Complaining again!

It is so darn cold tonight! The wind is blowing and the ground is covered in sleet, snow, and ice! Poppy came home from work and said this is a good night for chili, so we had chili for supper. This kind of weather ruins any progress I may have made on my healthy eating! While the chili was simmering, I plundered through the cabinets looking for the ingredients to make something rich and chocolaty. I found everything needed to make the old standby, chocolate oatmeal cookies. After dropping about half the mix onto the wax paper to set, I added a scoop of coconut to the other half. If I am going off my diet, I might as well throw in all the extra fat and sugar I can. It has always been all or nothing for me! Mama used to say, "go ahead, it will be a squall tomorrow"! (meaning we would be crying about being fat).

The cookies were really good with the coconut! All that's left...

Didn't finish this post last night. We woke up to 14 degrees and about an inch of sleet, snow, and ice this morning. Out early with the animals and look who was smiling at me...

Why do goats look up and curl their upper lips, like they smell something?  It is the funniest thing how they show their front teeth.

The hens are laying good, even in this cold snowy weather...

These might be pretty in an Easter basket. Do you all dye eggs at Easter? I do, even if it is just Poppy and me here. It's fun, and fun to eat the colored eggs.

Growing up, I loved Easter. Getting the new Easter outfit was the best part! Pink, pale blue, or light yellow ruffled dresses and a full lacy ruffled petticoat underneath. New white shoes and socks. I also remember my little hat and white gloves. Aunt Berlie and I went to Sunday School one Sunday morning and I wore the hat...got lots of attention. :) For the life of me, I cannot remember the child star who make those girl's hats famous. Mama used to call the hat by her name. Does anyone have any idea who this was? It was a small dressy hat with a turned up brim and a ribbon that hung down in back.

Better get busy. I'm just plain tired of this weather now! I want to go outside! Who wants to dust or vacuum?? :)

Love,
Henny Penny

  1. Was the child star Margaret O'Brien? She was before your time, but her movies live on and she was active in the movie business for many years. I understand about it being a day for chili. I've made regular chili and white chicken chili recently. Our cold weather in the midwest isn't as bad as much of the country, but enough is enough! We've still got ice and snow on the ground from a weekend storm. We finally did get some sunshine which is melting some of it off the blacktop, but concrete is still covered. Be careful out there. A friend went to check on her animals and did a face plant on the ice.

    1. Hey Peg! No, it wasn't Margaret O'Brien. This has been on my mind all day and it finally came to me! Whew! It was a "Gigi Perreau" hat. Thank you for trying to help me remember! Now maybe I can sleep tonight! :) We love the white chicken chili too. Our steps were icy this morning. I do worry about falling, especially out here alone after Poppy leaves for work!

  2. Seems like everywhere is having an ugly winter this year. Your goat is doing this:) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flehmen_response.
Those are some pretty eggs, we just have different shades of brown:) Oh the odd 'white' one as well, even though they are supposed to lay brown eggs. I think something goes wrong on the production line somewhere when that happens:)

    1. I just read about the Flehmen Response on wikipedia. Thank you for the link. Sounds like most animals do that. Glad I learned something tonight. I really like the dark brown eggs. A friend gave us six hens that lay the blue/green eggs, but as it turns out, two of them lay white eggs. Funny, you never know.

  3. What pretty eggs! You won't need any dye--they're so colorful already. I think the whole world is fed up with the weather. I know I am!

  6. From the multi colored eggs, I guess you would have a variety of chickens. Nothing like fresh eggs off the farm.

  7. Smiling goats, and beautiful eggs". Those are good images to contrast with your freezing weather and slippery surfaces. Can I print your photo of the eggs? It is natural, lovely, and graphically artistic all at the same time! You and the new camera are great partners.
