Alaska!

Like we haven't talked enough about snow and cold lately...let me do a post on Alaska!

Poppy and I are not world travelers by any stretch of the imagination!  However, we did travel to Anchorage, Alaska in 1998. A trip of a lifetime and one we will never ever forget...

Madison, my Granddaughter, Andee and Todd's only child, was only two weeks old. Andee called and said, "Mama, pleeeease come and spend a week with me. I want to see you, and I want you to see the baby...will you please? If I buy you a ticket, will you fly to Alaska?" It touched my heart...even knowing how deathly afraid I am of flying...how could I say no. I would manage somehow.  All I knew was, I had to go!

I began panning my trip. I took eleven days off work. The next thing I did was call my doctor and explain my situation...my fear of flying and my plans to fly from North Carolina all the way to Alaska. "Will you prescribe me two nerve pills? One for the flight there and one for the flight home?" I promise to take only one of the pills, if the plane crashes on the way to Alaska!" :) As it turned out, the plane did not crash and I still took only one pill...half a pill going and half a pill coming home.

Poppy decided I was not going to Alaska without him, so he joined me.

In Alaska!! Todd and Andee...

Our new Granddaughter...

Andee and baby Madison...

Todd and baby Madison...

Andee and I mostly stayed close to home with the baby.  Poppy enjoyed every minute out with Todd, making memories he will never forget like flying over the Glaciers in a small plane, and catching a fifty pound Halibut from a boat off the Kenai Peninsula.

Together, we did lots of sightseeing, eating out, talking and laughing. We even ate a reindeer hot dog from a stand in downtown Anchorage!

We loved every minute there with Todd, Andee, and Madison.

Todd and his Jeep...

We got home safely, went back to work, and got back into the daily routine of life. We had eleven rolls of film to get developed. I carried all eleven stacks of pictures with me when I returned to work. I mean this trip was a major event! I expected everyone at work to know how special this was and to line up to see these pictures. I began to feel like my co-workers were avoiding me...maybe I had overdone it with the pictures??? I carried the pictures home, and hushed about Alaska!!!

Our little Madison will turn sixteen in April! Hard to believe!

So, I hope you've managed to stay this long. I've come back down to earth since that long ago vacation to Alaska. I also knew better than to show you all eleven stacks of pictures! :)

Love,
Henny Penny

  1. Oh I would love to see all 11 stacks of pictures. I would love to have a vacation in Alaska also. I am so happy that you and Poppy got a chance to spend time with your new granddaughter and your baby girl. You know a girl always needs their mama right after having a baby. Did not mean to leave at Todd.

    Love you!

    1. It does seem like yesterday! How neat that we both have a Madison, and both will turn 16 in April. Our Madison will turn 16 on April 10. She gets her driver's license too. I'm sure I will worry. I can't think about her out alone driving!

  3. There are some things that are major life events. We must remember them and talk about them.

  4. Well, of course you had to go! And I can tell you still remember every fun bit of it!
We took an Alaskan cruise in 2003 out of Vancouver BC up to Anchorage with our daughter, son-in-law and our only grandchild at the time, Isaac, who was just a year and a half old. We had so much fun with him and sightseeing and all of the luxury on the floating hotel. A big thrill for Tom and me was taking a helicopter flight up into the mountains and landing on a glacier. It was amazing! I had a digital camera by then, so I just have tons of photos on external drive storage. But I'm pretty sure I printed up enough to fill an album, which I do believe I shared at work. :-)

    1. Oh, I can't imagine a cruise to Alaska. That had to have been fun, and beautiful! I don't believe I could fly in a helicopter and land on a glacier...not even with a nerve pill! Dan admitted to me that he was afraid in that cub plane and that the impression of his hand is probably still in the metal bar he was holding on to! Glad you carried your pictures to work too! :)

  12. I've never been to Alaska and will probably never get there. The person I've traveled through life with for the last 45 years is unenthusiastic about also traveling there. So I especially enjoyed your pictures. Thanks for sharing your memories.

  13. I've never been to Alaska, but I did enjoy what photos you showed. How about making the rest of them into a slideshow, I would look at it:) Sounds like you had a wonderful trip, and little Madison has grown up to be a beautiful young lady!
