A Donkey

Anytime I mention something I want, I mean want really really badly...Poppy says, "you are always wanting something"!  Maybe so, but the "somethings" I want are usually small and inexpensive.   Never would I ask for a new car, diamond jewelry, a boat!  These things do not appeal to me.  If you want to make me happy; bring me a kitten, a puppy, a poor dog needing a home.  A baby bird that has fallen from it's nest.  A bunch of wild flowers picked from the side of the road.  An old graniteware kettle or 50 feet of rope to build a swing!!

I don't ask to go on vacations and stay in fancy hotels.  If you want to take me somewhere special; drive me to the mountains to see the colored leaves in the fall.  Stop at all those little stores, the ones built on the sides of the mountain roads that have jugs of apple cider, jars of honey, and bushels of apples for sale...maybe some handmade quilts hanging outside, and inside, the smell of a wood stove burning.

This time, however, I want something really special!!  Something that could cost upwards of 300.00...maybe even 500.00!  What I want is a miniature donkey. :)  That's right!  Even a, "not so miniature" donkey would be great.  A donkey that I can hug and feed and lead around the yard.

From what I read, it is best to get a jenny, or female.  These are more expensive and harder to find.  There are some males for sale at places like Craig's List...I feel sorry for the males.  What is wrong with having a male donkey for a pet.  I simply want a sweet donkey!  Poppy says "IF" we get one it has to be miniature and female!!  We had this big discussion last year but never got the donkey.  Over time, the idea faded some...but it's back, big time, and I want a donkey!!!

Okay, as the "Food Lion" Lion says on TV, "that's just my two cents!!!  Hope Poppy comes home in a good mood today, cause I'm going to do some talking!!

Love,
Henny Penny

  1. My father-in-law just bought a Jenny donkey. She is not a miniature but she is not that big. I want a dog really bad.

    1. Oh, is she sweet? Is she tame? I would love a regular size donkey too. If you hear of anybody up that way with donkeys for sale, will you let me know? I hope you get a dog. Love you, Henny

  2. Dear Henny, I have to tell you I love a male Sicilian donkey that my friend Pam has! He is a rascal, I mean it! He is about 32 years old and put in their pasture originally to keep coyotes out, as they are rampant here in parts of WNC. He rules that place and her! I love him, he is a just as smart as a person. I was nailing a piece of fencing to repair a tear in her fence (she is 88, needs my help) and when I looked to find the hammer, it was gone. Moses had took off with the hammer and was walking around the pasture with the hammer in his mouth. He thought that was great fun! I think there is nothing sweeter than when he sees Pam, he starts braying, I believe you could hear him a couple miles away and he runs all over the place and then runs up to her about 2 inches away and just stands. I don't blame you for wanting one, I would sure like to have one, but the full size ones are nice, too. I think the little ones are nice, but Moses the donkey has the cross on his back and all the school kids come to see him "cause he is the donkey that carried Jesus." I love all your posts, but this one touches my heart because I love all those things too...take care, XOXO Terry

  3. Henny, there is a man named Mark Morris in SC that is having to give up his donkeys because of illness; his number to call is 803/842-2848; I don't know if they are miniature donkeys, but I believe they are because they were on a miniature rescue site. He posted on 8 October that he needs to find homes for his donkeys because of illness, so I don't know if you want to call, but they might be free, just transport to your home. Just FYI - Terry

  4. Dear Terry,

I love that story about Moses the donkey. 32 years old! And what a perfect name! I have heard something about the donkeys that have a cross on their back. I want look that up and read about it. Thank you so much for telling me about the man in SC. I am going to call. I'm afraid to get excited!! I didn't mention "donkey" to Poppy last night! :) I wish you could have a donkey too! I will let you know what I find out.

    Love,
    Henny

    1. Hey Terry! Hope you look in again and see this. I called that number and spoke to Mr. Morris. He has found homes for all the donkeys except one male, and his wife's niece plans to take him, Mr. Morris said if she decides not to take the last donkey, he will call me. He was very nice and we talked for a while about animals. Thank you for your help. Do you know where in SC they live? Love, Henny

  5. Dearest Henny, that number is around Hampton SC - I am not familiar with that but I would say from the eastern NC border to probably beach area, because we are near the 864 area code. I am sorry they are gone, but I got his name off of a donkey rescue site. There is probably a donkey rescue nearer to you, but I will keep an ear out here. I know that Moses will need a home, but he is very old and I am hoping I can convince the folks that inherit her farm to keep him there. Besides, he is a bully and thinks he is a person. I had a piece of fruit for him the other day in one hand and a cookie in the other for the baby goat. I offered the fruit to him and he looked at it, and snatched the cookie out of my hand and took off..hee hee! I will keep looking out for you. The little ones like eeyore are adorable, but I have only ever seen one and that was in TN. ... XO Terry

  6. Henny, 1 more comment re your donkey search...2 places somewhat near you... that sell them for reasonable and they say they have mini-jennies. Itty Bitty Farm 704-576-9367 Blacksburg SC and Neigh Bray Farm 803-238-0176 at Swansea SC, about 16 miles S of Columbia, a little far, but they say that they always have jennies! Good luck! Terry
