Six new chickens

Talk about being overwhelmed!!!   Every time I look out the window I see eight big trees laying in every direction across the back yard!!!  And, when the trees hit the ground, pine cones, leaves, and limbs splattered from one end of the property to the other!!!   Add to that mess, two storms with wind and heavy rain.  I've been trying to catch up with the work, inside and out, today!!!  As mama would say, "I am simply worn out"!!! :)

Some friends of ours brought us six of the cutest chickens!!!  Araucanas, the chickens that lay colored eggs.   These chicks are about half grown and beginning to get the little tufts of feathers on each side of their face...

It's hard to get a good picture of a chicken, for me, anyway!!!  None of these show how cute these chicks really are.  No two chicks are alike.

Finally!!!  Jewel's chicks have learned to go in the chicken house at dusk and fly up on the roost with the other chickens.  Now I have six new chicks to teach how to do this!!  Last night I put the new ones in a cage inside the chicken house for the night...so they could see how it's done.   Bedtime tonight should be total chaos as the old hens don't like to share the roost with new chickens.  Old hens can be downright mean!  I may have to take my fly swatter with me!!! :)  Something to do with the "pecking order"!!!

The prettiest things in the garden this year are the sunflowers...And these volunteered and came up!!

This Cardinal stopped in just as I walked up to take a picture...

Thank you for looking in.   Hope to be back soon with  something new!!!

Love,
Henny Penny

  1. You take great photos of the chickens. They are really cute. :) I have dealt the downed pine trees too and they are such a mess. I still have a couple left in my back lot and I'm out there 2-3 times a week picking up pine cones and broken branches. I'm not a big fan of pine trees. Only good thing I can find about them, are the pine needles I can rake up and use around my other plants. Anyhoo, love your blog and check it every day. Take care!

    1. Thank you!! I appreciate that you look at my blog. We've wished many times that we had cut all the pines. You're right about using the pine straw. It makes good paths too.

  2. Good Sunday morning, Henny! Your chickens are so cute...you will have to post pictures of their eggs. When I was a teen in the early 1970s, we had about 40 chickens, maybe 2 or 3 were roosters, and they would just go in their little house at night so easy and come out and stay in their little boundary during the day. I moved out after high school and my folks did not care for them like I did, and eventually, they all died or were given away. But, I did have to go down and herd them in near sunset. We had hawks, of course. I miss those days so much, but happily for me, you have chicken stories to share! I am really sorry about your garden full of squash bugs and stuff. Hopefully, they will survive, but if rains too much, ? it has held off here some lately and the folks that have gardens seem happier. I gave up the garden idea this year as it was just too rainy. I only have a tiny spot, so we will see in the fall. You will have post "how to" articles on raising chickens. I hope you get your dogs when you are ready, going back a little. A friend of mine found 2 abandon cockers on the parkway and I was all ready to go take pictures and post them with a dog rescue to look for homes when she called and said, "They have a home! With me! " She is going to keep them, and I am so glad! They were about 10 years old and they need to stay together. Blessings in all forms lately! Love Ya! Terry

    1. Hey Terry! Good "Tuesday" morning!! Where do the days go??? I enjoyed your comment so much. Thank you! I will post pictures of the eggs. I'm sorry to hear about your chickens. I left home right after high school too...and left behind a baby possum, of all things. I had signed up to join the Air Force and when everything was completed HAD to leave. I never knew what happened to my possum...most people wouldn't want a possum!!! I am so glad your friend kept the dogs. I can't imagine anyone being able to abandon a pet after having it that long. I was surprised to find the garden looking pretty good this morning, so I have a couple of pictures to post...still nothing to brag about. Hope you have a really good day!!

      Love

  3. I do love sunflowers ... and birds. We have a new bunch of baby crows every year and we got to watch them figure out flying this year. As to sunflowers... one of my favorite pictures of flowers I ever took is of one (it is at my link should you want to see it)!

    You have a lovely farm/home!

    1. Thank you for the nice comment! Oh! I looked at your sunflower picture...it is really beautiful!! I've never seen one like it, with the green center. I would love to have a baby crow to raise. We see and hear crows in the distance. I like your Etsy shop and will be back. Thanks again.
