love to rub those soft white bellies (my Rosie cat has one, too, and offers it up often). And she is my greeter. She sits in the front window and watches the car come in the drive, then swivels around to face the door when I come in. Nothing like the exuberance of a dog, but I do love a welcome! Hopefully those full feed buckets will last you awhile.

    1. Rosie sounds sweet. Bickett is not the friendliest cat around. I found him in the middle of a highway when he was a tiny kitten in 2005. The Vet thinks that may have had something to do with his strange personality. I would love a "kitty cat" greeter as much as a "doggy" greeter. :)

    1. I would, but not too many. Our hens are getting old. Once they are gone I want only 4 or 5 hens and maybe a rooster. I love to hear a rooster crow early in the morning. :)

  17. We try to be very careful with that string. If it is the same stuff as on our feedbags, it is really strong, impossible to break by hand. Once or twice we've had a stray string get caught up around a hen's leg:( Our feed bags are stored next to the coops in barrels.

    1. This string is strong. So I guess it's good that I add all the pieces to the ball. I'm careful with string around cats and dogs too. With so many chickens, you probably have to use barrels. The buckets take up a lot of space in my laundry room.

  18. What a lovely post Henny, I have to say that Bickett needs to go on a diet !
I agree with you, it's not 'all about egg production' - when I had my smallholding I used to get my 'girls' from an ex-battery 'establishment' !!
it was so rewarding seeing them come back from the dead as it were, they loved scratching around, and enjoying the sunshine on their backs. In return, they rewarded me with more eggs than I could cope with !
