My goodness! Fall has started off as busy as last spring did.
I finally made my way into the teeny tiny garden, with the help of a machete, and have cleaned up everthing except the zinnias and marigolds. I'll get a picture tomorrow.
Oh, tomorrow tomorrow! Today is the tomorrow I was talking about but there has been no time for going to the garden. But...
we did take a little trip to Franklinton to pick up the new hens. My plan was to buy three but when we got there Poppy said let's get five.
my plan also was to buy the red hens that lay good and lay the dark brown eggs. Then I fell in love with these beautiful large black hens, but these sell for twenty five dollars each.
Guess what! The man said, "I'm going to let you have one of the black hens for the same price as the red hens". And so he did!
We have been so fortunate in meeting the nicest folks through Craigslist. The man also asked if we like pears. His trees were loaded in big delicious pears. He sent us home with an armload.
I do love the month of October. The acorns are falling and so are the hickory nuts and I love picking them up. I've picked a few wild scuppernong grapes and also picked up a few wild persimmons from off the ground.
and most of all, October makes me want to bring out the rich fall colors...
But the dirt and dust of summer had to be cleaned off the old cupboard and front porch before putting out anything that might draw a little attention...
So I fixed another bucket of hot soapy water and went to work scrubbing the teeny tiny front porch. Wish the glare wasn't so bad on the sunflower poster. :(
I had gathered a big handful of goldenrods when we walked Eli and Weetie. The goldenrods are like the big healthy weeds that have taken over the hundred acres; extra large and extra beautiful and growing thick along the dirt path.
The gold color doesn't show well in the picture. Anyhow, that's it for my little bit of fall decorating. :.
Oh Henny, your front porch looks so pretty and Fall like! I just love it, well I love your whole house and property. How exciting to get the new hens! I bet you will be rolling in eggs before long and I imagine you will be naming those hens. At least I know I would be tempted to name them as they usually show so much personality and are fun to watch. The seasons changing are always a busy time of the year especially on a farm but you always keep everything looking so good. You and Poppy take good care of yourselves and stay well! xxx
ReplyDeleteI was so glad to see your post this evening. Your decorating is so pretty. I want to sit on your porch with you and have a cup of tea and catch up on life. It looks so cozy and comfortable.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful new chickens too. I think most people are like the man you met. We just see the worst on the news and in social media. I have met some of my favorite people through blogs and even Craigslist!
Wishing you a wonderful week. We have about three more days of gorgeous fall weather before it changes to rain and cold. The weatherman said this was our last warm days of fall but I sure hope he's wrong! It was 82 today!
Blessings,
Betsy

Oh, don't you just love thrift stores?!! They have such treasures. Happy Fall~ Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteI'm still here! I'm still here! I'm still here! :).
ReplyDeleteThe chickens look lovely Henny, something about
chickens that look so friendly about them..! And..
They can become quite tame..even doing silly tricks..!
And..! They produce one of the nicest foods ever..Eggs!
Perhaps the black ones will produce chocolate eggs..! :o).
Haha! If you wanna know about weeds..ask Willie..I grow
lots of them, plants like dandelion are ideal for salads,
the leaves give a bitter sweet taste, loads of weeds out
there worth using..!
And, yes, the one drawback are the seeds they produce,
but then, all plants produce loads of seeds..!
Yes! The fall/Autumn is a lovely time of year, but l get
a little sad, as the leaves on my Virginia Creeper start
to turn, and the baskets are on their last legs, few flowers
still hanging in there though..be all gone in a few weeks..! :(.
Another lemon tea called for..Home to~day, few things need my
attention..including a little sewing..but, l won't bore you with
that..
Look after those 'chucks' Henny..(do you call them that over there)..
It's a common name for chicken over here..a a type of dialect..! :).
AND..look after those weeds..HeHe! Bless!x

The front porch looks amazing, so pretty. Love the table cover, and the Autumnal decor.
ReplyDeleteyou could look up what all the different 'weeds' are & see if any are useful (actually all are useful) 'weeds' come up first to give the next lot of plants protection, have you ever seen a documentary on how a forest starts off? ALL weeds first, they die down once they lose all their sun to allow the next generation of growth to grow, it keeps going with more of the exotic plants & trees coming on, fascinating!
ReplyDeletei think some weeds have some beautiful flowers too.
enjoy your new chooks (chickens) i share my excess eggs with my neighbour/s who help out with their scraps.
love your cozy little porch!
thanx for sharing
Hi Henny- That is great that you have your new Hens- good idea of Poppy's to get five and the Farmer was generous. On my Uncle's farm back in the 1960s at Nowra we (Kids) would go hunting for Eggs - we found them everywhere from the Free-Range Hens...such great memories of being on the Farm. Have a great time there in Northern Carolina. Regards. KEV.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely, inviting porch! I would love to have that black hen! Are any of them laying yet? -Jenn
ReplyDeleteVery nice to see your October decorating, your new chickens, and fun to read of your adventure buying them and the pears and meeting such a nice person! Let's hope your treeless field gets some nice wildflowers in the future and it becomes a joy! Andrea
ReplyDeleteHenny, in the 1st pic what is the pink flower?
ReplyDeleteInteresting that you say fall is just beginning. Here fall is just about over. I have most fall yardwork done.
ReplyDeleteLove the look of the autumn porch, Henny. Very festive. And new chickens! Good looking brood,
ReplyDeleteI'd say. I love goldenrod, except it spells cold weather soon.
Oh I love your front porch. It looks so homey and welcoming!
ReplyDeleteGood to see this post from you again. I love your porch, and you've got some good looking chickens. It is hard to believe fall is here when it is very hot and humid down here in s.e. FL. Hopefully we'll have some cooler weather soon. Thanks for sharing bits of your life. ~ FlowerLaady
ReplyDeleteStopping by to say Hi. Your porch is so welcoming and the fall colors look good with the wood cabinet.
ReplyDeleteHi Henny, I love your porch. I would love to sit and visit with you looking out at your lovely yard.
ReplyDeleteDid you name the new chickens?
And you are right, there are good people out and about. We too have met some nice folks doing Craiglist deals.
Your porch is so cute. I can just imagine how peaceful it might be to sit out there.
ReplyDeleteLove your porch. Congratulations on the new girls so cute. I have 7 and I love them so much. Your place looks gorgeous all ready for fall. Very cozy.
ReplyDeleteLovely photos!!
ReplyDeleteI love the way you have decorated your porch for autumn, so pretty and welcoming :)
ReplyDeleteIsn't autumn beautiful? I too love the rich colours.
ReplyDeleteAnd. . . I wonder if Blogger is listening to how many folks aren't happy with the "update."
Everything looks beautiful around your place. I like the new chickens too!
ReplyDeleteI'm not happy with what the new blogger does either. I don't know why they have to fix things that aren't broke!
Your porch looks so inviting & pretty dear Henny Penny. We are heading into spring here & I need to scrub my deck/porch area as its rather dirty & dusty from winter time. Hope you have a lovely week my friend. I don't like the new blogger either & it seems to change all my print sizes & where my photos are ... has a mind of its own. xx
ReplyDeleteI love your new Hens....they look great. Love all your decorations too, except the scary pumpkin.....I usually put cute smiley pumpkins instead of scary ones....but somebody at your house must like the scary side of Halloween. Not me. Love your blog though and all your weed pics and new tablecloth and sunflower poster. Things are looking good at your place, Henny. We've got all our fall decor up too! October is probably going to fly by. Take good care!
ReplyDeleteYour porch looks pretty all decorated for Fall. The tablecloth was a great thrift store find.
ReplyDeleteThe new hens look good especially that black one (Shhhh, don't tell the red ones I said that).
It's always fun to read about what you've been up to.
ReplyDeleteHi, HP! I just love your cozy, pretty porch. Would love to just sit there and look at the yard and relax! It looks so clean. Your new hens are SO pretty - I agree about that black one. She's gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteHi Henny :) Your porch is so inviting and warm, I love it!! Oh the hens, they really are so pretty, nice guy to give you a good price! :)
ReplyDeleteI like your fall decorations in the old cupboard. Mine have made it as far as the kitchen table but I need to buy some pumpkins before i can go further. The new laying hens have no idea what a wonderful new home they have come to! I hope they are settling in and you will soon be getting five eggs a day.
ReplyDeleteGood that someone could help you out identifing your huge weed! Your porch looks lovely! Yeah for nice hens !! :)
ReplyDeleteThat first picture of the pink flowered "weed" is just beautiful. Wouldn't it be nice if the flowers we like would grow as big and strong as weeds with little effort from the gardener? Maybe not. Possibly it's the process as much as the product that keeps gardeners happy.
ReplyDeleteI love the goldenrod bouquet it looks just right gracing your entry.
Goldenrod is my favorite! Phil/MN
ReplyDeleteYour porch looks like it could be in a movie. Just how I imagine American porches. Love the chickens too.
ReplyDeleteTerry is a country guy and had chickens and pigs when he was a kid. I was born in Chicago so you might guess I'm not into farm animals. BUT we moved to this mountain and my granddaughter in law has chickens. I really LOVE what my grandson calls Arrowheads. Do you know them? I'm going to put a picture of them on my next blog post. We have a large variety of chickens. Our temperatures here are cooling a LITTLE but it is downright cold at night. I never heard of a desert mountain but here we are, living in the high desert as they call it.

Hi Henny...I finally sat down at the computer and went right to see what you have been up to. Love all your fall decorating. It's such a beautiful time of year, isn't it. I love all the colours on your fall porch. We are just doing our porch now on the new house. It was going to be the last thing and it feels good to be at this stage now. Oh yes, we have to do a deck, too. Gosh, it never ends. Anyway, CHICKENS!!!!!! Lucky lady. They are beautiful and well worth the money. Glad you got a deal, though. I hope they lay well for you. If only they knew how lucky they are to live on Henny Penny Lane. Sending a hug to everyone and a special squeeze for Smokey. xo
ReplyDeleteYour porch looks so inviting. I would love to share a meal with you out on that porch. Perfection!
ReplyDeleteGod bless you,
Connie :)
I love those flowers by the pond...I don't remember ever seeing them.
ReplyDeleteI just used plant snap to take a photo of that plant, and it comes back Threadleaf Foxglove. So looked up images on google and some of them seemed to match. Hard to tell for sure about the flowers, but you can look and maybe tell more.
ReplyDeleteYour Fall decorating is lovely. Your porch looks comfy and homey. I would imagine it is a beautiful spot to sit awhile and drink in the ambience of your little world.
ReplyDeleteNew hens - how exciting!
ReplyDeleteWhere oh where is the post about you in a model T???
ReplyDeleteOoh what a find, that tablecloth is so pretty. Your front porch is lovely and welcoming. New yard birds, they are pretty, I favor those dark brown eggs. beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI adore your fall decorations. Your porch looks like a spot I would love to sit a spell and visit with you. Your hens are certain to keep you in lots of eggs this winter. Always such fun to stop by and read what you have been doing. Take care and have a blessed day. Hugs!
